I'm watching this video for the second time, but I just realized that this 3/6 by MTH was designed at the O scale. I just purchased a 3/6 for myself, but at the HO scale. It's a great train with all these neat features and am now just waiting for the passenger cars to arrive - all of which are difficult to find, even online.

The model looks fantastic, even though I'm not sure if there was ever an original blue painted type of this locomotive back then in service. Here's a translation of what they're saying during the starting sequence: Good day Otto! Good morning Sepp! I brought you something warm to eat. We still need to pick up coal. Why that? Last night was no one there anymore, now we have to do this. But then we have to hurry up! Brake tightened, water 8 cm over the nail. Fire's burning, 8 bar kettle pressure. Oh, today it's going to be warm again.

Lovely model & well presented thanks Eric. The K.Bay Sts.B. locos are the prettiest in the World. This classic Bavarian Pacific is no exception & went on to become a great design when the DRG took over the south German region & rolling stock.

Hi Eric, another benefit of a 1:45 scale is a prototypical correct 4 ft 8.5 inch gauge. Therefore this model is probably the most realistically scaled engine on your layout :)

The bigger outside cylinders are the low pressure cylinders and the smaller inside cylinders are the high pressure cylinders.

The Class S 3/6 steam locomotive of the Royal Bavarian State Railways (later Class 18.4-5 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn) were express train locomotives with a 4-6-2 Pacific (Whyte notation) or 2'C1' (UIC classification) wheel arrangement. A total of 159 engines were built between 1908 and 1931, and served with the railway until being retired in 1969. The sole survivor of the S 3/6 is #18 478. It was built in 1918 and thus the last one also with a streamlined driver's cab (Windschneidenfürerhaus). Today, the engine is in ownership of the Bavarian Railway Museum (Bayerisches Eisenbahnmuseum) in Nördlingen.

Great video. Have the S3/6 from Maerklin in Gauge1 as well as in HO. But none of these talk actually in the correct Bavarian language/ slang as this MTH one. So as a real guy from Munich this thing is a must have for me now!!

I'd love to see a DRB 52 in O gauge. The DRB 52 was, while a big part of the Holocaust, a big beautiful machine built for mixed traffic. Truly a European competitor to the Big Boy, two giants working for the same goal; carry tanks, coal, and ungodly amount of raw materials for the defense of the home country.

Eric, your videos a lots of fun. Please make them more fun by using less whistle, bell, and horn. The other engine sounds are nice to hear, too, but I can't hear them over all of the whistles, horns, and bells. You make a great point about low speed operation. I wonder if MTH and others would offer conversion kits with lower gear ratios to enhance low speed operation.

Nice video. I have one of these in N Scale but mine's green in color. Also I agree with what said about doing what you want with your trains and layout. I have American, British, German, and Japanese trains running on my layout.

I don't believe Mr. Siegel said it. But the reason why this and most of the other european trains from MTH are 1:43 scale is actually cause of their track gauge. Their gauge is 5 foot gauge. Our gauge as everyone knows is 4ft 8.5in.

1:43.5 (7mm / foot) is the correct scale ratio for 32mm gauge track (works out a whisker over 4' 8 1/2"). Russia is 5'. The central Euro countries are all 4' 8 1/2", (Spain exempt of course) :)

You'd be wrong in that respect, my friend. This is a Bavarian, or German, locomotive. Germans use the Standard 4' 8 1/2" track gauge that Americans use... Russians use a 5 foot track gauge, though... Also, it is correct what he said, because in Europe, their model trains are a combination of scale and gauge, meaning that the model standard gauge locomotives are really like narrow gauge models...

I don't have enough room to have every engine on the layout at once. There are usually about 20 engines on the layout at a time. I've changed the lighting to LED lights because they don't get at hot and they consume less power.

If you wish to see the "real thing" the "Deutsches Museum" in München (Munich) in Bavaria has one on display though this is the black and green version. I think the DB (German national rail) still have one in running order in the black version.

This is a very beautiful model. It's nice to see you take a look at a steam engine from my home country. I am also quite impressed by the Bavarian accent of the crew talk, it's quite decent, although the dialogue sounds a little bit forced and staged in my opinion. Overall, though, very nicely done! The spikes on the tender are actually neither antennae nor decorative but grab irons.

Another note on scale difference. In addition to the "Fish Out of Water" effect, European locomotives are generally smaller than US spec locomotives due to tunnel and terrain restrictions. With that, a 1:45 scale European loco should be close in size to a similar 1:48 scale US loco. Same goes for OO scale European locos and HO scale locos.

Awesome review Eric. I do have a couple questions to ask. You said you have 60 MTH engines just curious how many Lionel engines you have on your layout, and this is my last question I notice that the lighting on your layout looks different compared to the lighting you've had in your previous reviews and blogs did you install new lighting to give a different atmosphere to your layout, or was this a lighting change option on your camera, but either way it looks great.

Hey Eric, have you considered getting a few other o scale European steam engines for your layout? I know you primarily focus on American railways, but like you said, there are a LOT of other very beautiful European steam engines I think you'd like on your layout. Flying Scotsman, The Coronation class (especially the streamlined version), the Light Pacifics, and the class A4s are a few to consider. But like you said, it’s your layout. :)

This engine is outstanding :D the detail, the sound, the color, and what a smooth start! About those couplers, I get it that there are Europe style buffers and chains and those some weird looking model couplers. But that American knuckle on the tender looks too big. But there's a scale knuckle, right? Does it operate by remote too like the proto-coupler?

O scale here should also be 1/43 scale as the rail gauge is too wide for 1/48 scale, hence the "proto 48" groups. Their O scale trains operate on O scale track who's rails are about an eighth of an inch closer together. This is your true O scale 1/4" = 12". The European makers (and MTH), to accommodate these wider rails on what we call O scale scaled the models up a bit to be more prototypically fit to the rail gauge. O scale companies like Kohs builds their O scale models so the owner can decide which gauge they want. Just like the On30 vs. On3 gauges. On3 is more prototypically correct while On30 is too narrow by about an 1/8".

not true, a fair few British locomotives have had bells at various points in time, the GWR's "King George V" still wears a bell to this day, the LMS' "Royal Scot" has worn a bell on an off after its trip to the USA in the 1920s, the World famous Flying Scotsman also wore a bell when it visited the US and Canada in the late 60s and early 70s, and many locomotives running on tramways (in addition to being required to wear side valances and full cowcatchers) were required to wear a bell as a whistle was deemed to be too loud for use in warning pedestrians whilst in the middle of towns

There are no rules in hobbies. I'm getting into O gauge (there really is no scale, they run all over the place) and so far have US locos. I grew up in England so looked into an A4 Pacific (couldn't find one) and the Flying Scotsman. Holy shit the price was ridiculous, used for 1200 pounds? Otherwise it would be here. Who cares, get what you like, my N scale stuff consists of everything from American Standards to Nozomi.

It's the frame rate of the camera and the fact that the headlights are LEDS, which is probably causing that raining effect you are seeing. They're not actually flickering. Hope this helps! FRail Productions.
