RDVMusic People are free to interpret music however they please, whether sitting in front of the piano or in the audience. Satie is long gone, yet here we are playing, listening, and breathing new life into his wonderful works. The day we stop interpreting art in new ways would be a sad day indeed.

Satie’s Gnossiennes have grown on me recently. I’ve begun to read music and am using these pieces to familiarise myself with the nosies and what not. So far I’m able to play numbers 1, 2, 3 and 5, planning on started No. 4 tomorrow! These pieces are really fun to play and each stand out from one another.

PianothShaveck I know that very well, but I still prefer to call it 7-eme gnosienne. It also sounds much more appealing to me when it's played as a grim gnosienne.
@PaulBartonPiano
@PaulBartonPiano 8 жыл бұрын
I can see you are a fan of this piece (like me) and aware of the discussion surrounding what is sometimes referred to as "Gnossienne No.7". I thought about including it in this video but (to me) it just doesn't quite fit into the same mood as all the preceding pieces. "Gnossienne No.7" - if you will - is a wonderful piece but is far more harmonically complex than the other Gnossienne, so I decided to record it separately. I agree with you, it's more appealing when its played fairly slow and grim ... For others reading this and perhaps discovering Satie, "Gnossienne No.7" as it's sometimes called, was composed in 1891 and included in the first act of "Fils des Étoiles" and reused in the beginning of "Trois morceaux en forme de poire". The Gnossiennes Nos. 4-6 were only published in 1968, long after Satie's death. None of these appear to have been numbered, nor even titled as "Gnossienne" by Satie himself. The sequence of these three Gnossiennes in the 1968 publication by Robert Caby does not correspond with the chronological order of composition. It is extremely unlikely that Satie would have seen these compositions as three members of a single set.

Background or Mood music. But the question is, "What sort of setting would resonate with this melancholia? I think if I would play this in the side room during Easter Dinner, they might throw me out! What _was_ he thinking? I don't think one could do anything or say anything with this music permeating the surroundings. That leaves Thought and Sight. Perhaps an art exhibit of a certain type. Satie's funeral? Serene love making? Spaced out in the wee hours of the morning! Opium den?

Erik Ryde I'm not sure. I think he was just an oddball, an experimenter and not afraid to stray outside the norms of music. Personally, I find it much more enjoyable playing some of his pieces without signatures and bar lines. It makes you feel the whole piece (to me, anyway)

Most melodic phrases end on linked 1/4 and 8th notes not 1/2s. (I should indicate that i'm not a good sight reader though, just started practicing actually. @Tanman-yl4oj
@Tanman-yl4oj 3 жыл бұрын
It is actually the fifth gnossienne that has the bar lines. As for why the rest do not, we don’t really know why; it’s one of Saties quirks. Here is a quote from the preface of my Satie sheet music book that I have at home: “‘Since we have reached a chapter about measure, we refer our readers to the pieces by Mr Erik Satie. It’s very simple in his case: there is none at all! They begin and they end... when they end.’... (Le Figaro Musical no. 24, September 1893, p.IV).”

When reading the gnossienne how do you know when to do accdentals? Say he says A#, how far do you go until you assme any A written is supposed to be an Anatural? Since there are no bar lines, and he certainly doesn't want you to assume all As are As unless told otherwise, so how do you know?
@GeodesicBruh
@GeodesicBruh 5 жыл бұрын
jimmy alderson by definition if you put an accidental in a measure its effect only lasts for that measure. So if you see an A# in a measure, and in the next Measure there’s an A, it’s A natural not A#. That’s what music theory says I don’t know if he wrote differently. (Btw mind the key of the piece)
@QuotePilgrim
@QuotePilgrim 4 жыл бұрын
Apart from naturals, all of the accidentals are explicitly indicated, even when they are not needed. You just assume a note is a natural if doesn't have an accidental. Also, every single natural note that comes after a sharp or flat note of the same name is indicated with a natural accidental. Clearly, the lack of barlines was taken into account and all of the necessary accidentals were used. There is zero ambiguity as to whether a note is sharp/flat or not. If there was an A# that is never followed by another A with a natural accidental, that would absolutely mean every single A after that one for the rest of the piece are also sharp, and that would be an example of very poorly notated sheet music, which is not the case here. Yes, I do realize I'm replying to a comment from a couple of years ago, and you probably have figured it out in that time, but I'm answering your question anyway just in case, and also because there could be people wondering the same thing who might come across this comment.

@@GeodesicBruh Your reply doesn't really answer the question that was actually being asked. You see, there are no measures in most of the Gnossiennes, so there is no concept of "next measure". This could cause some problems in theory, as you might have an A# early on and only have another A quite further into the piece with no accidental, in which case it wouldn't be very clear if it's supposed to be an A#. In practice, of course, that kind of issue is taken into account when notating the piece, so that second A would have a sharp accidental even if in theory it wouldn't need it (by virtue of being technically in the same measure) or, if supposed to be natural, would have the appropriate accidental to indicate that, since the previous one had a sharp.

Can I use the first 3 minutes for a short film I made? Or do I need licensing for this?

Ahsan Ali If you’re still wondering, these pieces should be royalty free and aren’t owned by Paul Barton himself. If I’m wrong, Paul Barton probably wouldn’t mind you using his recordings.

You are definitely an excellent pianist. But I think these pieces lose a little of their weirdness and enchantment when they're played too quickly
