I heard that Art Blakey was a house PIANO player for a club. One night Erroll Garner came in and sat down and played. That was the night that convinced Art to play drums full time! If Garner didn't read music, he had to have perfect pitch and a photographic memory. Excellent narrative thanks!

When I was but a young boy I would sometimes stay up well past what would be a normal bedtime and watch late night Talk shows like Steve Allen who originated the Tonight Show, or Jack Parr who replaced him there. It was one of those nights that I saw and heard Erroll Garner for the first time sometime in the late 1950's. I was immediately hooked on his style and his charisma. He just had that something that I still can't explain. My mother would allow me to stay up late and watch whenever he was on TV. My mother loved the idea that I was crazy about music at all and even bought me my first Beatles records. But to this day, I still remember seeing Erroll Garner on those late night talk shows and getting hooked on his great talent.

Wow! My mom did the same thing for me! When I tell people how I know about Erroll Garner and other jazz musicians during the 50s, " . . . I love my mama (you only get one).".

Erroll Garner remains my most beloved jazz pianist. 'Concert by the Sea ' is still legendary. It was introduced to me by his older brother/teacher Linton Garner who was also successful and a loved mentor to two generations of musicians in Vancouver B.C., Canada.... God bless them both.

I have been a Garner devotee since the age of 13 (I'm 75 now) and thought that I knew all there is to know about him. But I didn't know this.

Great story. I can see why the big corps wanted to keep it quiet. Peace

Actually it was quite common for classical-music artists in the 1920's, 1930's and 1940's to have approval rights over their own records, but jazz artists weren't granted that same right.

The ability to play jazz by ear, without charts without a written harmonic progression boggles my mind....surely someone called the key centre?!!
