well clearly because their childhood was not normal. not only did they commit burglaries but also did poorly in school and avoided contact with others. it doesnt help the fact that Jose probably encouraged the burglary except getting caught. that was a big no no. none of what the menendez brothers did was because of money, it doesnt make sense since they were already brought up rich. and they lied that they didnt do the murder in the beginning because they thought that they could have a tiny chance to not go to jail or get the death sentence, but more importantly the fact that if they did admit to the murder, they'd eventually have to reveal WHY they did it, that is because of abuse. and Lyle wrote in a letter to erik that he didnt want to testify the abuse part because he believed that it would like killing them (jose and kitty) twice.
