Jack's "CLASSIC SERIES"
This is filmed on old Kodak Super 8mm sound film, so the quality is not all that great. But these scenes are priceless at any quality.
This was filmed on the ex-Erie and ex-DL&W railroads in the mid 1970's.
Locations are all New Jersey. Glen Rock, Rutherford, E Rutherford, Waldwick, Ho-Ho-Kus, Mountain Lakes, Lake Hopatcong.
Please be sure to check out my many other video clips from
the 1970's up to today. God Bless

I grew up in Fairlawn, which is where the Bergen county line ran through. I remember getting several rides on the locomotives at Hoboken. 3372 was one of those locomotives. Recently, I saw an Erie Lackawanna video that showed that same locomotive on a siding rotting away. Most of those locomotives were sent to Mexico. The U33CH unit, which was what they used for passenger service to replace the E8’s. I remember when the lights would go out in the car before they left Hoboken because they were disconnecting shore power and powering up the head end unit on the locomotive. When they switch the power supply, that’s when the lights would go out. This video also shows what I think is the Garfield drill, which was a local freight that serviced the Fairlawn Industrial Park, including Nabisco and Lee & Perrins. Even from my childhood memories of over 50 years ago, I can still smell that Worcestershire sauce. Today that industrial park is pretty much gone and the property is being torn up for strip malls and condominiums. The siding and the switch off the main is completely removed. I remember when they used to have a manual crossover at that location. The daily freight would stop, All the cars and then pull up, back up through the crossover and then drop the train down the hill to get the locomotive on the opposite end.

Every railroad's history is a great story and Erie Lackawanna is one of the most interesting railroads I've read about.

Love the E-L logo and paint scheme. Thanks to the pool arrangement the E-L had with the Milwaukee Road I can run E-L engines on my midwestern-themed layout too!

I also lived in Emerson N.J from 1963 to 1986. I lived on Lincoln Blvd next to the R.R. crossing. I also remember having dinner @ the Emerson hotel. Bergen country has changed a lot since those days. I live in Ocean cty these days.

I use to live in Emerson N.J. from 1963 to 1986, I remember eating @ the Emerson Hotel as well, I also remember the Blue Bird Dinner on the corner of Ackerman & Kinderkamack rd as well, that's now a Dunkin Donuts. Bergen cty was a lot better place to live back then, then its now today, it's too conjested now. I now live in Ocean cty N.J. today, for the past 40 years.

What year did the EL abandoned the old Erie alignment though Middletown?
@SteveRoberts5330
@SteveRoberts5330 3 ай бұрын
It was abandoned by Metro-North in the 80's after the residential communities complained about the Port Jervis Service running right through their downtowns. Service was switched to the Graham (Freight Bypass) as rail was less-popular back then. In present times, these communities are kicking themselves for their short sighted decisions as passenger rail returns in popularity and practicality. The ROW still exists as a Rail-Trail.

Yes, I remember in the 70s. They had the main line which out west ran through Chester, Middletown, Goshen, and then Otisville. As a matter of fact, it used to be double track all the way up. After they switch to the graham line, they eventually took most of the rail out and the run pretty much from Suffern to Port Jervis is single track. I believe back in the 80s where the mainline and the Bergen county line came together into Ridgewood Junction was four tracks. Then in the mid 80s they removed the two outside tracks and now it is a run of three tracks from Ridgewood to Waldwick and then two tracks from Waldwick to Suffern. One of the biggest customers out there in Mahwah was the Ford plant. My father purchased the very first Ford Pinto that came off that assembly line in 1970. That factory has been closed since probably the mid 80s. and is now owned by I believe Samsung, Sanyo or some other Japanese electronics company.

What was that steam engine? And what was that diesel commuter that passed the steam one?
@1jackdk
@1jackdk 10 ай бұрын
The steam locomotive was ex-FEC 4-6-2 #148 that was running excursions that week for Ridgewood Days between Ridgewood and Waldwick. It is now restored and running in Florida. The diesel was a U34-CH built by GE for passenger service on the EL, and became NJDOT then NJT, and now all retired.
