In spite of the quieter nature of this video, compared to what you’ve done in the past, this video came across as much more down-to-earth and strongly connected to the place you were riding through. It really made me feel I was there with you, struggling through the heat. By the time I heard you talk about the evening meeting with the two Oregonians, I was genuinely happy for the relief it brought you. Sometimes this is what long bicycle rides are like!

That's one of the big reasons I love your content, you show the good and the bad. Not every trip is sunshine and rainbows. The emotional toll the hard moments take can be just as crippling as rolling an ankle. But your perseverance, getting up each day and tackling what the trail has in store is what makes it all worth while in the end. Personally, I'm coming off a knee injury that still hasn't fully healed but just needed to get out there, so this morning I threw a few liters of water in the pack and headed to a local mountain, 5 miles of brutal climbing up the trail to the top in 85 degree heat was so punishing and had me doubting myself so many times. However, I took it slow and steady, rested when I needed, stayed hydrated and finally.. the summit. The most epic view of the valley and lakes melted all the toil of the hike away. The failures and setbacks just inspire you to push on to greater things and reaching that mountaintop, or the end of that 2000 mile thru hike, that's what fires us up to do more. Just know that even your setbacks still inspire me to get out and push my own limits. Cheers.

The sad truth of western watersheds is revealed in your video. My wife and I have spent several winters in the western US dispersed camping and hiking and have been amazed/depressed at how poor water use and drought has depleted reservoirs out there.
@Mike-vd2qt3 жыл бұрын
Population explosion in the Southwest led to increased water use, I agree with you, the climate has changed also. I've lived in the southwest 41 years. It is hotter and drier, earlier and later in the season. May temps in my local desert have already touched 100 deg f. Even in the suburbs 15 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, end of April, we hit 94 deg f two days. The ocean temp in SoCal is 5 deg warmer by July than it used to be.

Thank you for posting this. All of Utah is under the level 4 drought conditions, and has been for a while. The scary question I think about is just how bad it could get. Ie - 100 year, 500 year historical levels....? The Anasazi and Mogollon peoples didn't just disappear for no reason...
@russelljackman14133 жыл бұрын
While I was at the Bullfrog Marina last week, I learned that the lake level of Lake Powell is only 1/3 of "Full Pool!" Also, they are letting out twice as much water as the inflow. The main boat ramp is closed, the water being 100's of feet beyond the cement ramp, and as of Monday (5/17) they have stopped allowing houseboats to be launched at the North Ramp, so unless they slow down the outflow, we are shot down for the year. I was sure hoping you could have gone for a dip while you were there, Darwin! Thanks for taking us with you! You got some beautiful footage!

I did a bike packing trip in outback Australia when I was 20....my first such trip, and all just based on my backpacking and biking experience. I had one particulary rough day kinda like you described--windy, tough route. I thought I was going to run out of water...so I picked up a partially-filled 2L soda bottle I saw on the side of the road. There was no label any more, and the fluid was vaguely brown. I carried it for several hours on the chance that I might need it. Fortunately someone else came by in their car and stopped along side me and gave me some water, which got me to the next available water. But I'll never forget that nasty bottle I carried "just in case"!

Hey Darwin, excellent video and nice to see you do some bikepacking again! We feel your pain with the heat and no water situation as we just got back from that area. My wife and I attempted the Stone House Lands Loop while you were on the Escalante loop and had to bail due to water. We started with a total of 16L and felt that we would not make our water cache at our current pace, totally underestimated the heat and rough terrain. We had planned on riding the Escalante loop after the Stone House Loop and at the last minute we bailed due to water concerns. After watching your video so glad we bailed on that loop as we were relying on Lake Powell, crazy how low that water is there! We ended up doing the Cathedral Valley loop instead and it was awesome and got to see some of the Stone House Loop we bailed on. We also rode the Cedar Mesa Loop which had stunning views and a nice side hike to the Moon house. I recommend that ride if you are back in the area and is pretty easy to cache water on. Ride on!

Yeah, Lake Powell annually is at it's lowest point this time of year. It's very cyclical. It typically bounces back in the summer once all of the snow melt runs off from the Rocky Mountains via the Colorado & Green Rivers, although lake levels will vary year to year. The west slope of the Colorado Rockies got decent snow this year (not sure what others are talking about) so Lake Powell's rise this year should be decent as well. Fall might be a better time to make this journey if relying on Lake Powell as a water and swimming source. Enjoying your videos. I've been laid up this winter/spring with a back injury so I'm living vicariously through you. Thanks for posting, although that looked brutal!
