I’m 14, my dad has owned a bus since before I was born- never running- and a few weeks ago decided to restore it myself. Videos like these inspire me to keep going and to learn to do this in my future. Greeting from Britain 🤙🤙

Hey you two! I hope you guys are still around KZbin and still loving your Westy. I have had a love/hate affair with mine for over 38 yrs since buying her new in 1980. We raised our 3 kids camping in this van, and the two boys have both had times of ownership of the good old girl. Many breakdowns , and way more unforgettable memories and today I have rebuilt just about every system leaving the cosmetics for last. Like you, i taught myself how to weld and fabricate and still have some more panels to do, but everything else is brand new, and I drive it daily now after it sat in various garages for nearly 10 years. Last summer was our first camping trip in way to many yrs, my son and 8 yr old granddaughter ! I love this van, and the VW lifestyle, and little by little am expanding my comfort zone of places to travel to. Watching you guys live your dream was so much fun, and very uplifting! I hope you both have a life time of memories with your van, and hopefully pass that down to your own kids! Thanks for all the time and energy that i know goes into filming this video!!

My wife and I are about 15 years ahead of you and we still look back at those VW traveling years with utter joy….even the breakdowns at 2000 miles from home. :) (which we also had). Good on you guys for going for it. Those memories you’ll find to be special. Cheers

That's badass to start out knowing dick about restoring cars and to just jump in there and learn how to do it anyway. A lot of people who "already know how" have cars they will never restore. This just shows that when you're determined to accomplish your goals not much can stop you. Stellar job!

Dear Clark and Hillary, I can not express enough to you both how inspirational this video was/is. I am currently at a coffee shop dreaming about where I will be in the next 5 years once I finish school. And it hit me an epic road trip with a VW Bus for better or for worse. What I really love is the time, dedication, and resilience you two had as individuals and as a couple. Because of the journey, the breakdowns, the unexpected plans, etc. All of it you did together and it's beautiful to see you two weather all the tribulations, and hopefully look back in another 2 years and just smirk to yourselves at what you accomplished. I fell in love with both of your stories, both of your personalities, and the love you two have for each other. So thank you from me and the 220k people who get a glimpse of the beautiful road trip you had. I wish I had the time to express, in every way, how your video has impacted me. But I also have to get my life moving. Best of wishes, A dreamer

DEFINITELY look into a subaru 2.5 4 cyl engine conversion, maybe even a 5 speed subaru transmission conversion as well. There are tons of videos everywhere showing step by step and part by part on how to do it. You'll get 170 horsepower over the original VW engine that only had 65 horsepower. And Subaru engines are some of the most reliable engines in the world and hardly ever break down. your gas mileage will increase, too. I'm doing a restoration at the end of the year or a Vanagon so this video was exciting! Figured I'd give you guys some food for thought :)

First off kudos on the metal work and paint those were massive undertakings!!! I've done all that and I know how hard they can be. First Win. I drive a VW Bus, BUS not van okay, everyday. We camp in ours several times a year. Panama City, Cherokee NC, Chattanooga TN, Tampa Fl and other places in Ga. Each outing we learn more about who we are and how to stream line our packing, cooking and camp site setup. All of those things help maximize our camping experiences. Do it again, the more you break down the less things will brake the next time out. I've been to Tampa Florida and back with no issues and other countless trips with no issues. The Aircooled life is the best life, keep on moving with it. You will not regret it!
@clarkunderwood9 жыл бұрын
+rpm750 Right on! Good to hear! Both of our breakdowns were due to old rubber pieces disintegrating & after all the work I had done I still didn't know they existed until they failed ;) so I believe in a reliable trip. We have done many successful weekender trips. Maybe we will try another long one. Thanks for the encouragement maybe we will cross paths on the road!

I had an almost identical orange 75 VW Westphalia. I drove it about 1000 on a road trip and when I got back a valve had burned and it cost about $1800 to have the engine rebuilt. So that was an expensive camping trip and I didn't feel confident in going long distances after that, so I sold it. Now we go camping in a 1977 Trillium 4500 trailer (google it if you aren't sure what it is) and we tow it with a modern compact SUV. I think it gives the best of both worlds. We have a vintage trailer I can tinker with and it has a strong following online and we tow it with a reliable, modern, air-conditioned vehicle. I still love the idea of a VW van but I think our current set up is more realistic for us.

I also had a 74 Bus, also orange that sadly I pulled apart and never rebuilt, due to a move to the city for school. It was eventually sold that way when my parents got tired of looking at it. Happy to know that a family back home is enjoying it, though. I really admire the work you did on yours! The rust on mine wasn't quite as bad, but in parts of this video, it was like looking at my own vehicle because it was in all the same places. I was going to ask if your $7 part was a clutch cable, as I cringed a little when you said that, but read the comments. Loved the video!
