More than 300 serious waste fires occur across the United Kingdom each year and these destroy vital infrastructure, damage the environment and put lives at risk.
These fires are caused by people putting flammable or explosive items in their bin instead of using correct disposal containers which are most often found at local Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Items most commonly associated with waste fires include batteries, liquid fuel, compressed gas canisters, vape devices, barbecue ashes and cigarette lighters.
The Environmental Services Association has launched (June 2023) a communications campaign to raise awareness of the dangers, and encourages organisations such as local authorities, fire and rescue services and those involved in recycling and waste management to download and share the material for free from www.esauk.org
