Talking about gadget man in 1964?, Erich Fromm will be very sad to know that in 2015, Gadgets are all we cared, bought, replaced old ones and bought new ones, worshipped and spent all our time in front of it.

Mankind has been Free Falling in this direction for quite some time. Advertisement is all about knowing the disposition of the audience you're targeting, and they're very aware of this void inside and they specifically target it aggressively for multinational corporate monopolies interests. And if the emptiness, unfufillment or insecurity is not there, then they create them in order to sell it back to you as if the solution can be solved externally, but it can only be solved internally, but that's not profitable because if it can be sold at all It can only be sold once.

I think we´ll soon be regognizing how important the ideas of Fromm were and still are - and how fatal forgetting them was - especially by psychologist. The cognitve revolution is about to begin.

Amazing back then he was talking about the gadget man and the love for the inanimate. My last phone came with the words "life companion" on the home screen from the factory. Nails on the head so far...still listening.

I just decided to delete all my social medIa platforms as I hate them. Illusion of the social. I went to see the dancers of the choreographer and black civil rights era Alvin Ailey. I felt alive sharing the suffering and pain they went through to liberation of their bodies and minds which as the performances progressed showed in their movements in every muscle and sinews. I don’t have a t.v., a car, or a house and I’m not affluent either. I sacrificed everything to dance while I could. Now I am injured and need to think alternatively. I m open to the world but with a disability I can’t access the world so I won’t. Social media is designed to make people envy each other and show off how marvellous they are. And gloat about themselves as compared to others.

Fromm has helped me a lot, especially since I translated one of his books in Albanian since 2000. I had to do a synoptic study, and read many of his works, just ro translate one book, "The Crysis of Psychoanalysis". It was easy to translate because he speaks from the heart, his humanity reverberates in all of his works. So glad I have found him again.

Thanks for posting! A side note, TV no doubt is a hindrance of men's love to re-unite with nature, but that was before he knew there would be one day we could just open sesame to such archaic treasures of this giant and his wisdom !😀 Men is still full of hope, like he predicted, if we could stop killing each other massively or mentally!

So many people knows the high value of his knowledge. But most of them doesn't know about the flexibility of this psychology knowledge. And they doesn't know how to convert(How to Apply) his psychology knowledge into their society and their life, effectively.

Hi Yang, You are quite correct in what you said. Practically all universities know little or nothing about Erich Fromm much less his teachings on what it means to be human. I have all his books and have yet to read them again since there is so much he has to offer- he saved my life.

+GnosisMan50 I discovered Erich Fromm by accident at age 18. I didn't even know who he was but was attracted to the title of his book called THE ART OF LOVING. After reading that I then sought out numerous of his other books. I am glad I did. No, I wasn't introduced to this in the university.

I, too, am disabled, and in an economic situation similar to yours. One danger with social media is that you can begin to think that people who are using usernames are actually at a level of rapport with you that you have become close acquaintances, if not friends. ( I think this is particularly likely in cases such as mine. I've been disabled since childhood. ) Another danger is something like its opposite: I have found myself being exceptionally rude, even cruel, to people who expressed a view which I thought was stupid. This, of course, is the ever present danger of forgetting that there is a living human being at the other end of cyberspace.

Thank you for sharing this. This is one of his best Fromm lectures I could find so far. It also helps to explain indirectly where he departs from the Frankfurt School and Herbert Marcuse. He sees all the responsibilities in the individual person, he does not criticize the capitalist society for historical materialist reasons. He remains a pure bourgeois agent.

Enjoyed listening to all the references raised by Erich Fromm. We indeed violate life by solely enjoying objects. if one needs a purpose those objects fulfil our creative nature. It's more an issue with the motives that are behind the material. Once we understand our spiritual nature our objects are put back in their correct order of worship. Creatures love to create so it's a case of utilising our products for the benefit of others. The Problem is always the heart. We need a new heart. Where can we buy one??? kzbin.info2gLfeeg_Pj4?feature=share

around 25:00 I think he was a little off. Automation made people even more slaves with less opportunity to ask the "deep " questions. It took the pandemic for people to really ask "what's important in my life?" Europe already knows that work/life balance is essential. North American corporations/businesses haven't figured that out yet.

We’ve got up stop using the word “spiritual”. Maybe refer to it as “the ‘s’ word”. It immediately invokes a God in some fashion and implies all sorts of external morals. We’re an evolved animal here on our own making things up as we go. There may be a God but they are removed from this existence. We have true freedom. Now what do we do with it? What is our purpose? That is what we have to address without some reference to God. I suggest a first step is simply to set things up so that we aren’t on a collision course with collapse or extinction. Once we get that straight we can consider other things. But the only way we can start to cast our attention in that direction is to dismiss our obsession with god / spiritual and focus our attention on Human Nature and how it distorts our actions into self defeating behavior in a modern world. Our focus on material consumption and display simply reflects our social nature. Buying and displaying things is one of the key ways we determine for ourselves, and demonstrate to others, our place in the social hierarchy. I think our awareness of status is second only to sex drive in how we operate in the world. These are two key components of human nature that drive so many of our actions.

What really bothers me about this kind of lectures is the fact that ordenary people are being blamed for the culture they are born into, and of wich they are the result. Alternative lifestyles are frowned upon and often made impossible through laws and regulations. And the culture creators/enforcers are always left out of the picture, as if they don't exist. I dislike the term, but ultimately this is nothing but a very refined form of 'victim blaming'.
