I come back to this performance often. Erykah is literally an embodied corpus of aesthetic knowledge and black music: funk, jazz, soul, blues, hip hop, etc (all of which emanate from the same form of sacred expression). The categories of creative, cultural worker, theorist, vocalist/musician, and storyteller converge at her art. She knows no bounds. Blessed be Queen Badu.

Each musical movement represents a stage of denial/bartering/acceptance/moving on in a healthy way. Lyrically and musically, the whole song shows the stages of grief of mourning a relationship that is done but you can't bear to let go of. It's brilliant.

"Green Eyes" still makes me feel a dull but persistent ache in the lower chambers of my heart. When it originally released I had just suffered my first heartbreak. Demons do that. Especially since she drinks Adrenochrome, which is babies blood. Soon all will know that satan has a strong hold on people who sold their souls.
