It’s about Sunni or Shia control of the region and that beef has been going on for millennia (as he said about the Persian Empire). Saddam (whose regime was Sunni) ruled over and mistreated the Shia majority in the country. Once he and his regime were toppled, the Shia majority planned on remaking Iraq into a Shia country aligned with Iran. The fighting that happened after the US invasion (yea it was an invasion, we had no business being there in the first place) was Shiites smashing on Sunni’s trying to control the country. No matter who was in power, there was going to be bloodshed!
