Just days before opening night, Mr Mazzu has to tell the cast that Principal Ward and the School Board have demanded that changes be made to clean up the script, before they will agree to the show going ahead. Most of the cast are accepting of the changes, even though it will affect the parts they are playing. Simon, however, is critical of what he sees as unnecessary censorship, given what he has gone through to keep his place in the show, and he storms off the stage.
What is making him so bitter is that, from the arguments he overheard between his parents, and the heart-to-heart talk he has with his father, it’s clear his parents’ marriage is a sham. It would seem that maybe his father has been concealing his own true sexuality and this, rather than his religious beliefs, may be the real reason behind his opposition to the play. When Jeremy comes to find out what is upsetting him, Simon tells him that, since he started doing this play, he has had feelings which he has found it hard to deny. But if he opened up and came out to his parents it would tear the family apart.
With opening night approaching, Principal Ward demands more scenes be taken out of the play. Mr Mazzu has had enough and tells the cast he doesn’t want them to think that life is all about caving in and compromising. He wants them to go back to the original script, even though it may cost him his job, and everyone agrees. On opening night, when the unabridged play is performed, the audience love the show and are not as shocked as the School Board predicted. As his parents are in the audience, Simon is not sure if he can do the love scene with Jeremy as originally written. Mr Mazzu tells him to do whatever version of the scene he feels comfortable with. So we are left hanging until the bitter end to find out the fate of the will-they-or-won’t-they kiss.

In "Rise", A passionate working class high school drama teacher decides to put on a high school version of the musical "Spring Awakening”. Two of the drama club students, Simon Saunders and Jeremy Travers, are cast in roles ("Hanschen" and "Ernst") which involve them sharing a kiss. But as they rehearse the show, Jeremy begins to have feelings for Simon for real.
“Rise” is inspired by the young adult novel “Drama High” by Michael Sokolove, which focused on the real life of drama teacher, Lou Volpe, of Harry S Truman High School in Levittown, Pennsylvania. Volpe's story follows his accomplishments of bringing a diminished high school drama programme in a blue collar, middle class town to international prominence. The real-life Lou Volpe was gay but was portrayed as straight in the TV show to enable additional family characters to be introduced.
Spring Awakening is a rock musical, with music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater, first performed in 2006. It is based on the controversial 1891 German stage play of the same name by Frank Wedekind.
On 11th May 2018, NBC cancelled “Rise” after the one season as there was no further material to draw on to continue the series.
