Even though it's just part of Leela's coma dream, I totally believe Fry is the one human Bender would never destroy. Their friendship is just that strong. And it was really sweet of Fry to not only try to take the sting for Leela, but to then stay by her side for a full two weeks. I also love how much a relationship between Fry and Leela is teased and built up here. It feels like the true start of something special.

For me, it's not even that it's usually corny, it's that it's usually _infuriating._ It usually trivializes everything that just happened, jerks the audience around, wastes their time, spits on their emotional investment. I haven't fully teased out all the reasons this one works; but one of the reasons is that Leela's coma dream still _meant something_ even after it was over. She's always going to remember it, and it'll remind her of how Fry stayed by her side, and how awful it felt to think he was dead, and how reassuring his presence was whenever she hallucinated that he was there.

I love this episode so much, I always get teary-eyed at the reveal. Something about a "dead" person who loves someone still living so much they're trying to reach across the void to comfort or protect them gets me every time, and we got it a twofer of that in this episode! This also has some pretty stellar jokes in it.

in the VERY FIRST EPISODE, the Professor hands out crew chips from an envelope labeled "Contents Of Space Wasps' Stomach." Futurama plays the LONG game...
@christopherlundgren17002 жыл бұрын
That one wasn't an intentional set-up though. It was a throwaway joke that they decided to mine later for ideas, and changed it from wasps to bees with some hand-waving, because wasps don't make honey. They talk about it on the DVD commentary. Still cool how they would try to add continuity whenever they could.
@NoriMori19922 ай бұрын
@@christopherlundgren1700 Yeah, I figured it wasn't planned in advance because they changed it from wasps to bees. But honestly, I'm impressed that they managed to even keep that much consistency. I bet a writer could come up with a hundred interesting and diverse ways for the old crew to have died (or even not died, in some surprise twist) that might tempt them to throw out that setup from the first episode. But they not only stuck with that constraint, they spun it into one of their best episodes. That's what I call talent.
@NoriMori19922 ай бұрын
@@christopherlundgren1700 Kind of funny that that was their reason for changing it, because there are actually some species of wasp that DO make honey! Still, I don't blame them for changing it, it would've been HELLA weird from the viewers' perspective to have an episode about _wasp_ honey. (Also they wouldn't have been able to do that "Bee Happy" song, lol.)

The ones you didn't recognise in the lineup of Fry's past hook ups were the unnamed woman from the 21st century he took home way back in "Love's Labours Lost in Space" and Petunia, who Bender set him up with in "Put Your Head on My Shoulder". Oh, also, the amazon woman there isn't actually one of the ones known to have snu snu'd him in that episode; the blue mohawked amazon seen here was seen with Zapp, Fry was actually assigned to the black woman from the main amazon trio. Other more deep cut cameos in the funeral scene you may not have noticed were: -The cygnoids (those bug alien restaurant owners from the blernsball episode) -Seymour (still fossilized, leaning against Fry's coffin) -Some trisolians (the water people he was briefly emperor of in "My Three Suns") -Some "Xmas elves"/neptunians (from the second Xmas episode) -Guenter the monkey (from "Mars University") -US President Chester A. Arthur's head (from a minor gag in "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid") Another minor continuity error in this episode is that, while the grim fate of the previous Planet Express crew was alluded to way back in the Pilot, that episode showed Farnsworth retrieving the old crew's career chips from a folder marked "Contents of Space _Wasp's_ Stomach". Yes, wasps rather than bees. I believe the show's creators acknowledge in the DVD commentary it was just a blatant retcon rather than an accidental mistake, since they wanted to tell this story which necessitated bees rather than wasps.
@superjonh10002 жыл бұрын
If I'm not mistaken, in the snu snu episode it shows that the amazon women switched partners at some point, so it's possible she ended up with Fry at some point
@Zomdra2 жыл бұрын
@@superjonh1000 Oh sure, it's perfectly possible it happened offscreen, it's just always seemed a little weird to me, given the continuity/obscure callback heavy nature of that scene, bringing back the unnamed 21st century girl and even the previously unseen radiator he was intimate with, it's odd they didn't use the amazon we actually _know_ he snu snu'd with.

I mean wasps eat bees so maybe one ate the bee that ate the crew members and the chips ended up in their stomach. Or maybe the professor couldn’t be bothered to keep the details straight 😂
