I was thinking “yeah, sounded like she was the AH”… but then the rest of the story changed my mind. The artist actually told her to try making it herself, thereby giving her PERMISSION to copy the work. I understand that it was within an online argument, but you gotta be careful about what you write/say. If she’d then sold the pin herself, it would make it a little murky, but to recreate a design for personal use is allowed by law. It’s only in reproducing intellectual property for distribution that would be illegal…. But after the artist told her to make it, she could probably get away with it.
@paulapearlman2 жыл бұрын
As someone with a literal art degree, I think it’s perfectly fine to copy a design for your personal use. I’ve literally painted prints that would normally be $400 for my mom, who couldn’t justify spending that much for a print. Hell, I’ve had professors say that tracing even has its merits for practicing or checking anatomy. It would be different if the person in the story was selling it. If they were selling it or copying a character or saying things like “this is my design” it would be different. I think the artist and the op are both kind of antagonizing each other. In the artist’s defense, they could have been frustrated and burnt out. BUT hopefully the op realizes “oh this is actually a lot of work to make multiple of these pins.” Probably not but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Interestingly enough my uncle who died recently was going a bit crazy and dug a huge hole in the middle of his house. To what extent I don't know, because he would never see a doctor. But he was very much a loner and no one knew. According to his journals, he was doing this for when the apocalypse happened or the government took over. He started the hole in his bedroom and it went down about 7 ft and stretched a little past the front door. I have pics of it I like to show to the now filled hole.

It seems like I'm in the minority for this one, but like, what's wrong with him digging a tunnel? We don't know that anything bad/nefarious is happening, let the guy have his fun. There are huge mental health aspect no one is considering; 1. Exorcise makes the happy juices flow. 2. There is a huge amount of satisfaction that comes from working with ones hands, and he may not be creative or artistic enough to do anything "better" with his time. 3. This could well be just a way to get rid of excess energy that you don't get to vent during an office/WOF lifestyle. People could say "damn get a hobby" but they clearly have one, digging. You and I might find that task unappealing, but as long as there's nothing fishy going on, there is literally no harm in letting him enjoy his caveman tasks. Idk why but this one story made me feel bad for the guy.. maybe a bit too judgy on this one.

@@tessahartman7870 That's true, but we don't actually know that it's unsafe, or unhealthy. All we info we have on the safety is the Poster's, a non-expert, who has admittedly not even entered the tunnel. (Not that I blame them.) Poster even says that didn't have a problem with it until their friend brought it up. We also don't know the amount of research or effort that has been put into these safety concerns on his side. However, that's why I said "bad/nefarious" since it covers safety of both mole-man himself and any others who may be negatively impacted by either the structure itself or any illegal acts in connection. Their concerns over not socializing/spending much less time at home or with them seem to be the most relevant to your comment, and worth looking into themselves. I think this question should be framed more as a "how do I get my BF to take my concerns seriously," than "how do I get him to stop," since it is worse to me overall that he doesn't seem to acknowledge her concerns or to try to actually talk through them with her. It just seems like there's an underlying problem with their communication, and at the very least they could see someone to talk about those issues before trying to take away the only thing that seems to bring the guy some joy.
@sageschubert49702 жыл бұрын
Firstly, I DO understand that there may well be reason to stop the dig all together, and I see your points, but you're also not staying accurate with the story. A lot of the concern comes from speculation on the part of Poster. Speculation on the integrity of the tunnel itself and possible mental health concerns. My original comment is based on the actual content of the story, and their failure to; have any real conversation about it (sounds like his fault), provide any evidence that there are actual structural concerns past Poster's own feelings and speculation, or attempt to join into his dig or spend more time with him there. This last I only mention as poster said that digger isn't spending as much time at home with them. I just personally think it's more reasonable to have him scale back the digging to a more manageable amount, and/or find an agreeable middle ground, while also making sure digger is more understanding about any concerns on poster's behalf. I DO think both poster and digger are equally at fault for any friction on this topic. Quotes pulled directly from the story. "..I haven't seen the full extent of it.." ".. the front of the thing is deep and wide. Well put together at the front, which is the only part that I've seen.." "..I haven't gone into it, but it looked like the quality severely dropped as the tunnel went further with mostly becoming open dirt with some wood beams holding it up..." "..he always seems really happy when he comes back from digging.." "..this can't be good for his mental health, but I don't know how I can convince him to stop." It doesn't say that there is no support, it says that he stopped using cement beams and opted for wood instead, which Christian even jokes, "I believe that's how that normally goes." Not that he knows best, but just to say that the material switch doesn't necessarily denote any structural problems. They admit to not knowing the full extent, or even having entered the tunnel. The last quote is speculation on mental health even though he is happier after his digs, and shows that the title is more intentional than click bait, since it shows they do want him to stop all together. Btw, I like your replies, I'm not trying to piss anyone off (in case you may feel that way), just simply show I personally don't see that he NEEDS to stop entirely, but I do think there are concerns that need to be addressed by digger as well as both together as a couple.

Also check the original reddit thread and OP's page, there's a (blurry AF) photo for anyone interested. And this comment which I found in line with my feelings, "I'd have a serious talk to him about ventilation and safety concerns and make him learn more about it. Beyond that, who cares. If he is happy digging his hole, let him dig the hole. He may have some cool underground cavern dream or something, who knows. Just make sure he is doing it safely and in a way that will last. I'd bet there's people out there who would love to join in on his venture, so that could help solve some of the social concerns."

I’m an artist and if someone was able to copy my art I would appreciate that that be I inspired them and I would also think it was funny that they wanted my art that badly. I’m going to guess that the other lady probably did a really good job and it made the artist feel insecure or the artist wouldn’t have gotten that upset. If someone isn’t selling my art I don’t really care if they copy it and put on their bag… someone will see it and ask where they got it and it will eventually lead to them saying some lady sells them so I would call it advertising because most other people are not going to go out and make their own and those people that would are not my target customers because they never would have paid for my work in the first place.
