It seems like many people are treating this Netflix series as a completely accurate account of events, when in fact, I believe Ryan Murphy is telling the story from multiple perspectives, not just Erik and Lyle’s. This not only heightens the drama-since it is a drama series-but also encourages viewers to explore the case further, as the differing viewpoints offer vastly contrasting narratives. Ultimately, it's the viewer's responsibility to research the facts themselves and not let a TV show shape their judgment entirely.

The system does fail children and I absolutely agree what they did to their parents and I’m not gonna lie and anyone who wants to tell me I’m wrong for that. Watching the series on Netflix I did not expect 100% accuracy, and I did search hoping to find their statements on how accurately the whole thing was portrayed. (which brought me here) it is disappointing they were unhappy with the product, however I personally think the show did a wonderful job at highlighting just how much the court fumbled and how the mass public unrightfully perceived the case, especially at the time. Times have changed. I think their unhappiness with the show comes with the fact they have been robbed of life as things have progressed, and they have not watched other shows. They do not know the extent of the true crime community or even how much the public has truly shifted in SA awareness. I think they’re scared that this may ruin their public image and rightfully so considering they may have a chance at getting out.

The abuse evidence at the second trial was limited to recent abuse before and after the crime. The child abuse was irrelevant and should have never been allowed at the first trial but the judge and prosecutors were being nice hoping that the child abuse evidence proved imminent fear at the time of the crime against BOTH parents. It is NO ONE'S fault but the brothers that their testimony's did NOT describe imminent fear of their mother. They had 3 years to think of stories to tell at the trial that proved imminent fear and they had defense attorneys that should have ensured that took place. Since that did not happen the juries could not agree to vote in the brothers' favor of whether or not they were abused and if the abuse was so extreme it caused them to be in imminent fear of both parents. The second trial was certainly a fair trial because it is no one's fault but the brothers they did NOT have the evidence and corroborating testimonies to prove imminent fear of both parents. I watched the Netflix documentary followed by the dramatisation. I found the homoerotic, incestuous tone of the dramatisation really disgusting. Whether or not you believe they committed murder or manslaughter, there was third party evidence that they lived in a consistently abusive household. The way this was treated in the show was sensationalist and inappropriately lighthearted at times. There were only a couple of scenes which actually detailed their allegations of horrific s*xual abuse and the fact that this was only subtely implied in the scenes with Erik as an adult and not as flashbacks when he and Lyle were children whitewashes the horror of the situation. In fact, I think the series actually continues the trope of minimising abuse of males. In my view, Ryan Murphy should stop making these dramas - they don't do justice to either the perpetrators or their victims. As for the brothers, if they were in the UK it's possible they could be deemed to have committed manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility (we don't have imperfect self-defence here) but even if they had been convicted of murder here, it's possible they would be out by now as life imprisonment is usually 25 years minimum followed by a chance of parole. It's rare for killers to receive a full-life term. It's clear that the killings were specific to their parents and they appeared from the documentary to accept and have remorse for what they did plus they have new evidence corroborating the abuse allegations, so I would advocate for their resentencing and consideration of release on parole.
