ok HERE’S MY INTERPRETATION. basically, feather heartache is a song meant for kaoru. we all know that, yeah? why though? the lyrics clearly show something about love. now love can be romantic, platonic, familial, etc. from kaoru, it’s any kind of love. remember his mother, the mother he loved so much who is now dead. he enjoyed her affection. he felt loved, he loved his mom back. he didn’t know how to show it back however. surely, him being alive and smiling would suffice for kaoru’s mother. back to the point, now that she is deceased-kaoru regrets everything he didn’t say or do. he owes his mother so much he feels, he longs for her kindness. we can assume that she was a lovely mother figure-a mother who loved her child, a mother who deeply cared for her child, a mother who would do anything for her child. she was that kind of mother. kaoru now, we first see him as a flirtatious being-ladie’s man. if you read kaoru based event stories, you find out that kaoru isn’t really the person you see him to be. he looks and acts mentally not okay when he is by himself. proof of that is in es! (ensemble stars basic) stories, implication of that can be in the most recent kaoru based event. for example, in surfing ocean, when he looks out into the sea, he reminisces about his mother reading him a story and himself as a child promising his mom that he will show her a mermaid. unfortunately, he could never do that now, could he? he only just had the view engraved in his brain. he honored his promise to his mother he could never fulfill. he never let himself cry in front of others (but kanata since he reminded him of his mother in a way-the way kanata praised him by calling him a good boy, assuming kaoru’s mother used to also do the same). more proof is in the bridal story and in gunmen of the wilderness story. later on in the bridal story, he attempts to try to get into a mindset of a girl’s for a bridal shoot-assuming he knows how to satisfy a girl yet he gotten harsh criticism from izumi saying it wasn’t performed well. he asked for a break and then went to the seaside and cried, as the sea makes him feel at ease and do whatever. he vented and let his feeling go haywire, saying he doesn’t know the way to a girl’s heart, though that’s not the reason why. it’s because his sister is having an omiai (arranged marriage) and he didn’t know what that was. he just wished for his sister to be happy. more talk about him and his sister is in gunmen of the wilderness story. to summarize it, before prologue, kaoru was crying in one of the classrooms because he upset his sister and he took in all of the guilt and blamed it on himself. he confessed to anzu that he didn’t know how marriages worked but as long as they were both happy he’s alright with it. he didn’t get why his sister responded with, “kaoru, i-i’m sorry for taking up your time…” (or along the lines of that), since he never knew much about that topic. i know i just did a kaoru loredump rn but basically, feather heartache explains how kaoru longs for affection, longs for love, longs for care, because he is deprived of it. his loving, caring, doting mother is now gone, and he is left with a father who he has a bad relationship with. he feels lonely, empty even. he’s not flirtatious because he wants to, he’s flirtatious BECAUSE he wants the feeling of being loved, the feeling of being cared for. he doesn’t know HOW to earn that, as he was just a young boy when he recieved lovely treatment from his mother. he’s been surrounded with seriousness all his life after his mother’s passing, he was exposed to reality so young. which is why, he is never serious when in public. it explained his persona back then in high school. he matured once he graduated, still being slightly the same though except more respectful in some ways (as he apologized to souma for saying insensitive + most likely racist things to adonis and he won’t dare to say those harmful things again). kaoru is alone, well, he feels alone. he only feels at ease when at the beach. why? it reminds him of his mom, of course. he’s a momma’s boy. this song isn’t just about his mom, it’s about him craving for love and affection, and doesn’t know how to earn it or reciprocate it in a simple way possible so he reaches to such lengths such as being a ladie’s man just to get attention. note: forgot to add this but this is not an excuse to say that kaoru is not racist. you should NEVER pity someone for being racist just because of their trauma. he shouldn’t have said insensitive things to adonis so he could keep his persona up, it’s very stupid and there are other ways to hide his actual personality, racism is not the way to go though. yes, he apologized but it doesn’t change what he did !! okay bye i just wanted to come back and add this is all
