I saw the entire anime in sub before dub. And with Erwin being my favorite character, I couldn't believe the amount of emotion I got to invest in his final speech(sub). That was until I heard the dub a few months after and started tearing up. All the other scenes could have gone either way, with the sub having a tiny bit of the upper hand. But the way Tatum delivered his final speech in the dub will go down as one of the greatest anime deliveries of all time.

Honestly, the speech didn't leave that much of an impact when I first watched in sub.. but when I watched Blind Wave's dub reaction to the episode, I had immediate goosebumps and was actually teary-eyed like the crew. Besides emotion, directly recognizing the style of diction and the inflection on certain words is very important in a formal speech.

If this video proves anything, it’s that the whole sub vs dub debate is just stupid, because everyone generally prefers what they saw/heard first because that’s where their emotions are tied and it’s damn near impossible to separate yourself from that to be unbiased. Edit: but even after seeing the show in sub first, that last scene I feel was wayyy better in dub. He was so matter of fact and then built that hype over time, and ending with “RAGE” was so damn good. Overall, I prefer Eren in sub and I prefer Erwin in dub.

I don't think it necessarily proves that a person would choose which ever one they heard first. Like Rana said, last episode she picked more subbed Eren scenes than dubbed Eren scenes. The dub crew has also stated numerous of times how much they hate the dub voices for characters like Historia & Gabi, so I'm sure they'll side with the subbed version of those characters as well. I think it all just depends on who's actually the better voice actor, but in this case it was just a tough choice, because both Erwin VA's are great. Honestly out of all the dubbed VA's, probably only Erwin comes close to the subbed version, or maybe even beats it depending on one's preference. Levi dubbed is good too, but I still prefer the subbed version.

Modern dubs have gotten a lot better, so its not that much of an issue with recent shows. But if we're talking about older shows, woowiee, the dub gang is not taking a dub on those.

Both Michael and Daisuke are powerful voice actors and perfect examples of peak voice acting and Michael is a perfect example how good dub should be. 1st Scene it was very close but its Sub for me 2nd Scene is Dub that "ADVANCE GODDAMMIT" had me in chills doing the salute and everything i was about to buy a horse and join them lol. 3rd scene i would have to go with sub Last Scene: I'm sorry no contest that entire speech was peak for me in dub J Michael Tatum had me in tears and inspired at the same time. I had to rewind the "My Soldiers" part like a million times i just loved it so much in the dub

I prefer dub, people tend to have this bias that sub is original, so it has to be better. I was of the same belief until I switched to dub and couldn't go back. Also, for me, it would have been a disservice to watch it in sub, as I am better able to follow what's happening through different scenes and action. It's just a more immersive experience overall. The dub for AOT is pretty well made - great voice acting, well-written dialogues, and script. I am no expert, and English is not my first language. While I don't understand much Japanese either, so I and most couldn't have better judgment unless they understand both. Also, Japanese dialogues are not necessarily the same as their English translations and lose some nuances. Going by the script and dialogues alone, I mostly prefer dub. I have watched and compared them side by side as I now mostly watch my dubbed anime with Jap-Eng subs on top of each other with a workaround and often find myself preferring one or the other. But usually, dub dialogues are better written but sometimes end up being way off in meaning, tone, or just not as easy to understand, but it can happen to subs too. The rest is up to voices which can be subjective and VA performance, which people consider Japanese to be more pro at especially for anime, but they tend to put on more of an animefied voice to sound extra cutesy, badass, and all, but English VA would sound cringe or unnatural with too much of the same, but it's cool for Japanese, I guess. It also comes down to the OG medium bias for sub, and they probably know better what they're doing. But dub also has an advantage of reference and localization. Both are foreign to me, so I rather pick what I'm able to enjoy more. People generally consider dub subpar to sub, but if dub is good enough, it usually takes the dub for me. As for AOT, the dub is more than good enough, and it's the kind of show that is definitely worth a rewatch, so better watch it in both sub and dub. As for Erwin VA, I prefer Dub, although their overall performance is really close, but I liked the Eng VA; it felt more naturally badass and a better-suited voice (subjective), and with those great dialogues, it really hits hard since I can directly understand with more immersion, but wish I understood Japanese just as well for a better assessment.

The problem with this couch is that the ones who know they are dub bias are trying to be unbiased and are picking sub occasionally. The ones who are sub biased aren’t trying and have yet to pick dub once. Both sub and dub are excellent but this series isn’t going to be very entertaining if it doesn’t at least try to be unbiased.

Erwin’s dub and sub have always been on equal footing for me, but the advance speech and his final speech are so iconic in English; JMT is arguably one of the best voices in the dub.

Michael Tatum as Erwin is a GOAT dub performance. I could go with either but I think I gotta give the edge to the dub here. Tatum's performance for some of Erwin's classic scenes like "I said advance, god damnit!" and of course his speech to the recruits leading to the suicide charge of the Beast Titan gave me legit chills and had me wanting to hop on a horse and charge with him. It's truly a masterful performance across all dubbing.

1. Sub over Dub 2. Dub over Sub 3. Sub over Dub 4. Dub over Sub Over all the more calmer scenes are better for me in sub, but the Dub hits so much better in more screamy dialog. I think it's also partly just because my understanding of English is way better than Japanese so it's way easier to get those emotions from Dub.

I think with Erwin in dub they mix the echo effect well to amplify his voice, because often times in dub, the echo effect can drown out the voice a bit more with how it sounds. But paired with a strong VA performance, it amplies it perfectly for the best effect. Often times in sub they rely on those effects less, which can make me prefer sub when it doesn't sound as good in dub with those effects. So dub Erwin hits harder often yelling too because it's a good combo.

As someone who watched the sub first and dub later (and overall I prefer sub for majority of animes) I cried when I listened to each, but I bawled when I listened to the dub. It's the sub all the way for me (but I grew up learning Japanese, so I won't claim to be unbiased!) Lol. The emotional subtext is always just more natural sounding to me in Japanese. I'm sorry but you can't convince me that the sub bias isn't particularly strong. It's okay to admit the Dub is better on occasion. That look Micky was giving (24:00) when Pat was gassing up those final moments in Erwin's dub speech had me like 'did he stutter?', lol. I remember he was the one talking about how unbiased he would be, and yet the bias is oozing from him the most. Like, Tatum's performance makes me absolutely believe soldiers will follow Erwin to their deaths (see Rana and, in particular, Pat's reaction @22:20). He's a friggin' hype machine on the battlefield. In general, I think Tatum's voice suits the character, both in the quiet and big moments. Just chef's kiss. I'll also say I love the changes to the dialogue in the final speech. Lines like 'assassinate the son of a bitch', 'none of it matters as you lie bleeding out on the battlefield', 'none of it changes what a speeding rock does to a body', and 'my soldiers will not buckle or yield when faced with the cruelty of this world'.

‘Unbiased’ my ass lmao. The dub watchers genuinely try to hear both sides and will judge equally. The sub watchers go silent, confer with their echo chamber then come back to say sub. Even draw moments leans to sub cus they prefer sub as a whole; quite literally contradicting them saying ‘unbiased’. I have no idea what bass they’re even talking about, I thought both were very booming with their voices. Only in the third clip would I agree sub was better than dub by a slight margin. 1st one’s a genuine draw. 2nd and 4th was obvious but apparently something something bass?

I love sub but the last most iconic scene of erwin in dub is just immaculate. I think its because this is a high stress situation and as a non-japanese english speaker, the voice, the emotion and meaning behind those words in english registers more impactfully compared to reading the sub in english while hearing those words in japanese - if that makes sense at all lol. Also the words in english like "buckle" "yield" "cruelty" "rage" have such raw emotional connotation that u can't help but get that sense of "i would give my life if erwin told me to"

Suraj about the part where you said that sometimes you hear them say "Kyojin" but the subtitles doesn't mention "Titan", are you sure it's not mentioned in the NEXT subtitle text? Because Japanese sentences are often reversed compared to English. Someone might say "Eren" at the start but in the subtitles it's at the end etc..

Genuinely both versions are absolutely phenomenal. Like, I don't think it's possible for anyone to hate either version, and if they do, that's some bullshit lmao. Even as a mostly Sub person, I prefer Dub Erwin here. I really think the dialogue translations/changes really put Dub Erwin on top for me. Whoever's behind translations and changing of the Dub did an amazing job and deserves a raise.

When people hate on one version or the other, its not bullshit. They do it because they have an emotional attachment to whatever they watched the show in, so watching scenes in the other doesnt give them the emotional impact they orginally experienced, and that blinds them to the fact that both are amazing preformances. They essentially are disregarding the voice acting even though its the topic of the discussion.

@@FrostBitnthat’s bs bc I watched seasons 1-3 of aot dubbed, this was when i was purely a dub watcher, then I started watching another anime in sub bc the dub was taking too long to come out and I was blown back by how much better it was. So then I went back and rewatched aot in sub and from there I could never watch dub again, accept for dragon ball z lol

A big part of this debate is the cultural aspect, American performances and film and voice acting away more expressive and theatrical and grand, which you could contrast to European acting in voice acting where they are a lot more sombre and monotone like the UK version of Sherlock Holmes with Benedict Cumberbatch versus the US version with Robert Downey Jr. The Japanese voice acting is a lot more sombre and more relatable for the audience in that culture whereas the US dub is appealing to the wester, patriotic audience with more vivid emotional performances

for the last scene here, Dub Erwin is more compassionate, Sub is more stoic, both get just as good at climax for me (dialogue dub). In this particular scene I just feel like bringing compassionate side of that character, hits better

Imo I think it wouldn't be fair to judge by script, since the changes in translation to fit lip flaps come into play. For sure either one is better than the other, but I like to judge based on the merit on performance. Of course that comes with bias, since Japanese isn't my first language, but I feel this way it doesn't downplay either one because of the idea of "the script is better and that's why I think it's better." Both are awesome, but I feel the dub just has even more raw feel to it, and I find it very commanding.

They actually don’t say the same amount of words a lot of Japanese words just love to sound long as shit or be super short yet be a full explanation XD But yeah a lot of the time using same sentence sounds longer so English ends up adding more and more that diluted the script in some instances. Some bad dubs out there that WOULD be fine if it wasn’t bloated with shallow wording to match lips.
