You have to remember that the lip flaps have to match up aswell. Like at the last part, during the Erwin charge. The dub couldn't just say "scream", cause in the animation his mouth opened twice. So that's why they changed it to "scream out", to match the lip flaps. I think if they could just take the dialogue straight from japanese they definitely would if it saves them time lol.

In my opinion, during Erwin's speech, I think it was a good choice that he said "my soldiers rage" instead of "my soldiers fight" because rage has more intense connotations than fight. I don't know the minor implications or feelings to associate with the word 'fight' in Japanese, but in English I think 'rage' is a fiercer, more emotional word and it fits Erwin's character better since it sounds just a tad more intellectual than 'fight.' It's also difficult to make the word sound drawn out compared to 'rage' which has the vowel 'a' and that's much easier to extend without sounding weird.

Definitely I agree. The literary tool used in this was "Anaphora" which connects and emphasises certain words when speaking in english.

“I like the little voice crack tho, I respect it” yes 😂 I can see how switching from sub to dub armin would be really weird. I watched dub first so when I heard the sub I was like “why is Armin a girl???” Lol Thank you for not just bashing on the dub for no good reason and acknowledging when there’s good voice acting. No idea why they didn’t show Levi talking lol, since Matt Mercer did a great job. I think the main reason people dislike dub is they’re just used to the sound of the Japanese actors, so it just sounds “wrong” to hear the dub actors because it sounds like a completely different person. But it’s the same thing going from dub to sub (or from dub to other dub, like Vinland saga lol). I can respect wanting a more accurate translation tho, that’s legit. But I’ve still had a grand old time watching dubs

I'd absolutely love to see you do a video of Yu Yu Hakasho's Sub and Dub. I recently watched the Spanish Dub with my mom (she only speaks Spanish) and, having watched the Dub growing up and the Sub recently I was surprised to see how much closer the dialogue was between the Japanese/Spanish Dub compared the English Dub but it was interesting learning the voice of Kuwabara was the same Voice of Piccolo, Vegeta, and All Might. It was also interesting learning that Togashi once mentioned the Japanese voice actor of Kuwabara was so in tune with his character he felt he knew Kuwabara better than he did.

More people should see this! I've commented somewhere about the differences in subbed and dubbed like this before ^o^ It was based on the 1st episode though, where I have noticed some small differences the dubbed had made in the script when I compared it to the subbed. I also prefer their original voices, and I feel the original suits the characters more and gives more feelings to their words to the scene... Whenever I hear a dub it just reminds me of watching a play in a theatre so it just doesn't do it for me...(No offence to the other VA's though, just my opinion!)

In all honesty i believe mostly people who were born in an English speaking country prefer dub(majority obv) the rest of the world(majority) will prefer the sub version. They were raised having everything dubbed in their language, obviously not saying their dubs is trash, they have instances were they are extremely good, but overall product aint on the same level as the original.

I watched Aot first in Russian, then understand German dub, and they are miles better then English. If you show someone Aot in Russian dub, without showing screen, person wouldn't be able to tell, if this is anime or just some tv series, because people sound like normal people. In English dub majority of characters cartoonishly overreacting and female and kids voices are high pitched and too "girlish'. Even English dubs, that considered good, like Code Grass or Death Note are still worse because of female voices, even if main character sounds nice. The only English dub I watched, that sounded excellent was recent Arcane

I think there are 2 types of people when it comes to watching translations: 1st type want to be fully immersed in Japanese culture and want the translations to be almost word for word (as close as possible to the original without losing meaning in English) because they want to experience the meaning of each words as it sounds in Japanese. 2nd type of people do not care about word-for-word accuracy but want an accurate translation of the meaning. I don't know Japanese so I can't give a specific example, so that's why I'm making one up out of thin air, but imagine if there's a word in Japanese that means "dog" but it's a super degrading insult, so that the equivalent in English would be calling someone a "piece of shxixt". Type 1 person would want the accurate "dog" translation while type 2 would want the one that makes most sense in American English so they would want "piece of shxixt" translation because they don't care about immersing themselves in the culture, they want the translation to accurately reflect the emotion and meaning rather than words. I feel like SUBS should focus on pleasing type 1 person and DUBS should focus on pleasing type 2 person. I watched Attack on Titan in DUB (and then partially sub) and I enjoyed it in dub, but for some reason it still feels like a mix... sometimes the dub sounds better to me, other times the sub does. The dub feels disconnected sometimes. As an example, my favorite scene is the end of s4e6 where the Jaw Titan is flabbergasted that a bunch of humans are about to kill him, a titan and then in dub he says that they're not humans, they're devils. This feels lackluster to me. Devil is not a menacing word in English, people sometimes say devil endearingly, like calling someone a rascal or troublemaker. The sub (at least the version I watched) said "devils of Paradis" which was better because it made "devil" not a generic insult but a name for a group of people, sort of like a gang or something - much more menacing. But at the end of the day, the BEST translation would have been "demons of Paradis" - demon is a menacing name, because it's not a word that's used endearingly, and adding "of Paradis" makes it real and terrifying. I don't speak Japanese and don't know the actual, accurate, word-for-word translation of Japanese in that scene but having watched the show I can tell you what the best translation for type 2 person would be because I understand the context and meaning, and that context and meaning is more important to me as an English speaker rather than an accurate translation - it carries more impact to Americans when, for the lack of a better word, the show is Americanized as much as possible when it's translated.
@yoyoeldas
@yoyoeldas Жыл бұрын
The problem with dub (I think) are that some of the translations are just clunky. You mentioned the Armin speech in 1x10, and how the Japanese original conveyed much more. Another instance in this video was Bertholdt's plea in 2x11--The dub version had him say "What do you think I am? HUH? WHAT?!!" and "Do you understand?!!" which sound very accusatory, as if the scouts were the ones that should understand his plight, and that ruins the moment for me. He's supposed to be pleading to them, knowing full well that their friends were in every way right to accuse him, not the other way round. The dub also omits the mentions of "Connie! Jean!" which I also don't really like, since in the original he was responding specifically to these two friends' questions. This happens quite a few times in the dubbed version of AoT, with some "Do you hear me"s and "Huh" being added in weird places that makes the whole speech awkward. I'm not saying the sub translation has the best flow. I mean I don't think flow is the priority for subtitles; accuracy is. But it doesn't matter with sub because you're reading to get the meaning, and listening to the voice acting to get the emotion. For dub it is all in one package, so when the emotion is there but the words sound off then it really sticks out like a sore thumb. That is why for AoT in particular I prefer sub over dub. (Disclaimer: Some of the dub translation is still good. Almost all the Levi and Erwin lines are elite translation, elite voice acting and you should definitely check them out.)
@Outrunwhistle
@Outrunwhistle 20 күн бұрын
My rule of thumb for dub is: “If the emotional acting doesn’t smash it out of the fvcking park, sub is superior”. For the scenes that make me want to cry, you can’t beat sub. Don’t even try. For everything else, I find it much easier to emotionally connect with my native language (English).

When a dub exists i generally prefer dubbed. Hearing my native language combined with the music and scene hitse harder most of the time. Scenes have made cry in dubbed but not at all in subbed. And then sometimes there's dubs which insert real life politics that make no sense. Dragon maid inserting lines about gamer gate or feminist garbage. Or key characters sound awful but the rest of the dubbed voices I prefer. (Fairy tale happy and natsu dubbed sucks rest of the cast I prefer dubbed)

During the Grisha comparison it doesn't make any sense when he says he is going to give Eren an injection to make him forget. 😂 The original only mentions that it will damage his memory, which is far more accurate. I think this is a major issue, when a series has major twists the exact wording is very important. At the time they were dubbing Season 1, I don't believe they knew about the spinal fluid?

I normally watch sub or dub based off the VAs everyone has preferences so I don’t think you should just straight outright “dub/sun is better 100% no matter what you say.” Without at least taking a chance to actually listen to it without already making up your mind. I prefer AoT in Dub bc I watched the 1st season in dub so changing to sub sounded weird and I just enjoyed it more. GoblinSlayer I like in dub bc Yūichirō does good at being that monotone stoic goblin slayer but Brad is stoic but sounds more intense and especially towards goblins which he hates with a passion and I can hear it in dub. Naruto definitely in sub, dub does really well, but sub matches the tone more then dub does. One punch man sub. I like the style of the anime and the Japanese VA cast definitely fits it.

I mean this with upmost respect, but I find a lot of your issues with the dub seem to stem from your misunderstanding of English as a non native speaker. Comparing English to keigo when English has no such counterpart is unfair, saying armin wasn’t talking militaristically and not as grammatically composed when compared to Japanese, shows an obvious disparity in reasoning considering English would not be structured like that. I know it’s easy to see Japanese as better with a lot of anime but a lot goes in to deciding what version sounds better to someone, it’s hard to reduce it to numbers. Like consider the setting, it was one of the first anime I ever saw where everyone had names like “Eren Yeager” or “Erwin smith” very Germanic names and a Germanic setting. English is a Germanic language. When I see someone like Armin I don’t imagine a Japanese woman’s voice, I imagine that an awkward white kid, something the actor probably was once in their life. The thing is, I still recognize Karina Inoue gave a great performance even though it doesn’t do it for me. It’s different, but there’s nothing about it to mock. I’m just saying man, have a bit more respect and perspective for all the hard work that goes into making something that may not be for your ears.

armins dub voice sounds too old. hes a kid so it makes sense that his voice is pitched higher. if he was 5 years older it would make more sense. i think the difficulty is translating cultural and linguistic differences. for example, the way that people refer to others in japanese doesnt get translated over into an english setting bc we dont have name titles like japanese does. formalities/honorifics dont translate over either. i feel like those really add to the relationship dynamics of characters esp. considering that the japanese is the original source material so they take it into account when creating it. sometimes dubs will omit things that dont make sense to omit because of this. sidenote i used to make the joke that 4kids is actually 4americankids because of how often they censored things. americans are rly the ones that complain about sub because we're anglophiles who think english is the only language worth knowing. aot dub is actually pretty good for a shonen dub though. i wouldnt have thought.
