I'm in my late 60's now and I remember the first "rubber" worms. Looked like a night crawler and hard as a rock. But the bass loved them. Then it was Jake's Producers super soft high floaters in Florida Grape. That is still the most productive bass lure I know. Texas rig with a sliding bullet weight and sometimes a rattle if the water is real dark. In that lake I would have been fishing a rubber frog. We use them here in SC and the catch is amazing.

When I was 15 years old I would find hidden lakes and sometimes on private property. Some of the lakes and ponds were on golf courses. Those bass had never seen a rubber worm or spinner. After 15 I told my friends the party was over or we could be arrested. I don't condone that kind of behavior but it was fun. I live in west central Florida. I lived on a lake. I did used to find some really nice lures in the cat tails. I used to modify them. My fave was Devils Horse top water. I put solder around the end of the lure. The lure would sit in the water straight up. I'd give it a tug and the thing would drop down under the surface and pop back up and bob. It was a killer lure.

If you think that muck is bad, there was a place in Texas where I used to waterski. You had to land on shore and if you came up short, you'd end up going literally KNEE DEEP into the mud. There was a lot of clay content in the soil there, and it was like quicksand in places - ain't gettin' out without help.

Cool that you discovered a new lake, I would have thought since it was so hidden, you’d have caught some larger ones. Regardless, it was a nice find. I was wondering since you were weighing those bass, have you fished in your pond lately? Only because I would like to see if the ones you’ve tagged (and with all the feeder fish you both stocked in the pond) have gotten any larger. Thanks for sharing, nice seeing you on the skiff again!

That opening sequence is why even with modern trolling motors you should still have the old tried and true anchor and rope. Pull that skiff right up and drop the anchor on shore a ways. If that is you don't like muck between the toes!
