how much money are you going to throw at it ? I reccomend just going megasquirt, Injectors, coils, headgasket and do the valve's a little do-over, put it back together, turbo charging in the end ;) cause, if a 1.2 Litre opel engine can do 150 whp, this should definately be good at 250 whp all day long :) electronic ignition and injection gives a ton of power :)

My friend bought a 78 Fairmont coupe for 500 bucks with a badass 302,B&M Megashifter and he put a 9 inch in the back...it would do 12's all day...it got a lifter tick so he got a Crane Cams kit for the top half...when we tore the intake off...we noticed he had a real 302 Boss from 1969 in it...the hilljack that sold him the car had no idea

Eric, great message About 15 years ago I had a friend that drove a Fairmont like yours (4 door). He drove it (stock) rather hard. One day the back seat cushion caught on fire due to the cat not having the heat shield and being clogged and therefore getting really hot. Just something to check. B-) Have fun

You would be surprised on bracket racing. I saw a guy once bring a 3-wheeler ATV to the track. It turned something like 36 seconds. He made it to the final few rounds. It psyched out many who red lighted having to wait over 20 seconds to start or they went under their posted time having to catch up with the ATV that was already 80% down the track. ;) The best race was an old barricuda and a VW beetle. At the start, you could hear the bug just ticking, nice V8 purr from the 'cuda. Lights went green, all you could hear from the 'cuda was it sucking air and not going anywhere fast. The bug roared to life, front wheels came up and it basically passed the 'cuda before they left the tree. My Fox-body Mustang is a lead sled at 2 tons. I was surprised to see the fearmont is just 2600lbs. I looked up the original 1/2 mile times are 20.6 at 68mph. Not bad for that tired 6-cyl ;)

Loved the video. My suggestion: How about starting with some basic tunning before going to actually replacing parts with higher performance ones? Like some ignition timing, air/fuel mixture, etc.? That way we could see how much a stock engine can give before actually modify it.

The Fear-Mont II. Love it! I'm predicting 1/4-mile times in the mid 12s when you're done swapping in a 5.0 from a Fox-body Mustang GT. Go for the latest model-year you can get your hands on -- I'd say a '92 with an AOD tranny. Throw some mods (cam, intake, headers, cylinder-heads, etc.) on that engine and you'll be pumping out 350+ hp easy, without a turbo or supercharger. Put a high-stall torque-converter, a shift-kit, and an 4R70W gear-set in that AOD and it'll be consistent as hell with a great acceleration off the line. Do something about that light-duty 6.75" rear-end you've got, too -- needs to be a 3.70 9" posi rear-end like what I've got in my '68 Galaxie. Best damn rear-end ever made, in my opinion. And the more you race, the better your reaction time's gonna be -- it's all about matting the pedal *just before* the light turns green -- somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 of a second before the green-light illuminates, depending on how responsive your throttle is. Takes a lot of practice to get it right, but it's totally possible to have a consistent reaction time at or below 0.1 seconds. Gonna be all kinds of fun when it's complete! Can't wait!
@minnsminns10 жыл бұрын
Cool you got through the tech. Here if you're gonna be doing under 110 at the finish they're a bit more relaxed about helmets and stuff. And if your car can't even do 110 they're even more relaxed about everything. "It's consistent, it's right in the 20s..."

I have great faith that with more track time and some hard work on the Fairmont you could easily break the 19 sec mark. At what point do they require a roll cage?
@Trials-and-Tribulations10 жыл бұрын
Depends on the track every Track rules are different. Possibly,Low 11's because eventually the driver will break into the 10's or 9's. I know someone with an ALL motor( fully built with forged internal bottom &top) stock appearing Mitsubishi eclipse with a non turbo chrysler DOHC 420a engine with Manual transmission. Who broke into the 10 second barrier. Which the owner has the highest horse power for an All motor, plus he still holds the reord to this day. Search, Bulletdsm on youtube for his videos.

In the 80's when these cars were still common an 18 sec run was considered good while a 19 or 20 was considered slow but "acceptable." The Ford Granadas, AMC Eagles, Chevy Malibus and Novas were not any quicker. When a 79 Corvette L48 (base) is running 9.6 to 60 and a 6.6 (403) Trans Am is at 11 seconds you get some perspective.

My last time at Edgewater I drove the tow vehicle. I towed a 92 Camaro with a 327 and accompanied by a S-10 Blazer with a 350. They made their runs and I got bored. Unhooked the trailer from my truck (2007 Dodge Ram 1500 4x2 Hemi), and ran faster. Thought it was funny. Of course they did not know how to build a car. I later tore apart both of their engines. The Blazer's number 5 and 7 cam lobes were flat. The Camaro had a blown head gasket. You can't just drop an unknown motor in a car. Happens so much around Cincy.

It is fun. It's legal. But be aware that your insurance is not "on your side" if something happens. In fact, you won't be in "good hands" at all. But if you can afford to fix it yourself, it's a blast. I see you found some oil outside the engine. I joined that club with my 94 Mustang a week ago. Or should I say, that smoke out the back of the car was not tire smoke. Now it's time for you to put a push rod 5.0 in the Fairmont and watch the ETs go down!
@davidroddick546510 жыл бұрын
Of course the 5.0 will also mean better brakes, better suspension, and a better transmission. But that's just all part of it. I hope you'll do most of this stuff with used parts that you rebuild. It will be a lot of fun to watch.

91 mph, top speed. Four of us drove from DC to NO for Mardi Gras in a very brown rented 4 door Fairmont. In Alabama, the highway was so empty we floored it for hours. 91 mph. Eventually, we caught up to some sorority girls in a Duster and they flashed their boobs then pulled away about 1 mph faster than the Fairmont could go. We were jettisoning weight to make it go faster (saw that in a war movie), when an Alabama State Trooper blew by us. We thought we were dead, but he kept going to the vanishing point followed, very, very slowly, by the sorority girls.
