Thanks to Curiosity Stream for sponsoring today’s video. 🎄❄️ This video is dedicated to my patrons who chose the topic for this video. As a way to thank you, I devoted more time than I normally do to researching and writing the narrative that totals at around 50-55 minutes in duration. Thank you for supporting my work! The Battle of Catalaunian Fields was one of most enthralling military engagements in history. Doing research on this topic was amazingly fun. I highly recommend you check out the sources I used for this video, and give them the credit that they deserve. It's thanks to them that we get to learn about these battles in such amazing detail.

@@jyanbei I don't think historians think of them as barbarians. It's more like the Romans referred to them as barbarians, so it's easier to stick to the naming. Thanks HistroyMarche for the episode! I should say it is a well balanced series of events that covers the missing parts of this period. I used to learn about the Huns - as an unstoppable force that landed over the stage, without anyone's capability to get them out, but there was not a summary about what was happening at the same time with the other factions, nor about the background of the Hunnic internal mechanisms, and the role of Aetius during that period. These details provide much lessons for every state to learn, these were the ones Rome overlooked, and thus paid dearly with its own imperial existence.

@@HistoryMarche Oh also just another idea if you are ever struggling for ideas on videos to make. Emperor Justinian 2nd's life is one to behold and should literally have a tv series or film. Born with the name Justinian and raised with the hope of being a great emperor like his Justinian the great. He started off promising by winning back control of areas of the balkans but he inherited a Byzantine Empire in an uneasy peace with the Arabs and confidence got the better of him and he started a war and got crushed so much so a revolt in Constantinople sprung up and he was deposed losing his nose in the process. He went on exile in the Crimea where he evaded imperial assassins when finally he fled to the steppes and married a daughter of a Khazar Khagan who offered soldier to restore him on the throne. He regains the Byzantine throne with Bulgar and Khazar support and ruled like a complete vengeful despot until he was finally removed from the throne in a revolt. It is just an interesting character arc as his first reign had real promise as he ruled rather fairly and made key reorganizations of the theme but he got way too cocky. The second reign was just pure vegeance and the years of exile took its toll on him. It is just an idea as he is not known much but it is an interesting story.

This is such a messy time in history. So hard to keep track of every important group and leader, but this vid does a great job of breaking it down. The aftermath of the chaos of the fifth century: •Iberian Peninsula: Visigoths control most; Suebi control northwest corner. Visigoths go on to establish a kingdom in Hispania and south coastal France until the Muslims invade in the early 700s •North Africa: Vandals establish a kingdom based out of Carthage (some 600 years after Rome destroyed the Carthaginians). Vandals control N Africa, Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily until Byzantine emperor Justinian reclaims those lands about a hundred years later. •France: The Franks eventually establish Western European hegemony by conquering all of France (taking out Burgundians, Alamanis, etc), Belgium, Netherlands, and much of Germany. This empire eventually splits into the proto-French and German modern states. •Italy: The Ostrogoths eventually gain control of Italy and hold on to parts of the peninsula for quite a while, losing some of it to the Byzantines, some to the church, etc •Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire: Maintains control of the east for another 200+ years; loses Egypt, Africa, Spain, the Levant, Syria to Muslim conquests but stays a major European power for another 1000 years until its fall at the hands of the Ottomans in 1453. •Britain: Germanic Anglo-Saxons push the local Romano-Celtic peeps into Wales, Cornwall, and Scotland. Anglos set up several Germanic kingdoms in Britain, stave off Viking incursions and eventually unite all of England under one banner - right before a Latinized/Franchified Viking named Norman invaded.

Every time I've read about this period before I got really confused with all the people involved and all the political intrigue. This is maybe the first time I understand the context of this events. Good job!

I`ve been here since you were covering niche topics like romanian military leaders. Your quality and skills were astounding then and even more astounding now. Keep going, and maybe cover Mircea too at some point, to complete the pantheon of romanian historical figures.

Definitely will do Mircea. Thanks for sticking around on the channel :)

One has to wonder why every member of the Theodosian house was completely incompitant...

maybe being the first religiously Christian Emperors had something to do with it. These are the people who set the Library of Alexandria on fire on purpose -Caesar did it by accident.

Well THeodosius the elder was a top tier general. Theodosius the emperor was ok-ish. I think people give him too much shit due to the fact that he died early from a fever

Theodosius II was quite competent, and weathered the worst of the turmoil of the 5th century successfully.

New around here and i'm glad there is a channel covering the late Roman Empire! I was pretty sad after Dovahhatty's series on Rome ended. Subscribed and clicked the bell for part 2!
