Flosstube 26: Disney, embroidery & a project bag giveaway

I just dyed a bunch of Aida this week. It was super easy and mess free. I just rinsed the fabric, wadded it up in a clean pickle jar (if you have a bigger piece of fabric you just need to use a bigger jar) and added really hot water from the sink with a little bit of liquid RIT dye mixed in - I just used an old tupperware type container and an old measuring spoon for mixing. The Jar, container and spoon are all the equipment I needed! Left that to sit for an hour. Then rinsed the fabric in warm water, rewadded it and put it back in the jar and repeated the process with another color of dye. After an hour (actually only 15 minutes when I used a dark dye) I rinsed it again, let it drip dry for a while until it was not sopping wet any more and then Ironed it dry. I have a white towel as an ironing pad and no color came off so I think it is pretty colorfast. I posted pictures on my instagram - KarlawthaK. It came out really pretty. I used Tangerine then Wine the first time, then I did Teal and split the fabric for the second dying - half Denim Blue and half Wine and last night I did some more with Lemon Yellow and then Teal. It seriously could not have been easier.

I'm a lazy dyer when it comes to fabric. You will want a small bowl that you can fit your fabric into all scrunched up. I typically boil some water, then transfer to a heat safe cup where I add some dye (RIT) with salt. I take some paper towel and dip the edge into the dye to get a guesstimate on the shade. Then I wet my fabric and scrunch up into the small bowl. Slowly pour the dye over the fabric and then let it sit for a while. Not all of the fabric needs to be under the dye bath. After however long you want, you can remove and either dunk again or you can just start rinsing til water runs clear. Then dry. That's mostly it. Nothing tooo crazy.

I forgot about telling you about your designs. For another idea in fall season. A great hayride. Our treat from my Uncle every fall was the bonfire and a great hayride pulled by the tractor.

You could pickle the green tomatoes with peppers. My mom used to do that with all her green tomatoes and peppers at the end of the season. As far as the dresses, my mom used to take just regular T-shirt and sew material at the bottom, kinda like a drop waist dress! Then you can add rick rack or accents to fancy up the shirt! Just a thought!

Rug hookers dye and over dye a lot of their wool. There are sometimes good recipes and how to dye in rug hooking books. Try your local library. I mostly dye in Mason jars and always get good results with colors. The cats doing crafts fabric you bought is so adorable. You could embroider the Christmas patterns onto the same size blocks of fabric and make into a Christmas quilt. I do that a lot with embroidery or I make tea towels (that I don't use) only display. :) I like your Winter Wonderland bag. I love the plaid fabric.

Hello Erica...you are one busy lady and mom...congratulations on the charity donation...I do like the plaid Winter Wonder Land bag and your Kitty bad is delightful...the PS cross stitch patterns really need a lot of red and green floss...I look forward to seeing how you personalize the Christmas Village pattern...In dyeing, the mottling can be achieved with stuffing the fabric in a quart jar...with tea and coffee or the dye ....the dye is cheaper in the laundry section...but all dyed fabric has to be heat set to lock in the dye...best wishes🧡🎃🔆

All of your bags are adorable - can't decide. I like all the Christmas ones especially winter wonderland. I grew up a half hour from Disneyland so we went often - I love Minnie. My Mom would drop us kids off and come back and get us at the end of the day. You couldn't do that today for sure. Enjoy you and your videos - you are too cute. Hugs

Christmas puppy and truck! Because I really love blenders, I find that the inside of the bags are my favorite! But all of your bags are great. I do love your Halloween stitch patterns, but I just don’t decorate for fall or Halloween. I love hearing about your kids. And I am glad they are not perfect angels 👼, because that would probably be a bit of a fib on your part! Love them at this age ... my babies now have their own babies! Oh yah... I watched a video called "Hand Dyeing Cross Stitch Fabric" by StitchingWithBrenda and I thought it was a pretty simple technique. I tried it once so far and was very happy with the results. I did a solid color first and then did the spooning method on top of it for the mottling. Just remembered you were looking for suggestions on that.

Hi Erica, why don’t you just copy the embroidery prints and reduce on the copier. I would try at 75% First and if that’s still to big try 50%. That should work! Then you could make small ornaments and such. Love your channel! xo tina. PS- love the winter wonderland!

I like the Christmas Cow and Vintage Halloween bags! They all look great though. Have you thought about using the embroidery patterns in a quilt? You could do a few of them and see them together with a dashing and border. Or put them together into a bit of a scene. Or do them in a row for a table runner. That would be nice. I have never done embroidery but would love to try. Would you maybe do a stitch with me to show how you do it and some basic stitches? A babysitter would be a great idea. And they could just come over while you are home so you know what is going on and how the kids respond to them. And it gives you a break. I know I would have done that if I could have afforded it. With regards to your garden, have you looked into a community garden plot? Don’t know if it is an option but here there are areas where you can pay a small amount to use an area that can be planted. It would free up your yard for fun stuff and give more space for other things to be a bit more spread out and more planted.

I haven't finished watching your video yet, but I had to comment on an idea for the embroidery pieces. Use them for quilt squares! 😊 Ok, finished the video and visited the shop (again). My favorite has got to be the Beach Christmas one, which I do have. Also love the others I have, Grinch and Wizard of Oz, but the next one I am eyeing is Winter Wonderland, or Christmas pups, or Christmas cows, ahhhh!!! I don't know that I have just ONE favorite. I just love your bags! That kitten bag is freaking adorable and would be a great addition to my collection of your bags I seem to have become a hoarder of. LOL And as a mom of 3 myself... I totally get the struggle! They sure make us crazy at times, but I wouldn't trade my lack of time for myself for the world to get to spend all that time with my babies (even though my oldest is only an inch shorter than me at age 11!) Lol Always look forward to your videos and hearing about your life and babies! Would love to see your iron on embroidery designs! I have some vintage early 1900's ones I got from a yard sale a few years ago but they are so pretty and delicate I am so scared to use them and ruin them! Rock on girlie... you are amazing!
