The world was captivated when three people died and one was left seriously ill from suspected mushroom poisoning after a lunch at a home in Leongatha in regional Victoria. And the intrigue has only intensified now that the host of that meal, 49-year-old Erin Patterson, has been charged with three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder.
The three people that died after the beef wellington meal were the host’s former in-laws Don and Gail Patterson as well as Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson, whose husband Ian recovered after being seriously ill. The charges also include 4 counts of attempted murder which relate to Erin’s estranged husband Simon Patterson, who wasn’t at the lunch.
In this episode, criminologist Xanthe Mallett explains the investigation into the 49-year-old and whether she can receive a fair trial.
