My key takeaway from this talk: Fulfillment -> achieving greatness in a specific area that has utility for others. You reach fulfillment and greatness by overcoming hardship, obstacle, suffering and doing the hard work (same principles as in weightlifting). That’s the only way to grow. It’s all brain chemistry. Understand the chemistry that is going on in your brain, and hack it to move closer to your goal. Adapt only beliefs systems that move your closer to your goals.

Well that was an hour well spent! I find it interesting that Tom says his path is not to have kids, but then he has built up a structure that makes him the father figure of thousands. As a father of five, I can tell you that there is no real difference because in the end you are nurturing minds either way. It really helps if some of us make the sacrifices required to create new humans, but that does not mean that others can't be just as nurturing to other humans, the end result is still humanity's gain if you really do make a lasting difference to people's lives.

Hey Tom, I had heard this talk quite sometime ago. Today, as I am reading The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks, it occurred to me that what you refer to Matrix is in fact a combination of Upper Limit Problems as defined by Gay in his book. I would love for you to check out Gay's work and maybe those insights would be powerful in conjunction with yours, for your audience. Much love and Stay safe! Cheers Neelesh

Can somebody explain to me why telling yourself that everything is your fault is useful? I get the importance of admitting your mistakes and asking "what could i do better next time?", but there are situations where you didn't do anything wrong, hence there is nothing to correct for the future.
@Ahenian
@Ahenian 4 жыл бұрын
This answer is coming in one year late but here it goes: Mistakes are straightforward, just as you said, but saying everything is your fault allows you to also analyze what you could have done differently or could you have done more in a situation. Regardless of the situation and outside forces at play, you can take these into consideration and make the best of it, instead of the typical excuse of "I did nothing wrong and everything went tits up due to X and Y outside factors". Yes, you did nothing wrong and nobody is blaming you, but you could have affected the situation positively by taking more ownership. Saying "everything is your fault" is neat way of compressing all of this into one simple sentence, it also implies you have control of your own fate (because your behavior/decisions results in everything that is your fault) and you can positively affect it by putting in effort. This might work easier with examples: I'm fat, guess what, my fault. Watch your diet/exercise. I don't have a job/income, guess what, my fault. Apply for a job, go hustle. No friends, guess what, my fault. Go outside, talk with people, start a new social hobby. No promotion, guess what, my fault. Grow, develop, generate value, come up with a plan. You're basically taking control of your life and stop being a victim of your circumstances.

Inspirational thoughts are: - we can change, neuroplasticity - fear is in the way of action, thoughg, creativity, charm and more - the cause is biology, fight or flight, ancient styles of survival, that is the matrix, it reconstructs inaccurately and weak - focus can strengthen/accelerate/enhance the process - we can get control the subconscious and autonomic, directly or indirectly, that is yoga etc - frame work happiness is long deep kind of happinesses - all kinds of information is available these days, just organize and get clear about real you long or short term will and need - greatness/potential is not so scarce persee, its more determined about cultivation - circumstances can make you go off/delay from the course of progress, but is more determined by your inner factors/intentions - sometimes a specific lie can make perform better that a probable truth

Anything offensive has a layer of truth to it. I believe that the quote "Those who can do and those who can not teach." is a perfect example of having a fixed mindset and that it does not undermine teachers but rather the belief systems that most people adopt.
@NeilHighley
@NeilHighley 6 жыл бұрын
What a silly thing to say, its plainly an insult. You can dress it with all the flowery NLP nonsense you like. And to say offensive things are at some level true is utterly abhorrent.
@Jonnymac17
@Jonnymac17 6 жыл бұрын
They are not his words. It was not mean to be an insult in the context he used. Any time anyone has taken offence to anything they should define that emotional response and not take things too literally then find "truth" in that. I should mention that is how I interpret "Anything offensive has a layer of truth to it." I challenge your belief because perhaps this might be an opportunity to learn and grow from and it could actually impact you. This is just how I feel thanks for reading and replying. The most powerful thing I have learned is that Justifying is not understanding.

It's was more self deprecating than insulting. It wasn't meant to be all inclusive, meaning those who can, can also teach as well. If you follow Tom, then he is not an elitist by any stretch. I filtered that comment through that lens. Also, it was a throw-away comment; there were so many in depth nuggets that, that "saying" got dismissed. Surely that wasn't your first time hearing that common phrase.

Well, I couldn't find a single original, new thought in the whole talk, nor a comprehensive approach anyone could follow - it could all be summed up by a range of trite phrases which we've surely all heard from many sources. Maybe I'm old enough to have read all the people who've said the same things many times before. Quite feelgood though, so if you've got an hour you really have to fill, go for it.

I felt that he regurgitated a lot of what is taught in college and tried to encompass all of it into one discussion, even if it conflicted. When he said something to the effect of 'if you are going to get all upset over the words I used to express this then it just tells me where you are at in your development' I was disappointed. Choosing ones words carefully to express exactly what you mean and not offend but include others is the whole point of communication. Google Talks. Talking. Isn't that intended to communicate? Hopefully with accuracy. When he brought up 'hope' along with the rest of his remarks , it just made me think of the many times people are duped into hoping for something better when false hope is being sold.
