Eric Whitacre introduces Sainte-Chapelle - The Tallis Scholars

Sainte-Chapelle was written by Eric Whitacre to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of The Tallis Scholars and first performed in St Paul's Cathedral, London, on March 7th. The sound recording was made in Merton College Chapel, Oxford.

Hearing how Eric describes the writing, manifestation, creation of the piece is absolutely awe-inspiring. It adds a completely new sub-level of intensity and meaning to the piece that could go missing if you haven't heard him talk about it. You can feel the emotion of a story through the chord progressions and dynamics...but hearing him describe it... Pure genius.

A beautiful piece, I heard it performed live in Hamburg last week. Btw it's cute how Eric pronounces it "Songtus Songtus" in 2:32 ... ^_^

Just saw the Tallis Scholars with this piece in Amsterdam and it was great. Fits absolutely between the Byrd and Tallis. Great concert it was! Try to get there when they are in town.

I just saw this performed this afternoon for my first time and it was splendid. It moved me to tears which is not an easy feat seeing I just emptied my tear glands not five minutes earlier with Miserere! In listening to it again from iTunes I put my finger on the harmonic motif. Definitely it ties up with Barbers Adagio for strings. Absolutely brilliant. Fantastic work Eric.
