It's not even JUST about the rap. BB released a huge range of material, and hip hop was just their main gig. All the jazz and funk and rock and soul and Latin infusion into their music made them easily a great recorded AND live band. In one concert, you've seen the same three guys cover hip hop party anthems, instrumental funk/soul songs, and old school original NYC hardcore punk. And to top it off, you've got some great backing musicians and one of the greatest DJs behind them.

Anyone who thinks the BB are not one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) rap groups ever does not understand hip hop and hip hop culture. Sure, Licensed To Ill was a bit of a novelty when it first got released, (mainly due to the slightly negative marketing, and idiot British press reports at the time) but still contained some unbelievably groundbreaking tracks. Then, just when everyone thought they'd faded away, Pauls Boutique took it to the next level. And it went on from there - groundbreaking and diverse samples and breaks, the like no-one had never seen before on any rap album - and they just kept churning out album after album of quality, unique, groundbreaking material. They were one of the first rap acts to take their show on the road, and successfully managed to reproduce their material live. Their longevity in the industry is virtually unsurpassed, and as someone else said below, if all this hasnt convinced you, then listen to the testiments of some of the true hip hop legends, and what they have to say about the BB - Flash, Chuck D, Eric B, LL, DMC, Eminem.....even people like Madonna, Elton John....... all saying how important the BB were, not just to Hip Hop usic, but to music as a whole. And these guys dont blow smoke up just anyone's backsides. The BB were legends. Period.

@@gregh_777 Wu-Tang Clan‎ is more of a collective different than Beastie Boys who are a group. Members of a collective do not regularly perform together, and are instead like-minded collaborators. Examples, Native Tongues Posse, Odd Future. Dungeon Family‎..... Here are a few example groups, Black Star, Goodie Mob, Clipse, Cypress Hill, EPMD. Are the BB the best group who knows that's subjective, two thing for sure they were one of the longest lasting and most successful.

I am a black dude raised in an all black neighborhood. License to Ill is one of the best rap albums of all times. The Beastie Boys are one of the best rap groups, black or white. Lots of folk on here are calling Raising Hell the best rap album of all time, I cant dispute that, but RUN DMC's first album will give any rap album a run for it's money. DAMN that album was great!!

This is true Erick. In 86 for me the big 3 albums were LL's "Radio", RunDMC's "Raising Hell" and the Beastie Boys "License to Ill". There were other good albums from UTFO (Skeezer Pleezer) Fat Boys (Big & Beautiful) and Whodini (Back in Black) but they were 2nd rate compared to the Big Three. Imo production had a lot to do with it. All these guy had skills on the mic but the big three had Rick Rubin on the production. Imo Raising Hell is the best hip hop album ever, followed by License to Ill.

So how do you feel about Run DMC then?lol The Beasties changed it up WAY more often than they did, especially in their later years. And he's not saying "they're the best MC's".lol... You're looking at this very narrowly, my friend...You're looking at this just from the technical aspect of rapping (btw even then you're still wrong) But what made the Beastie Boys fantastic was the quality of the compositions(their sampling was second to none and they can play their own instruments very well), not necessarily just their rapping skills. The artists you mentioned 'musically speaking' were only on the Beasties level for their first couple albums. Not to mention, Kane and Rakim were merely MC's, and that's it. The Beastie Boys did it all. They did their own sampling/tape looping, played their own instruments, created their own album covers, shot their own videos, and they also made funk and punk rock music. As artists they're so much more versatile and creative it's not even close. There were better rappers than them sure, but musically no other rap group could do all the different things Beastie Boys did. Also Sidebar: by the mid 90s Kane flat-out sucked. He got way too commercial and into the whole sex symbol thing. He lost all his edge, something the Beasties never did.
@Chris-is1rd
@Chris-is1rd 11 жыл бұрын
no...its just that i don't like hip hop with repetitive, predictable flow like the Beasties have done again and again and again and again and again for 25+ fucking years. To me, the best MC's of all time are Rakim, Kane, KRS-ONE, etc.
