The Dale Jr. Download covered Erik Jones' release from Joe Gibbs Racing following the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season. Erik gives great insight into the vulnerability and embarrassment a driver experiences when being let go from a race team. He recalls the painful ordeal of having to tell his family and friends as well as having to finish out the season with a crew that he would be leaving at the end of the year.

There are pros and cons to big organizations like JGR, HMS, etc. And one of the big cons is that it is a 4 car stable and top tier team. And it's tough. But, Erik is in a good place at Petty-GMS, which is building from the ground up. And rumor has it they will have another partner in ownership for next year, and a well known person/former driver.

Running a racing team is a business. Erik doesn't have a sponsor to bring with him like Kurt Busch had Monster Energy, or Danica Patrick had Go Daddy. Sponsors will stick with a driver if their personality or demographic fits their brand. Dale Jr. will tell you that NASCAR Teams are bleeding money. Only a dedicated sponsor can support a team effort. When M&M's dropped Kyle Busch, he was left hanging like a horse thief on the prairie. Unfortunately, that's the state of racing today. I hate it as much as anyone. Erik's a solid driver with a good work ethic and driving style. I think he will be a good fit at Petty. The best possible outcome is that he gets some wins for The King next year. We can hope...

I saw a big example of not to give up, especially when you are a race driver, when your boss tells you that at the end of the season you are out. Sergio Perez, formula one, probed everyone that they were wrong, by racing his life, wining podiums and races. Now he’s one of the best drivers in the world, in one of the best formula one teams…dude probe them wrong by giving your heart in the race track, and win races, cause if they don’t want you…someone better ahead will be grab you, and make you better…

I think alot of people discount how much luck plays into success in racing. Whether its on the track or just a situation. He was fortunate enough to get a shot in a car when Kyle was hurt and showed he could hang. Then he was fortunate that Kenseth couldn't find sponsorship and then was fortunate enough to wind up at Petty who was able to revive itself, especially under the NG car. He did all the work and hopefully this story in the 43 has a good ending many years down the road. Sometimes the best doors are opened after what you think is a great one closes. Logano could probably attest to that as well.
@AngryKirbyHatesYou
@AngryKirbyHatesYou Жыл бұрын
It wasn't that Kenseth couldn't find sponsors, the sponsors of the 20 also worked with Erik in Xfinity and pushed Joe and Toyota to put Erik in the car
@zerodos_02
@zerodos_02 Жыл бұрын
@@AngryKirbyHatesYou If the sponsor is looking to go to a specific driver, that pretty much means the existing driver doesn't have sponsorship. Matt had struggled with it even when Dollar General left. If Matt was willing to take a drastic pay cut, I think JGR would have kept him but everyone wanted to shift to the younger/cheaper driver
@AngryKirbyHatesYou
@AngryKirbyHatesYou Жыл бұрын
@@zerodos_02 yeah but Matt finding sponsors had nothing to do with it. Stanley B&D had a deal with JGR to sponsor the 20. Even if Matt had gone out and brought new sponsors interested in joining it wouldn't have saved his career

I volunteered at the racetrack in Darlington. Joe Gibbs was alone in a tent. I walked up and spoke to him. He ignored me totally! Haven't liked him since. He's a total jerk. His grandson is just as arrogant.

Unfortunately Jones was almost on the other end of the cut throat part of Nascar these days. A 15-18th range talent with no money backing him. Back in the highs of Nascar, his level of talent would have a long career in Nascar, but unfortunately the decline in sponsor dollars have really screwed over talents like him.
@osubuckeyes14
@osubuckeyes14 Жыл бұрын
15th-18th range talent is selling him short. I know those were his point finishes at JGR, but he really just had rotten luck in the Chase, he always ran in the top 10 even tho he was like 20 years old. And his entire garbage team there (pit crew and crew chief) is now either flipping burgers or demoted to lower levels because they were just horrible.
