Take a trip back to June 22, 1958! Climb aboard Lackawanna engine #851 FM H24-66 "Train master" with engineer Geo. B. Sprague and fireman Fred Bennett in Elmira, NY and ride to Scranton PA on a fast freight east! You'll see vintage engines and cars as you get a view from the cab of this 2400hp brute. The Trainmaster was one of the most poweful diesels of it's day. You'll stop at a siding and let the Phoebe Snow pass. You'll span Nicholson bridge and then enter a 3600 ft tunnel, then onto the yards at Scranton PA! Sorry there's no sound, footage was converted from 16mm film

TThe DL&W sure was a beautiful railroad back in those days with everything well maintained and intact. It's nice to see freight cars with the names of railroads all over the country instead of today's rolling stock which seems to have nothing but cryptic numbers and letters with tons of graffiti. Nice video. Thanks for sharing.

You're welcome! Glad it stirred up some great memories! Both the Erie (Rochester division) and the Lackawanna had tracks through Campbell (till the merge) so you probably saw both in the 50s! The Livonia Avon & Lakeville RR now operate on the tracks that run through Campbell (Erie Rochester)

What a treat! They were certainly a beautiful loco, especially when run long hood-forward, as here. Marvelous scenes, and I particularly like the shots of the crew. Thanks for posting this gem!

Might be the only live footage of the FM H-24-66 Train Master to date, there is only one "1" locomotive of it's type left found in Canada, which is no surprise since these bad boys were built there..It has so much aura built around it...Can only imagine what it would've been like to see these in real life, amazing quality for 1958!!!..The original and grand daddy of all High Hood's, well it should be.

Probably had that nice medium pitch roar that the FM opposed pistons were known for, but sadly I will never hear in person since the CLC-built FM H-liners and C-liners that once operated in the East Kootenays on the CPR were pulled out of service approximately 10 years before I was born...

Great video. Enjoyed it very much. Recognize a lot of those places. They look so different because they were newer.

I lived in Elmira, DLW tracks are gone but the ROW is still there, ik the areas based on the hills. I wish the DLW was still round I'd love 2 have ridden on them tracks.
