The UK heatwave had me really worried this time. My Syrian really seemed uncomfortable this time. Another cheapesh save was a small dog cooling Mat from Amazon. I put it under his cage after freezing it for a night and it lasted several hrs.

We freeze the entire sandbath and put it back an hour before our hammy wakes up. During the UK heatwave, this was fab cause he could lay there and chill in the cool sand.

I think my ham got to hot! I live where it’s always hot. In Florida here. I just got him and he started acting so weird. Thank you for this most helpful! He’s been drinking a lot of water and sleeping and like you said all those signs. So glad to know that this is what it is. I have a fan blowing on it now. 😊 great video! Now my ham can be happy and want to come out and play with me again.

I've found that plastic cages like the Zoozone heat up in the heat. I had a Syrian in a Gabber Rex cage years and years ago and she passes away from heatstroke as i was young and less knowledgeable at the time and didn't realise, then a few years ago i had a Robo in a Zoozone and he was struggling, so i moved him to our bathroom as it was cooler and went out and bought him a wire cage and he was fine in that.

Till now I never knew heat will kill them. My first little hammy died due to heat yesterday. He was just 3 months old😞. He ate well in morning. And try to sleep outside. Then later he went into the cardboard enclosure..I thought it's normal behaviour. All of a sudden, evening he was found flat outside with low breathing. On the way to hospital he s gone

Hello, I also live in Cyprus. I have a little dwarf hamster called Blue, who will be 2 years old in October and she is really struggling with the heat. I am trying my best to keep her cool, but she keeps digging away her bedding and then peeing and sleeping in it. Is there any way I can prevent this as I don't want her urine to irritate her fur? Thanks :)

How deep is her bedding? This may be solved simply by giving her more substrate which will help absorb the urine. If it's a new behaviour though it could be age related, some elderly hamsters can have trouble keeping clean and just need a bit of extra care. If this is the case you may just have to try and wipe her down with a wet wipe after she gets dirty :)

I know Erin already replied but here is an idea... maybe try to provide a hamster toilet or something... I’m not very sure why but maybe ur hamster will pee in the toilet rather than on the substrate. Hope this helps.

Yes they are! I put ice in their water bowls and there's never been tummy trouble. Obviously monitor your hamster just in case, but they should be fine.

I've not heard of hamsters having issues with ice and personally haven't experienced any problems with it, so I believe it an issue that only affects some small animals like rabbits and I think guinea pigs too
