The parting scene between Custer (Erroll Flynn) and his wife (Olivia de Havilland) in "They Died With Their Boots On" is one of the most moving and beautiful in the history of American cinema. Erroll was the most handsome actor I remember and was perfectly suited for all those dashing heroes he portrayed. Thank you for this wonderful video Rob!

Oh! Brilliant! I always loved watching Errol Flynn's movies! Particularly Captain Blood and Robin Hood! And read his book decades ago! Also, an autobiography by an illegitmate daughter of his in the Caribbean. A loyal fan, as you can see and I very much hope that there WILL be a follow-up interview with daughter Rory! Beautiful location you picked too!

Coming from a broken home and with little guidance, I was darned near raised on Errol Flynn movies, I became a saltwater captain, a fencer, and coach and joined the Air Force fully expecting to be a dashing fighter pilot, after all Id watched plenty of Flynn movies and I was halfway trained already. Instead was a mechanic and did put many fighting aircraft in the air for real life heroes. I'd say that Errol Flynn was a helluva fine roll model.

I'm going to start reading like a recursive loop but dang Rob, these interviews and insights are so epic to anyone who loved(s) Westerns and the stars that made them great. This one, like all of your others reveals stories and history that you just won't get elsewhere. For anyone else, go back and watch the older videos, so many legends that are gone now, leave a legacy for us to enjoy and keep. Got a lot more to go yet but at this point I know they'll all be as satisfying. Thank you @A Word on Westerns !

This is wonderful! Thank you, Rory and Bruce! Thank you, AWOW!! Thank you, Rob!!! BTW, the gender-neutral name, Rory. refers to Irish nobility, the color of royalty, red, signifying power and leadership. Francis Timothy McCown, gave himself the name, Rory Calhoun; another Rory is RFK's youngest born shortly after his death.

Adventures often don't feel like adventures unless they're vicarious, or if real until after the fact. Very often they just fall into the category of a tough life. But tough as things got for Flynn in his youth it was much tougher to be a sheep in those days, apparently. Anyway, the irony here is we've all had all manner of adventures thanks to Rory's dad's work, without any of the pain or suffering. Just the thrills, and for that we are indebted and all should be grateful. To you too, Rob, and to Rory, Bruce and the Alabama Hills as well for these great stories and remembrances.

Many thanks, Rob, RJ and Team AWOW, for another interesting program. Rory was delightful. BTW I grew up on Flynn's films, which by the 1960s were regular features on various TV programs, such as The Million Dollar Movie and The Late Show. Flynn absolutely commanded his films through his indomitable presence. Though Basil Rathbone and Tyrone Power were technically better fencers, still no one could wield a sword with such glee as Errol. And I loved him in Kim too. Many thanks again, and the best of health to you all. Happy New Year! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Known for his swashbucklers, Flynn made some pretty good Westerns, too. My one two favorites being "Dodge City" and "Virginia City" (having seen 'em on TV first as a kid, it was years before I discovered that Dodge City was actually filmed in color!), and then "Rocky Mountain", Flynn's last one (I think) filmed ten years later, co-written by Alan Le May author of "The Searchers" which has a great story and is an excellent one too. I don't count "They Died With Their Boots On", which for me, falls into a sub category of Civil War slash cavalry picture "based on real characters and actual events" which, in moon pitcher parlance means almost entirely pure fiction. Which I liked very much as well. Great show with Rory and Bruce in the best possible Western location outside Monument Valley.

Very informative.I worked with Ms. Flynn's older sister Deidre in video post. She mentioned a lot of the same stories about her dad and family life on Mullholland and the time Warner's sent a helicopter that landed, in their pool to pick her dad for a shoot back at the studio.Their parents were very good disicplinarians. The girls always said good night early, to all of the famous guests. Looking forward to read her book.

ERROL FLYNN at LONE PINE... well, the Charge of the Light Brigade certainly took advantage of the desert scenery there, but it was intercut with footage shot at IVERSONS Movie Ranch back in HOLLYWOOD's own back yard. In fact, a lot of Flynn action was shot at the world's most famous ranch for his THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON... but when it came to the wide open spaces and rolling hills they shot again within HOLLYWOOD's own backyard out at Lasky Mesa near Agoura, Ca. The battle of the Little Big Horn scene was shot there, and also two big action scenes for Charge of the Ligh Brigade, the attack on the fort and the actual "charge" of the Light Brigade finale. RORY FLYNN is a delight, but I wish we could have seen her without the shades... her father always said he didn't want to die of old age, and sadly his good looks started their decline in the early 1950's. He was a great icon for sure, and it's certainly a shame he didn't get to see much of Rory growing up. His son Sean from his first marriage must have been an inspiration for Rory having been a freelance still photographer who disappeared whilst on assignment in Cambodia in 1970, covering the Vietnam war. Another good on-location interview, you can't beat that great natural light up at LONE PINE can you Rob! RORY FLYNN, it really is a HOLLYWOOD kind of name...

The action in movies from the Erroll Flynn era was carefully crafted, choreographed and filmed. Even big budget movies today are often so damn sloppy with shaky cam, editing by Hibachi chefs, and deliberately dim lighting. I'm still a kid that enjoys the exciting swashbuckling of yore. Thanks again Rob, for this great interview!
