It is just obscene how difficult they make it to replace the most likely part to wear out an fail. I've done my share of laptops and PCB board repairs but this is just so unnecessary. Some industrial engineers should be very embarrassed. These devices would last twice as long for most people if they could do one or two battery swaps though a cover plate with snaps and a gasket like older models; or even a few screws. There has to be a better way; this just makes me want to chuck it (which is of course the idea). P.S. this is a great guide though if I do decide to grit my teeth and actually take an hour or two and try this (don't forget this guy does this all the time and makes it look easy; i.e. he has the touch).
@derekfinch95863 жыл бұрын
I doubt if the engineers are embarrassed, I'm sure they were told to make battery replacement as difficult as possible.
@hartyewh13 жыл бұрын
It's not really very difficult when you've done it once. There are much worse models to open than this. To make devices smaller and to be able to use batteries with thinner exterior requires this as well. If the back just plopped open like in an old school Nokia and revealed all the internals people would break them much more often and the devices would be more at risk with dust and moisture.

@user-dw6ko5lh8b3 жыл бұрын
Yes, a battery replacement could in principle be just as easy as swapping out a SIM card. As others have also pointed out, certain manufacturers are intentionally making it more difficult than necessary to replace the battery. Can you imagine having to go through a 15+ step procedure to change the battery on your car? The "its microelectronics" argument doesn't hold water when it comes to replacing a phone battery because neither the component you want to swap out nor its connections are microscopic.

Just avoid buy phones like this. The original Moto G5 has a removable battery. Pocket-vote against this kind of behavior. ;)
@Bill926777 жыл бұрын
Well, keep in mind that the plus side is a water proof/resistant phone. That's the trade-off and a feature consumers are looking for. Additionally, many folks are in replacement mode before the device needs a battery replacement due to the hardware improvements that are still coming fast and furious. If you really want to replace the battery down the road, there are places and KZbin videos (for the brave) that'll do it.

You can buy a Moto G5 instead. The battery is easy to swap. But with the Moto G5 Plus, changing the battery is like solving a Chinese puzzle box.

Great guide, I successfully changed the battery in my G5 plus. FYI- I didn't need to detach the screen or remove the motherboard which saved some time. It requires great care to do this way, but it can be done. I had to "make" a tool out of a thin piece of plastic to slide under the battery to "cut" the glue.
@timezonewall6 жыл бұрын
@tzaunie since my phone is back together it's not really possible to do a tutorial at this point. Taking it apart was time consuming and carried the risk of breaking something. Just to clarify, when I said I didn't need to detach the screen, I meant I didn't remove the cables from the motherboard, obviously it has to be separated from the body.

Not clear. It does not look as if you need to remove the mother board at all though.

I tried this on my g3 and the screen stopped working after, but I did forget to remove two hidden screws and I guess I used too much force before I realised my mistake. Now my g5 battery has swollen so I guess it has to be changed. I vowed never to get one with a battery like this again, I saw the g5 had a removable battery so I assumed the g5s which I bought did too - a big big mistake! It does not. Looks real hard to change but what else can I do? I fear i will break it trying ☹

this reply is a bit late, but I personally prefer phones where you only have to remove back covers, without having to disassemble the front screen. That being said, it seems like more and more phones are built the way the moto g5 plus is :/

Depends. The battery will probably last about 2 years. Mine did. At that point many will just buy another phone. Takes some time, effort and a bit of handyman skill to replace the battery but it is not that hard if you are handy with tools and small parts.

I'm a Moto G5 S Plus user. My problem is that my turbo charger doesn't work properly. If I restart my phone, then my phone charges in about an hour and after 2-3 charging cycles, charging becomes extremely slow. If I again restart my phone, it again start charging quickly but only for 2-3 cycles, as stated early. I have to restart my phone every alternate day for "turbo charging". Pls advise. Thanks.

The battery price at $9 is good. But then you add tools, that brings it to $16.50, and for me shipping cost brings it up to $29. That's not all that bad, but it does look like a real pain to do the job. I may gamble the $29 when my battery gets worse.

Impossible for me. I was able to remove successfully the screen using a air heater, a debit card and a suction cup. But the 19 screws in the next step were impossible to remove. I was able to remove 5 ot 6 screws, but the rest were so hardly screwed that it was impossible to remove with my home screwdrivers. I tried hard, but in this case Motorola gains, programmed obsolescence gains, regular people and humanity loses.

Yeah you can remove the battery pretty easy without taking off the MB. Just head up the back a little and pull the convenient tab. Getting the screen off with out ruining it however, thats a trick. I ended up with lines and black spots.
@galtha58244 жыл бұрын
If you did not pry too hard on the screen before gently separating it with some heat and a playing card or other tool to break the seal you should not have black spots. I replaced my battery and no black spots. However, the instructions I saw said to not pry too much on the sides of the screen. I think that is because you can force some of the seal onto the underside of the screen. I found some of that when reassembling my phone. Had to gently scrape and pull it out with tweezers. After that no black spot or streaks. I suspect prying hard enough to bend the screen may also damage it. The screen needs to be heated and then gently break the seal around the edge and lift evenly until the entire screen comes up a bit from the main body. Don't force it or bend the screen.

I discovered that with my G5 Plus phone removing the motherboard was not necessary. I could not remove the one screw that holds the motherboard in after trying for some time. The cheap phillips screwdriver that came with the battery started to wear out and the phillips female part of the screw was starting to show wear also. Frustrated, I watched the video again and it looked like if I was careful where I pryed I could probably break loose the glue without removing the motherboard. Tried that and it worked great. Replaced the battery and reassembled the phone. Working good so far. Time will tell if the new battery is better than the old one but it should be.
@cjbht19minaret4 жыл бұрын
You don't have to remove the motherboard. Just use a few drops of 91% isopropyl around the battery to soften the adhesive and pull using the black tab.

I'll take water resist over easy battery replacement. Easier to resell a phone with poor battery condition than one with water damage. But clearly battery replace is something it's pay to have done rather than do it myself.
@timezonewall6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the failure mode is often where the battery swells up which will eventually cracks the screen or damage the digitizer (and as soon as it visibly swells the case, you've lost all water resistance). Even paying someone to do the battery replacement will not restore any water resistance it originally had. I did the repair myself, it was quite time intensive (took hours) and required great patience, it's not for most people.

I bought mine at costco. it has been almost 9 months and the battery is starting to give out....but not a problem....costco will replace or repair it....and if they can't (and it is probably cheaper to just give me a new phone) they will replace it. I knew about this flaw in the design when I bought it.....that is why i bought it at costco that has an iron tight guarantee.
@timezonewall6 жыл бұрын
Mine is failing now at only 16 months old with the battery expanding to the point the screen is bulging in the middle. This shouldn't happen until at least 30 months, especially since I am very careful with the battery never completely discharging it. The battery has lasted much longer on all other phones I've had.
@timezonewall6 жыл бұрын
@tzaunie Yes, it is stock. Not rooted or anything special.
@timezonewall6 жыл бұрын
I was successful in changing out the battery largely following this video. It is tricky to get the screen off intact requiring considerable time and patience. I don't recommend this for everyone as there is certainly a good change of breaking something. I had all the tools in the video plus "manufactured" some just for the purpose. I did not need to detach the screen from the motherboard, nor take out the motherboard. This saved some time, but it still took hours.
@galtha58244 жыл бұрын
@@timezonewall Agree. You don't have to remove the motherboard. Just need to be careful when prying out the battery to break the adhesive holding it to the case. Don't pry on anything that looks like electronics. Pull up on the tab and try to get under the battery with one of the small plastic pry tools. The battery might bend but it is no good anyway so no harm if it does. I can imagine that you don't need to remove the screen completely but not difficult to do that. By the time you get to the battery just need to remove a few connectors to get the screen out of the way. Might be better for some people to do that rather than take a chance on damaging the connectors or the screen.
@samwilkinsn29554 жыл бұрын
why didn't you just remove the back? You had to use the heat gun and a pry tool anyway and it's a lot easier to get to it from the back than the front period I used this procedure and even though it was my fault I damaged the display fingerprint sensor and proximity sensor and the phone now has a big bulge in it
