Lovely interview. It would be remiss if I didn't comment. I am very proud of your work chronicling the Jamaican musical heritage. To learn the history, struggle, experience of these musicians, artists and entertainers who have contributed to our lives and brightened our days. Ernie's voice is still so smooth. We have a lot of treasure in these people. Mine the treasure befits they're gone.

I remember Ernie’s two sisters, N-J and K-A acting as backup singers for him while attending Ferncourt High. I had just started attending Ferncourt (1965) then and they were like celebrities to us “new students.” Years later, Ernie had a one-man band in Toronto and every Sunday afternoon all road led to Scarborough at Club Paradise? where he played all the instruments while singing. I enjoyed his music then and now. His songs are easy to remember. I remember us as kids singing “Pitta patta” during Anniversary Album but had no idea what the song was about when the woman said “Oh Ernie”. 😀. Best interview to date!!!!!

@@TeachDem Reggae classics (like other genre) could be defined as: music that transcends time in it's listening appeal. Ernie Smith body of work is classical imo. Because of your interview, I listened to his Greatest Hits album. All fresh considering coming from the 70's &80's.... In fact, I am planning to listen to his entire body of work. I did the same with Ken Booth after your excellent interview. All artists are not equal. I hold nothing against artists of lesser quality.

Well done Teach Dem. Took him in once on JBC TV's 'Where It's At." He sported soul hairstyle and sideburns then....somehow that's how I still see him in my mind. It hurts me that JBC burnt down destroying it's library thus depriving us (and generations to come) of all those valuable recordings such as Where It's At... Ring Ding...School Challenge Quiz (with Dennis Hall)...API...old news clips, commercialsetc. But such is life. I love Ernie Smith's songs. My favorite is 'Life is Just for Living' and the extended Red Stripe commercial that went with it. When Ernie started to grow his locks some people were upset. I even overhead one man saying that Ernie was too intelligent so he wasn't going to remain Rasta for long!😄😁 Thanks again Teach Dem, you're a young man with a real ancient heart....an under-cover elder!😊❤😄

I am just curious, though, but how is it Mr. Smith is able to sit in that same position for so long without suffering any cramps in his legs? It just seems so painful to me. Well done, TD! Thanks a million for this. Couple of things I must add... (i) At 54:11 Ernie must have forgotten that Perry Henzell was the producer of the "Life is just for Living" Red Stripe ad. So they've known each other since at least 1972. I was in that commercial myself (my part recorded at Discovery Bay) and I was actually approached by Perry himself on JBC premises. (ii) Ernie's first song "I can't take it" came out in 1967 or very early 1968. I recall performing it in my school's auditorium for one year's "grub concert" and I know for sure it wasn't during my graduating year, 1969. That would make it some 3+ years earlier than his hit song "Bend down". I caught and enjoyed Ernie Smith in concert in Hartford about 3 months ago. And he did perform for more than 2 hours then, so me no know wha' him a chat bout, say him good only fe 1 hour. LOL. --Æ.
