On October 30th, 2023, I was on my way to New Westminster when I witnessed a silver BMW weaving in and out of traffic behind me whilst merging on to Hwy 1 Eastbound at Capilano Rd. When the driver passed me in the right lane I noticed he was wearing a balaclava and all black clothing. I didn't think much of it until we got down the cut and he started gunning it around vehicles. On second narrows, I made the decision to call RCMP non-emerge, and was requested by the dispatcher for a license plate and description of the vehicle. I mentioned that he wouldn't be hard to miss; a 20ft ladder strapped with a single bungee cord to the top of a BMW SUV is something you don't see everyday.... The dispatcher advised me to follow the silver BMW from a distance and only call back if the driver exits off or continues along highway 1 before I reach New Westminster. I initially was going to exit off Canada Way but I thought I'd follow him at least to Brunette Ave and call back non-emerge if he continued or exited off Hwy 1. I made a questionable and aggressive exit off of Highway 1 after the silver BMW took the off ramp on to Brunette Ave and proceeded to call back non-emerge. I told the dispatcher that the driver exited onto Brunette Ave and was continuing to turn right on Brunette heading southbound. I was advised by the dispatcher to continue following the silver BMW along Brunette Ave until I saw an unmarked grey Ford F-150 arrive nearby. I remained on the phone with the non-emerge dispatcher until the 18:50 mark when the unmarked unit pulled up alongside me. The dispatcher said the unmarked unit will be pacing the silver BMW from now on and that NWPD has been notified of the driver. I thanked the lady, and went about my day.
I rewatched the dash cam footage later and realized I didn't have any audio recording on at the time. I don't know what ended up happening to the silver BMW driver or why the individual might have been driving like that. It's possible it was a stolen vehicle or perhaps it was just acrazy driver who didn't have his coffee before going to work, I have no clue!
Please let me know what your thoughts are below - Should I have bothered calling it in? Should I have left it alone? What do you think happened to/reasoning for this individual's erratic driving? Is there anything you can share about this incident or a similar experience you had...
Thanks for watching, I hope everyone is having a great day.
