The great Ernst Busch performs one of the most famous of European revolutionary songs of the early 20th Century. The lyrics derive from a 1929 poem by Erich Weinert, which implored the working classes of the world to unite against the pro-war policies of the capitalist elite. In 1931, the German composer Hanns Eisler, a dedicated supporter of the cause of communism, was asked to compose new music to support the poem for a film entitled HELL ON EARTH. The film was revised and re-recorded in 1938. This became the most famous version, and can be seen here in my video upload, presented on a movie screen at the back of the modern concert hall, with Busch's voice coming through loud and clear from the screen. In this concert, which was filmed around 1995, the film's original mono music track receives spectacular support (in stereo) from the modern-day Ernst Busch Choir, performing the chorus parts with downright operatic gusto. The concert was featured in 1996 in the documentary film SOLIDARITY SONG: THE HANNS EISLER STORY, from which this video was sourced and uploaded.

I wish my colleagues at work where that class conscious and organized. Out of around 80 co-workers around 4 are Union members. Liberal ones. I try to imagine being a factory worker in the 1920s. Having comrades. Acting in solidarity. Organizing. Striking. Protesting. Maybe even singing communist songs while doing so. Having a clear understanding of what their role is and how the relationship towards your boss is.

Historically the prevalence of the Biblical faiths helped. A continuous theme in anti-union campaigns is undermining community spirit and civic mindedness, including the denigration of religion.

​@@patrickholt2270Feels like it is impossible. Capitalist indoctrination is hard. And then there is their fear of conflict and tendency to swallow everything. They don't fight back because out of the fear to lose and get into more trouble. I tried to get them to join a Union at least for legal representation and not having to fight on their own, but somehow paying 30 Euro monthly is too expensive. They atomized us workers. Destroyed class consciousness. Individualized our problems and made us afraid of losing priviliges (that might not be even there). I'm afraid to move forward things have to become much, much worse. It is indoctrination from childhood on. You can't get people to snap out of it with compassion and reasoning. Just like you can't convince religios people that evidence points in the way there is no god and the probability of their chosen religion being wrong is very likely. And I'm from central Europe. In other places things might be much worse. Anyway. My plan is to be a candidate for the next election of the workers council and try at least to push back against management.

You're right, I've just been doing some further reading on the subject and it turns out this is not the only known film of Busch singing this song -- there is one other, filmed some years earlier. He first recited it on film In 1931, at the end of the anti-war movie HELL ON EARTH. The film was revised in 1938. That's the version which you see projected on the screen in the background of the concert presented in my video upload. This concert itself was recorded sometime shortly before 1995, when the documentary SOLIDARITY SONG: THE HANNS EISLER STORY was made. The original mono music recording heard on the film soundtrack is enhanced, and to an extent drowned out, by the stereo overlay of the modern concert orchestra, though Busch's vocal is allowed to come through loud and clear in the mix.

The clip comes from the 1996 documentary film SOLIDARITY SONG: THE HANS EISLER STORY, which featured fresh recordings of several Eisler songs and anthems, including "Secret Mobilisation". During the 1996 performance, the 1931 film-clip was projected onto the wall behind the orchestra, allowing the documentarians to combine Ernst Busch's original 1931 recital with the newly recorded 1996 orchestra and chorus.
