Fun day I spent repairing the wipers on my 74 westy. The wiper motor and gearbox are ticket snuggly under the dash. The gearbox has 1 plastic gear wheel. Found a replacement at a local salvage yard. The original plastic gear broke during a heavy summer storm as I was fighting traffic around Memphis - literally the worst moment, but as all things Westy, you make it work and enjoy the journey.

I had a splittie u bought in Vegas in 71, drove it home to Houston. Great but slooooow. Sold it and my wife and I bought a bay in 81 and it was Slooow. She didn’t understand this and kit couldn’t last. Now I’d like to have a vanagon to go camping and I am much more amenable to this whole slooow thing. Hope springs eternal

bad ass bus! I just got a 1984 Vanagon for free a couple of weeks ago. I'm in the process of getting everything sorted so I can get it back on the road. All it needs is a new exhaust system and clutch slave cylinder and she'll be good to go. I do hope to one day get a 70's air-cooled bus like this though. I just love the look of these old ones

Looking at a 1973 will start a RT 66 tour, this summer. Need to figure out an AC hook up running off a charger on the engine and an inverter. Live in Florida so AC is cool to have, no pun intended.

@@fpl_bailey not really, these engines are actually pretty simple unlike more modern engines which have more electronics, more moving parts, generally more complex and have tighter tolerances on moving parts. Theres also a huge community around these vans with people all around the world willing to help when they can, and theres a lot of information online to figure everything out urself

Dear Erik, what you say in the beginning is not entirely true. Volkswagens T1 series consistet, as you mention correctly, in beetles but this series also included the first kombis. That means, that the buses with the split windows were part of the T1 series. The T2 series began with T2a: No more splittet front windows, electricity went up from 6volts to 12, a few centimeters added in the general size, 1500cm3 engine added, etcetera. After a few years, the T2 series evolved to T2b. You can distinguish between T2a and T2b very easily through the location of the turn signal on the front of your bus. T2a has it on the bottom on the very sides, in T2b they moved up and are glued next to the frontern air entry. Your model is part of the T2b series. I know, that´s only theory, but interesting though. You have a very nice kombi and can consider yourself a lucky person.

+Christoph Schabasser Actually he was right, he wasn't refering to the T-Designation but to the type. Type 1 was the beetle, Type 2 is the bus to this day. The T refers to the generation of the bus: T1 (Splitwindow), T2 (Baywindow), T3 (Last one with rear engine), T4 T5 and the new T6 (Front engine)
