That thing was bigger than the boat! I'm not sure I'd take my Compass offshore, but I'm glad you proved it can be done.

Great video, I pick up my compass in 3 days and I have been wondering how it would handle off shore. Looks like it does great. Now I am even more anxious to pick it up, lol.

Finally a video BTB with the hobie compass. Great video. Thanks

Thanks Kevin, The Compass handles the same as the Outback offshore. That was our 5th trip with it offshore. At first I was nervous with the purchase but now im very happy after seeing how it handles in surf, Seas 2-4 and performance when fighting a big fish. Solid boat for the price.

I've taken the outback to the extreme in west coast multiple of times before. haven't tried the compass yet but would love to test it out and compare them one day.

I'm guessing the answer to the title question would be a resounding YES! For me, taking my kayak to that limit is a bit extreme, but it's nice to know it COULD happen. lol

So this video made me a believer that this Hobie Compass is the right one for my first fishing kayak because I will most likely not see fresh water nothing but Los Angeles Salty Harbor water. Seen the waves and the size of fish you pulled in like nothing with little struggle or boat tipping at all geez imma get one thank you
@DeepbluekayakfishingLLC4 жыл бұрын
It's definitely a solid kayak and can handle the open water.

I'm not sure about your opinion on other hobies, but I'm deciding between outback, compass, and revo, and I'm trying to find out which one is the safest, or best handling offshore (up to 4 foot swells).
@DeepbluekayakfishingLLC3 жыл бұрын
We use all 3 of those kayaks in our fleet. Each one has their pros and cons but all are definitely good choices for Offshore no doubt. The Outback has more room. The Revo is faster but much more narrow and not really enough room for a fish bag (Cant put a fish bag on the bow). Compass almost identical to Outback in terms of handling. Just up to you on whether you want the reverse drive or not. Big price different. More people are using the Outback or Compass offshore Vs the Revo

Great video That was awesome. I own a compass and I knew it can handle that offshore action where’s the compass haterz now 💪🏻

Yeah Its definitely a solid all around kayak

I realize the Compass is a capable kayak, and that its cost and weight make it an awesome choice for a fleet boat for guides and those who have to car top, but if you were going to buy just one Hobie for inshore and offshore personal use, which would you choose? Most of the offshore guys I see use Outbacks/Revos, and most of the inshore bass guys use PA's. It's a daunting task to chose because all Hobies are expensive, and you don't want to end up with buyers remorse. Thanks!
@DeepbluekayakfishingLLC6 жыл бұрын
Hands down without question Hobie Outback. Its the best all around kayak. Pro anglers are good but they very heavy and do very poorly in the wind. And for Offshore you better have zero surf.... When a wave breaks over the front, the PA will fill with water and it can't drain fast enough and becomes very tippy. Go with the outback you won't regret it!

I was leaning towards an OB. Thanks!

I had to make the same choice and went with the compass. After testing both, the compasses was 20 lbs. lighter, more spacious, slightly more stable, and has a better rudder. The Outback has reverse function on the mirage drive, more hull storage, more lumbar support on the seat. Other than the seat, I saw no real advantage for offshore fishing. Get the compass.
@DeepbluekayakfishingLLC6 жыл бұрын
Another good thing about the compass for offshore is it doesn't have a back hatch or front hatch. On rougher days when you are taking waves over the front and back water will get inside the outback through the front and back hatches. I carry a 10gallon live well so the back of my outback sits way lower so waves easily break over the back. The draw backs with the Compass is the seat isn't as good and the rudder is very small which makes it hard to turn if you fishing in wind. Like with any kayak there are pros and cons to each model but they are both awesome boats offshore!

Yeah the compass is essentially a lighter, faster, and more stable Outback. I take mine into the rough waters of Oahu, HI with zero worries.

Passport 12.0 and Compass will ride almost identical offshore. Both kayaks you don't want to load down with gear. Bring only what you need.

hobies can handle offshore but they aren't great for surf launches or coming back in the surf.. if you got hardly any surf or very small surf waves then its not hard. Out on the water past the surf hobies are great
@DeepbluekayakfishingLLC6 жыл бұрын
Yeah big surf launches are always challenging... anything under 3ft the Outbacks, Revolution and Compass do just fine. The Pro Anglers are awful in any surf lol
