For anyone who's lost someone; Stephen Sondheim wrote your feelings and Bernadette Peters sang them. RIP Stephen Sondheim

This is just one of the greatest performances of one of Sondheim's most achingly beautiful songs. No one can do this song like Bernadette, it's as simple as that. God, it just kills me every time.

This song clearly overwhelms her with emotion. After every other performance during the concert, she's quickly out of character once the applause starts. Here, the Bernadette Peters smile is absent, only given half-heartedly a few moments after she finishes singing. I think she feels this song on a personal level more than any other song in the concert, and it shows on her face and in her actions.

I've sung since very young. It's very difficult to sing a song like this bc Often it will remind you of someone you've lost. It'll get you when you least expect it. I've had many losses so I know! Who knows what Bernadette was thinking, feeling? God bless her.

This is a really good example of what it takes to sing Sondheim. It's not enough to have a good voice. You have to be a good actor. Sondheim's best songs are essentially sung monologues. Sondheim himself often said that he'd much rather cast actors who sing than singers who act.
@MsEustaciaVye7 жыл бұрын
Sondheim also said, " I'd rather chew on a rat's ball than allow any oll slapper sing this song" This was just after the Albert Hall concert
@thomasbeck73874 жыл бұрын
He has also said that he can't just sit down and write a song, that it has to be for a specific moment in the show. He wrote "Send in the Clowns" because Hal Prince told him Glynis Johns didn't have a second-act song and needed one. He suggested the scene, and Sondheim said he couldn't write a song because it wasn't Desiree's scene. Prince said he would direct it to make it her scene. Sondheim then wrote the song that, as he says, became his biggest mainstream hit!

I've never been a fan of musical theater because of the use of character voices. As a trained opera singer, the vocal manipulation always bothered me. Bernadette was always an exception because she did full throated singing. I stumbled upon this today and can't get enough. It is just so stunningly rendered. Wow! Just wow!

I love how genuine the emotion is in this performance. It doesn't feel like she's pretending or even acting. At 2:25 you can just feel how real this is for her. imho, it is SO difficult, when making music, to allow your emotional raggedness in full bloom, WHILE STILL MAINTAINING the ability to deliver the song with the intonation and physical support that great singing requires, AND YET not hold anything in reserve -- to allow the rest of the world to briefly live in the darkest saddest places in your soul -- and yet not collapse into a puddle of tears, BECAUSE YOU STILL HAVE TO SING AN AMAZING SONG -- and THIS version is the best (that I have heard) of ALL her renditions of this song -- it stuns me EVERY TIME I SIT BACK AND LET IT WASH OVER ME. The process is amazing!!! I do love her as she makes music. "Ain't it amazing when God makes you a musician."!!! :)

Love her rendition. I can not help but think of her late husband, Michael Wittenberg, so tragically dying in a helicopter crash along with three other souls on September 27, 2005, in Montenegro. When I hear and most importantly, see her sing this song, I am so deeply, deeply touched. Especially when she sings, “day after day, after day, etc. Wish I could “turn back time” for her when I think, feel and hear her loss. The five stages of grief, as developed by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler, of GRIEF, DENIAL, ANGER, BARGAINING, DEPRESSION, and finally, ACCEPTANCE can be seen here as Bernadette pours her heart out.
