Fantasic footage. I was slightly disappointed when it ended.

June of 1977 I was at the hump. All the rails were rust free. As if the yard tracks were still being used. Not a single car was in the bowl. They still had a soda machine at the top of the hump. The rails were being taken over by tall grass. What an "eerie" feeling it was. hahahahahahaha.

How could the rails be rust free if there was no action there. 1 year into Conrail and it was being felt all over. Abandomnet, downgrading, cut backs.

@@1940limited As I said. It was strange. All I could see were the (rust free)rails flowing in a sea of green grass. Obviously the rails were used to some degree at that point. It was eerie,,,,,,,,

Most of this footage was used in the 2nd vol of Vignettes of the Erie Lackawanna. But I always wanted to see the original film(s) to see what else Joe filmed. Nice shots of old Yard B, the trimmer crews at work, etc. Sure wish I could have gone to Marion then.

What a beautiful sight: Freight cars without graffiti!

Poor EL. Conrail less than a year away. They tried to stay out of it, but couldn't do it.

Does this really look like a railroad teetering on the brink of oblivion?
