Simon & Jeremy Part 4

From the American drama television series Rise (2018).
A passionate working class high school drama teacher decides to put on a high school version of the musical "Spring Awakening”. Two of the drama club students, Simon Saunders and Jeremy Travers, are cast in roles ("Hanschen" and "Ernst") which involve them sharing a kiss. But as they rehearse the show, Jeremy begins to have feelings for Simon for real.

Tickets go on sale for the show. Interest is minimal until one of the pupils posts a provocative but misleading video about the show on social media. Tech week gets off to a bad start when the stage curtains refuse to open. And the only scene that is going right is the intimate scene between Simon and Jeremy. Annabelle tells Simon that, if she didn’t know otherwise, she would have thought they were a couple. She’s looking forward to picking up where she and Simon left off. Are-they-aren’t they rumours about Simon and Annabelle are circulating the cast and Jeremy discovers that the two of them hooked up at the steel mill when the gang went in search of props for the play. He tackles Simon about it and when Simon confirms that he and Annabelle are dating, Jeremy says he doesn’t want Simon to touch him in their scenes in the play anymore. Simon and Annabelle hook up for sex on the weekend but Simon is unable to go through with it.
Mr Mazzu notices that relations between Simon and Jeremy have significantly cooled and is affecting their scenes in the play. He’s further troubled when Simon’s father tells him that he will do everything possible to stop the play. Simon learns that his parents have signed a petition to shut the play down. His mother tells him that she didn’t personally sign it and she’ll talk to his dad to get to the bottom of it.

“Rise” is inspired by the young adult novel “Drama High” by Michael Sokolove, which focused on the real life of drama teacher, Lou Volpe, of Harry S Truman High School in Levittown, Pennsylvania. Volpe's story follows his accomplishments of bringing a diminished high school drama programme in a blue collar, middle class town to international prominence. The real-life Lou Volpe was gay but was portrayed as straight in the TV show to make him "more relatable" and to enable additional family characters to be introduced.
Spring Awakening is a rock musical, with music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater, first performed in 2006. It is based on the controversial 1891 German stage play of the same name by Frank Wedekind.
On 11th May 2018, NBC cancelled “Rise” after the one season.
