Well, the Grand Canal in China, at more than a thousand miles long, was dug with shovels...
@oldsguy354 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, the Panama Canal was dug with much larger Bucyrus shovels. Bucyrus merged with Erie Steam Shovel (formerly Ball Engine Manufacturing) in 1927, quite some time after the canal was completed. The Shovel in this video looks to be an Erie B built sometime in the late teens or early 20's, but I could be wrong about the dates. However, I can say for sure that it was built on the north side of West 12th street between Washington and Weschler Avenues in Erie, Pa. That Shovel propelled itself about a block west of there to a rail line where it loaded itself aboard for shipment to its new owner.

My story with old steam shovels goes back to when I was a kid. Remember one being off to the side of road as we went to and from our winter and spring vacation spot a hundred miles or so east of San Diego year after year. It just sat there abandoned. Its housing or cab was made out of wood and painted yellow or gold with a smokestack on top like this. Don't know what make or manufacturer. The time frame would be 1970-74. We only stopped going after my grandfather sold his lot that his RV trailer sat on. It was still there after our very last visit.

Why has chain drive been popular for so long?
@JohnDavies-cn3ro Жыл бұрын
For a lot of early motor vehicles, chain drive was stronger and more reliable than gear driven back axles, largely due to the limited metallurgy and casting techniques of the day. Scammell, in GB persisted in chain drive into the 1930's. Must admit, that Bulldog Mack needs a coat of paint!
