Love that you're spreading awareness on this sport Erik! This is Sepak Takraw , pronounced as (Se-pak Tak-rao) at least in the PH, it was the national sport of the Philippines until 2009. It's like volleyball in a sense that every body part can touch the ball except the... hands. This is a staple game on the SEA Games (Southeast Asian Games). Definitely a sport that's high on difficulty level!

Sepak Takraw concept is almost same as volleyball, firstball-set-spike-block, but cannot use hand. Top 3 in the world is Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia. Btw, the serve in the video is high level serve. it is like Jump Spike Serve is volleyball. They play best of 3, consist of 21 point per set. some player specified as setter, spiker, and blocker. just like volleyball. one more thing is, the player with red shirt casually receive the serve by using the upper thigh. which is insane!!

In Malaysia and Singapore they are called "Tekong" - the guy who serves. "Apit Kiri" - the guy left to him and "Apit Kanan" the guy on the right. Both can spike when the opportunity arises. And we also can use other parts of the body like the chest, knee etc. But not the hand.

Takraw is the name of the rattan weaved ball in Thai. Takra (ตะกร้า) means basket, which were traditionally weaved from rattan. Kraw (กร้อ) or Takraw (ตะกร้อ) was a kind of rattan weaved scooper. Not sure on the etymology or why it became the same word used for the ratten ball though.

You must see a match of Thailand team. I am proud to say that we are one of the best at this sport. We always have exciting matches against Malaysia, Indonesia and the Phillipines. The front left is like the setter so they are normally the one with the best ball-controlling skills, while the front right is the attacker. If you take a closer look at the Philippines team you'll notice high play skills. You can see when they attack they do a full turn mid-air which give you a strong kick. The Japan team do a different style of attacking with no turns which is an easier trick (but still not that easy). It's understandable since the sports are commonly played in the South East Asian countries. Japan and Korea are a bit new to this but they are getting better real fast! Again, you should watch a match of Thailand team! You'll be amazed.

Sepak (approx. say-puck) Takraw (Tuckraw pronounce the consonant for the second syllable as in "craw") is the name of the sport, portmanteau of Southeast Asian root languages. Sepak is Malay for "kick", mutually intelligible in Indonesian and Filipino (Malphindo) as well, which has deep root in Malay - spoken in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, and remotely related Philippines. Takraw refers to rattan woven ball, which is from its Thai language, also mutually intelligible in Khmer and perhaps Laotian and Burmese as well, not sure about Hmong - covers Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar.

There are two attacking styles. Red player used what we call roll spike as he kick over the opposite shoulder and rotates in the air. Blue player used what we call sunback spike as he kick over the same shoulder. Roll spike at highest level is more powerful but a bit more predictable. Sunback spike is harder to read as the attacker can place the ball better, kinda like hitting the ball thumbs up or thumbs down in volleyball to change hitting angle for middles... but with their foot. Some of the Malaysian killers are very good with both styles while Thailand always have most powerful attackers using roll spike exclusively. You could say Malaysians are more like slime hitting in volleyball while the Thais are like powerful Russian spikers who can make a dent on the gym floor with their powerful spikes. Thailand is the best now because of their pro league churning out larger pool of great players compared with Malaysia having amateur league and smaller pool of great players. Kinda like comparing Italian pro volleyball league with NCAA league. Oh, Thailand also got better and more consistent horsekick servers... Kinda like how the Brazilian jump serves changed volleyball awhile back... Service is the first attack. I think the next evolution in this sports will be the server becoming main setter who can choose to set to left or right side killers. Only 1 server I know who can do this consistently.

Three touches, same player can do all three touches if he/she wants to. Play to 21, three serves then switch to other team for three serves. All parts of body are OK except arms and hands. The "server" or tekong mixes up his serves--there's a wicked slow curve serve that comes off the sole of the tekong's foot, usually just drops over the net and can have a nasty spin as well. ...sometimes the "kill" shot at the net is also done like this for variety. Like others have already mentioned, you need to watch Thailand vs. Malaysia mens' teams or the Thai womens' team against ANY other womens' team. I'm a huge fan of this sport. There are variations such as two-person and four-person teams as well as a version where your team of eight or ten stand in a circle, kicking and heading two or three balls (I can't recall exactly, have only seen this version a couple times) into a mesh net goal hung from the ceiling--score as many as you can in a set time period. All types of sepak takraw are mad skills!

Basically, sepak takraw is volleyball that play using foot & head only. A few different things are: 1. the ball itself originally the use rattan but today they use synthetic plastic today. 2. number of player, only 3 players with the server, feeder/setter & striker/spiker/killer. 3. The serves, triplet match, the ball must be tossed to the server. 4. the number of touch ball sistem. 3 touch sistem similarly to vb, but in vb blocking touch isn't count, in takraw, blocking touch is counted as 1 touch. Hand touch is a fault. There is also the double match. Similar to triplet match, but the servis is a self tossing and at the baseline. Not in the servis circle as triplet.

In Malaysia / Malaya, this sports originally known as *SEPAK RAGA* . *How To Play?* In Malaysia, traditionally long time ago until now, they played : 1) In a circle with 6 - 10 players. 2) Usually they bump up the 'raga' ball, several times to balance it in right position *(same as the footballers skill),* but using their in-side foot, or upper foot, without the ball falling in ground. 3) Then they pass it randomly towards any player they want. 4) The next player is doing the same, bump up several time, and pass it randomly to other player. Without the ball falling down. 5) If the ball falling down / touch the ground, they need to start it back, by picking it with hand, and slowly throw it to the random player in opposite position. Player that been throwed the ball, must take the ball by leg/inside foot to continue bump on the ball without falling. 6) When all players in circle are well played in balancing the ball without fallen, automaticly they change the game to another steps (while in game), bump on several times, then they strikes with powerfull / ball speeding kick to any random players. 7) Other players that been striked off must withhold it while continues the bumps, without ball falling in the grounds. 8) If the ball falls in the ground, they need to start throw it back. 9) Same as football, any section of body able to touch off the ball, *EXCEPT HANDS* . If touch the hands, game need to starts again. *The main purposes* of this sportgame is to : - Balance the ball without falling. - Firmly/nicely control the ball that been takes from another player. - Striking the ball with speed to the opponents wether they can take it or not. - If the striking ball can be handled and nicely taken, it should be ok. But if *NOT* the takers will 'suffer' a pain from hard *'raga ball'* that made from a 'rattan' wood. This traditional game are still being fun played by the Malay around the world, until now. Normally they plays at the evening, after back from works. ************ After several centuries / decades, in modern day (70's - 90's) several places in south east asia that familiar with this game like Thailand (known as 'takraw' in Thailand), Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Filippines, Singapore, Brunei, they make it as official sports. Plays in indoor court, with several rules of bump countings, mark scoring (like badminton), wide/space area, using nets to divides the opponents and so on.. Anyway, both game (traditional and modern) are widely played now in south east asia. Thank you.

Historical record in Malaysia showed that it was played 600 years ago in the kingdom of Malacca (part of today modern Malaysia). I also agreed with Thailand that this is their traditional game because the border was not as it is right now. Until today there are malay communities in Thailand & there are thai communities in Malaysia. 600 years ago both Thailand & Malaysia do not exist yet, for centuries malay & thai share the passion for this sport. Sepak mean kick in malay, takraw mean rattan ball in thai. Traditionally played in the Philippine, Indonesia & Singapore too. Thailand followed by Malaysia still lead in this game but other asian countries fast catching up. Chinese claimed is also reasonable as they invented a lot of thing including gun powder but that does not mean they invent musket & rifle.

Sebak is name in Malaysian, Takraw is name inThai, these two words combine to form the name of this sport.

I taught High School math and science at a charter school for 2 years. They had no PE teacher so they made me do it and I got to build the curriculum. I decided on International Sports, and we played Volleyball, Handball, Rugby, and Takraw along with a few others. My proudest moment was watching kids who could barely kick the ball 4 weeks before correctly serve and then control-pass-play the ball back and forth 6 times before it hit the ground. I about cried.

Max 3 touches collectively per side before it must pass over the net. Literally any body part is touch legal EXCEPT shoulders, arms, and hands. iirc 3 serves before it changes over to the other team.

A block in takraw is a touch (unlike volleyball). A player can do 3 touches on his own.

Once played this game in highschool and a sprained wrist and ankle and severe dehydration later we finally won, it's not as dangerous if you didn't spam flying crescent kicks all the time which i did but it feels so good to score that way

I'm Southeast Asian and I really tried to get into this sport when I was younger but I just didn't have the coordination nor the flexibility to play it lmao. I still don't but I love watching it

The score system is badminton, the court is basically the same as badminton court but the net is a little higher than badminton. Yeah, you could sum it up as a concatenation of martial arts and ball kick. Each team can serve the other twice like badminton I think. Yeah, hope to see this game in Olympics. It's insane indeed. So much acrobatics. But I've seen more insane 360 flip when the player want to smash into the other side. If you search enough you can find a video where it shows the longest rally; both sides give and take, it's really cool, dang!

We should introduce this sport to capoiera practitioners in Brazil. I surely believe they will be interested in taking this sport as it has almost the same movement as their sport.

Hey try search "sepak takraw lipat tongkat" that technique is almost identical to capoeira kicks but not really that efficient in todays playstyle as it lacks most of strikers creativity to outplay the opponents blockers while in mid air

Takraw is Thai word Sepak. Is Malay word Means that small ball. When I was young these balls made from Rattan but nowadays they use plastic for competition. Mostly school Girls in Thailand had Takraw class same as basketball or volleyball class.
