I’m sorry to have to tell you this but it’s not a cover of a 1960 song. It is the cover of a 1930s song. Please get your history right The House of the Rising Sun" is a traditional folk song, sometimes called "Rising Sun Blues". It tells of a person's life gone wrong in the city of New Orleans. Many versions also urge a sibling or parents and children to avoid the same fate. The song was first collected in Appalachia in the 1930s, but probably has its roots in traditional English folk song. The song is about a brothel in New Orleans. "The House Of The Rising Sun" was named after its occupant Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant (which means "Rising Sun" in French) and was open for business from 1862 (occupation by Union troops) until 1874 when it was closed due to complaints by neighbours.

Erik. Wow. This sent shivers down my spine. I live in Georgia. When I was only 13 or 14 I went with my dad to New Orleans. He was a truck driver. We spent a weekend there a couple of times. A friend of mine that I knew who lived there had an old army jeep that he drove. He was only a year or two older than me. Well, on Saturday night he drove me to the French Quarter in New Orleans. Wow, how this old country boy's eyes were opened to the evils of this world. I'll never forget that. Mamas tell your children not to do what I have done. Cause I know, I'm one. What a timely warning. Wow! The haunting piano playing at the beginning completely fooled me! Having heard the 'original' Animals version from the early 60s, I thought to myself 'no one can touch that' and this version completely blew me away! The Animals was one of my favorite groups growing up in the 60s, far more than the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, by far. THIS version is fantastic! Thank you for sharing it with us all!
