If you have this kind of time machine AND the past is both possible to visit and impossible to change they can just evacuate to the distant past Although that would trap them in Fox's series Terra Nova so...

I would also say the screenplay was more than a shade prophetic.

I think this is generally a projection from me, but I found the ending "tragically hopeful", in that the personal tragedy of Willis character ultimately contributes to a gradual improvement in the future. Not a full change, but enough to reduce the time of darkness... a little bit like Foundation by Asimov. And I mean ultimately the tragedy and his attempts to fight back the inevitable is what makes the romance (however fairytale it is) and his desire to live seem so beautiful to me. The joy he felt however short & delusional was worthwhile, as the alternative was just nothing ever happening in his life.

One line in the film that could lend to James merely being mentally divergent himself is when he goes to the party to confront Jeffrey. Jeffrey tells security his name is Archie, but when they are holding James back as he becomes erratic the security team calls him Mr. Coal

I love this movie so much! I keep it on my phone. No depending on streaming services. I keep it on my phone so I can watch it every time I have downtime. Best crazy Pitt performance ever imo. Fantastic time travel story. Bleak view of the judicial system and obvious indentured slavery of prisoners. Very smart movie.

Adam’s bit would have gotten old quick in less talented hands, but it just kept getting funnier! The switch-up from general miscommunication/ misdirection on what movie was watched to actively trying to pretend that he definitely knew what was going on was beautiful 😂 A lot of SNL sketches for instance have good initial premises but they just beat the joke to death and they never have a satisfying ending to the sketch. But Adam kept innovating and kept the joke fresh as the episode went on. By the end I’m nodding my head like “yeah you know what? 12 monkeys really is up there with 12 angry men and noir films” 😂😂

I absolutely love 12 Monkeys, especially the performances that Gilliam dragged out of Willis and Pitt (and Morse)!.

When I was a little kid I thought that 12 Monkeys and the video game Apocalypse were the same IP because both featured Bruce Willis...
