Rakim hated the spotlight. He was about perfecting his rhymes - period. He'd record his tracks in the studio and head directly home, didn't wanna party, socialize, be elite, Nothing. True artist of hiphop

Rakim is the closest thing to a Jazz singer, coexisting both inside and outside the beat. Rakim never allows the beat to cage his bars, nor does he allow his bars to isolate or dominate the beat. He's like a Thelonious Monk Beat Poet. He's the most complete, most complex and most original stylist to bless a mic. Many may folllow, but the Leader leads.

As a drummer, the late 80s and early 90s in rap/hip-hop has absolutely some of the best drums and bass in any genre. Eric B. and Rakim, Geto Boys, Kool Keith, Ultramagnetic MCs all were doing incredible things and made songs that can hold up decades later.

Young people, take note to the fact that there's a specific reason why Rakim is widely regarded as one of the greatest MCS of all time. Because the music that he made is timeless and the problem today is that hip hop is made for the now for the moment. someday a hundred years from now and beyond some intergalactic world that the Earth is going to become someone will listen to this and find that Eric B and Rakim were awesome.

This is a classic, and I think Rakim is probably the greatest MC to ever do it, but this a garbage fucking take. There are some incredibly talented rap artists creating great music these days and comments like yours are just ignorant and out of touch. You probably dont even listen to that much music and have no idea whats out there right now besides whats on the radio.
