Me. Ernie, you bring great beautiful memories of a time when there was a shoe repair/shine shop on every two blocks in San Antonio Texas on the Westside. My dad was a shoe cobbler when he was s young man and then got drafted into the US Army in 1941, and became infantry during WW II. He was a Mexican immigrant without citizenship, but still went to the Pacific war theatre and fought the Japanese in the Philippines as a proud Mexican National. He eared s Bronze Star and was naturalized a proud American after his discharge. He was proud to have started his adult life as a shoe cobbler. Thanks for your expertise Mr.Ernie. Love your videos. You are awesome.

I love watching Ernie work his magic! I don't even own a pair of boots or shoes worth shining. But I will someday, and hopefully I can visit Texas and pay Ernie to do this in person.

I dont personally like a polish shine on my dress shoes or my boots....but I would sure feel privileged to have this man take care of my footwear. I love a tradesman, and this guy is exactly that. My wife and I raised our twin sons to work hard in life. We aren’t opposed to higher education, as my wife is a licensed teacher and I have an engineering background, but we all work in our home renovations business now. We are all hands on skilled tradesman that take pride in what we do. I wish so badly that the apprenticeships of long ago were still a part of raising our young ones. Instead of simply paying for school, these young ones should be paying to have someone like this gentleman to take them under his wing and teach them the value of work...of skill...and of pride.

It truly is an art, shoeshining, especially when a master does it, more to it than just buying a fancy brush and polish. I too wonder what material Mr Ernie Cantu is using for the rags. Retailers seem to recommend chamois but I see people using old T-shirts to the same effect. One more question: is it correct to assume that shoeshining is in something of a revival? I might be wrong but it seems to me that there was a period, 15 or 20 years, when most people were buying cheaper shoes and changing them frequently, one almost didn't see a shoeshine stand, whereas now high quality shoes seem to be back in style and as they need proper care, shoeshining is back. It's either that or it's just me getting older and spending more on an average pair.
