Erroll Louis Garner (born Erroll Louis Garner; June 15, 1921, Pittsburgh, PA - January 2, 1977, Los Angeles, California) - American jazz pianist, ensemble leader, composer. Outstanding innovator and virtuoso of the jazz grand piano, who developed his own unique "orchestral" style (he was called "the man with 40 fingers"). Garner's influence has been experienced by many pianists, including Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, Monty Alexander, Ahmad Jamal, Ellis Larkins, Red Garland, Martial Solyal, Dave Brubeck. Обожаю слушать и смотреть Эрролла!!! Erroll Garner led a bachelor lifestyle and was rather indifferent to the company of women. He had a dog, which he tenderly looked after. His whole personal life is the story of a lone genius, absent-minded, with an unsettled life, capricious.

@@larisadobrorez Thank you for the speedy reaction. The wikipedia page you referred me to is the Russian version on Erroll Garner, which I can't read - does this page (unlike the English one) mention his dog and that he was "rather indifferent to the company of women"? If not, where did you find that? This Erroll Garner epigone whose one great true love has been his dog and who has grown increasingly indifferent to the company of women would very much like to know. Thanking you in advance, yours sincerely Koen

@@YingTou1 About personal life and habits [edit | edit code] Erroll Garner led a bachelor lifestyle and was rather indifferent to the company of women. He had a dog, which he tenderly looked after. His whole personal life is the story of a lone genius, absent-minded, with an unsettled life, capricious. One of his whims: the members of the trio had to always perform in costumes. This embarrassed the musicians, and bassist Eddie Colehoun complained that it was difficult to swing the double bass in a tuxedo. However, it is only natural for Garner to wear awkward outfits. To concerts, he takes with him several suits, shirts, ties, 4-5 towels (he had an amazing ability to wipe his face with his left hand, without stopping playing), several bottles of soft drinks and ... a phone book of Manhattan: not a single cushion for piano chairs suits him better. His performances are always a surprise. He never planned anything. His hands - each one individually - had their own character and could play at different rates. Garner, born neither right-handed nor left-handed, could sign with both hands. At concerts, he never said anything. Garner seated his musicians so that they could see them well and so that they could see him: the bass player on the left (there it is more convenient for him to watch Garner's left hand), and the drummer on the right. If Erroll did a short upward passage at the end of the piece, it’s time for a break. The rhythm group learned about which piece would be played from the long introductory piano solos: the pianist did not like to start the theme straight away.

But, at the risk of sounding ungrateful (I'm not - such an extensive reply to a stranger - very kind, most appreciated), how do you know all these interesting tidbits? Did you read a biography? Love the sound of the recording... every year of every decade has it's own ambience. Modern clarity and technology can easily disperse some of that effervescent authenticity ;) I can understand why this would be one of your favourite, Erroll Garner albums. I'm curious, what is the name of this album ? Does the CD have the same title ?? And, is this "canned applause" (wherever it comes from, it's not from the same place where the trio was recorded, pretty sure of that) also on your album/CD ?? Has the CD been remastered, or is the same as the original recording ? And, it the orginal recording complete with "natural" applause and audience ambence ?? Curious... :))

In New York, the Savoy Records company offers Garner to record records that clearly capture the characteristic style of playing: a slightly lagging rhythm, when the right hand seems to "drag" behind the left, while "touching" adjacent keys along the way. The famous American jazz critic Leonard Feather described his impressions of the musician as follows: "Garner is a 'two-faced Janus' who 'turns abrupt melodies into pearly splashes.' His hands - each individually - had their own character and could play at different rates. Garner, born neither right-handed nor left-handed, could sign with both hands.

Due to his reluctance to learn musical notation, he does not receive a systematic musical education. The music teacher invited by his mother met the boy's stubborn reluctance to get educated. The professor, to whom the mother showed her young nugget, said that Erroll did not need to know the musical notation at all.

Thanks very much kadoguy for posting this. Until I listened to this I hadn't appreciated how much range Erroll Garner had. He has a lot of ideas and pursues them audaciously. The performance seems to be 'the thing', he's never filling or marking time. Very intense. It's not one of those socialised trios, each playing solos. It seems to be Erroll Garner going off, saying 'Hey I'm going here. Keep up!' The audio quality seems pretty good [for something streamed through a computer's small speakers anyway]. Do you know the tunes being played? I don't know enough to be able to identify the tunes and Mr Garner didn't appear to slavishly follow the hummable hook lines. Is it the same set list as the One World Concert in Aug 1962 at The World's Fair, Seattle?

Cada interpretacion es una verdadera creacion. Es un pianista que no sabe musica!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@rafaelbanos49492 жыл бұрын

Hey I'm an Erroll Garner addict too and I specialise in his recordings. Here is a complete list of all the versions of Laura played by Erroll Garner you can listen to on the internet. Laura was a standard that Erroll frequently played on radio and in concerts, however unfortunately the vast majority of Erroll Garner recordings remain in archives. If you were interested in listening to those recordings, I believe they are currently stored in the University of Pittsburgh Archives and the Library of Congress.
