It's because American parents and culture bombard children with the message that leaving your parents is proof of adulthood and that attachment to parents is a sign of a loser. It's not the same in more traditional cultures, for example in continental Europe, where Sunday dinner with parents and extended family is a deeply entrenched part of the culture, as well as grandparents helping to care for grandchildren on a daily basis. The idea of not taking care of your parents personally is bizarre in many cultures.

The schoolhouse was ridiculously overpriced, no real garden, no garage, 1 nice bedroom, the others poky, neighbours right on top of you. Who would spend so much to live like that? Renting a garage in the village isn't practical for them as they get older and no visitor parking either. The coachhouse had character but also no garden, just a cobbled courtyard. It is not what you envisage when you imagine moving to the countryside and it has a staircase that wouldn't be particularly safe for them as they get older or for young grandchildren.

The windows in house #3 were very small and I would think in the cold, wet, dark winter months that would be a BIG factor. The living room was a nightmare with nothing but featureless walls and a tiny window. Kitchen was so bad he just rushed them right through it. I kept wondering what the husband was thinking. He kept saying it (the house) had wow factor. I simply did not see it. All I saw was plenty of parking. Number 2 had the best views, but virtually no place for their two cars plus company. I'm not sure how they will manage that. The best overall with all the "boxes ticked" was #1. Because it was newer, it probably would have fewer problems looming beneath the surface. To each his own.
