Losing Moldova is devastating for the Contest bc they always bring so much heart. What they lack in funds they more than make up for in musical uniqueness and the willingness to showcase their culture, whatever style that is, in a moment that is basically their only chance to announce themselves on an international stage. Countries with far more robust broadcasters have withdrawn citing “financial concerns”, but Moldova’s always been so determined to make it work. Yes, they’ll definitely be back, but this year was supposed to be their 20th anniversary year at Eurovision, a fact that fans of Zdob si Zdub will already be aware of. Btw I do think Semafoare would’ve qualified for the final if Italy had been voting in their SF - it’s so Sanremo he might as well say “Michelangelooo” over the intro 😂

I'm pretty sure every song that gets submitted to Etapa Nationala ends up performing in the audition, so they have about... 30 total submissions? It's pretty remarkable that they've made it work up until now.

Reminds me of Finland in 2018. We were going to have a NF so bad in 2018 our broadcaster had to let people down and choose the artist internally, Saara Aalto, who had just become famous outside the Eurofandom in X Factor UK. Moldova should've done that instead, send a famous Moldovan star with a good song... wait, too late. Should've just cancelled the Final and chosen Semafoare internally.

For what it’s worth, there were variations of this in 1978 (for Germany), 1991 (for Norway), and 1995 (for Russia), albeit none with the fatal outcome of Moldova this year: - Germany’s 1978 selection was supposed to be decided by 50% jury and 50% audience vote. However, the jury apparently was so displeased with the competing entries that they refused to vote and said Germany would be better off withdrawing. Rather than listen to them, Germany left the final decision solely to the public, whose choice - “Feuer” by Eurovision vet Ireen Sheer - wound up finishing in the top ten. So shows what that jury knew! - In both 1991 and 1995, the respective countries turned to internal selections instead of national finals because they thought the submitted songs weren’t good enough to field for a NF. Trouble is, Russia’s jury decided this AFTER their national final (or during, depending on where you look) and picked that jerk Kirkorov instead with a song that actually had come out ten years prior in Romanian, whoops.

One Russian outlet even realised an article with a title "Filipp Kirkorov is gonna represent Moldova on Eurovision" or something like that. And even tho I love and respect Serhii Prytula as an excellent host, when he was commenting the semi final 2021 on Ukrainian TV, I wanted to morally punch him in the face. He constantly mentioned Kirkorov (he at that time already has been a supporter of Putin), talked about him almost every time the camera would show our delegation even tho he wasn't the one representing Moldova and actually wanted everyone to focus on him. Prytula mentioned Natalia only a couple of times but you needed to focus to notice it. I lived in Ukraine during the pandemic so I was watching it live and I was furious since a) he was giving Kirkorov what he wanted and b) I knew that it would decrease chances that Ukrainians will vote for us. Fortunately, I was not the only one to notice that. Prytula mentioned that the organisers actually gave him a warning since the commenters are not allowed to purposely influence the decisions of the voters. So yeah)))

Hey Gabe!! Romanian Eurovision fan here ✌️✨ I wanted to explain what kookoo means (I know it must have been painful to look it up lol). So kookoo is how they chose to write the word cucu, which is another way Romanians and Moldovans say Cuc. Cuc is one of the birds found in our territories, in English it's translated to Cuckoos. It's kinda an emblematic bird, lots of our old folk songs mention it. Aaaaaand yeah, it's also a word that we use in our language to describe genitalia, but male's genitalia. 😅 Tbh I'm super sad Moldova had such a bad selection this year and they withdrew. As a long time eurovision fan and Romanian, I was very much looking forward to what our brothers will send. Your videos are awesome, tysm for your content!! ✨

Besides Tudor, as we all of course, I really got sad for Bacho, he is a young artist that had a mid-good song that could go quite right at Eurovision with a good performance and staging (like top 15th I would guess) and he couldn't. 3:00 to be fair, noise music is really underrepresented in the ESC. we have some great acts with industrial/experimental influences (Hatari, Fusedmarc, Sistem, Bambi Thug, Margaret Berger, Conan Osiris, Aminata, Lord of the Lost, Dihaj, etc.), but there is no pure harsh noise or power electronics entries, which is a huge shame. it's almost like eurovision is not really about musical diversity.

Maybe I'm delusional, but I genuinely believe that "Semafoare" could achieve respectable results in Eurovision, if they were allowed to go. The song is really good, there is staging potential there, and the singer is a great dancer, on top of that. I feel like it could stand out, because it creates a very strange and dark atmosphere, but still makes you wanna move. I'm just sad that an entry like that was "wasted' on the edition when they withdrew, so it cannot ever compete again. Also, justice for Moldova 2015. People just hate fun.

NRK ditched Norway's MGP in 1991 because the submitted entries were so poor. A commercial channel shortlisted eight of them to take part in an alternative MGP and yes, they were all a bit grim. From memory, I think the winner was a song called 'Ett Liv' by Heidi Halvorsen. Greece also ditched its NF in 1984 and withdrew. I wonder what little nuggets of joy we missed?

Moldova has a very special place in my heart since my mom got to know Eurovision when we lived in Chisinau in 2003. Then around 2015 I started taking an interest in Eurovision and I have always supported Moldova even in the songs that haven't been my favorites but I can't say it's all been bad. Hey mama, the lucky one, soarele si luna, it genuinely has been fun seeing them and it's always been so different what they bring to the table. It's just sad that it has to come to this but hopefully in the future there'll be a return and a change when it comes to their way of selecting the artist that will represent them. EVERY country should follow Moldovas example and withdraw from the contest if they cant pull up a decent song worthy for an international stage! It's not about having a high number of participating countries but about the quality of the music contributing to a positive outlook on the contest! Every year we should sit back with the feeling "there's not enough spots for all quality entries in the final", but sadly since the removal of the juries from the semis we have seen a trend of the finals getting more flooded with freakshows and novelty atcs

Babe, I enjoyed the video lots but I have to disagree that Semafoare is only decent. For me, it is bloody amazing. I'm quaking that they didn't allow them to go directly after the decision not to continue with the national final. Bacho is wonderful when it comes to singing and dancing for my liking, camera absolutely loves him. This was only an audition and he has already showed he can perform and later on he said that they had full staging planned. Now we will never see it 🥺 I see that this audition format is quite chaotic but that is what I love about it. It's very authentic and gives a chance to everyone...

This video is kind of forgetting the two other songs that were objectively somewhat good: Katy Rain's "Timpul" and Royals ST's "Zboara-n Sus". Although It's obviously on everyone's taste to choose if they were good or not, the production was objectively better and there was clearly a professional work behind them. Of course there was room for improvement (and that was needed) but that's also true for basically every Moldovan entry that looked very unpolished in a bad staged NF and then qualified for the final at the ESC.

If you watch worldvishawn there’s an explaination to why they withdrew- the singers weren’t rich enough to get props and staging and all the other artists who competed for Moldova, they had enough for they’re props and staging meaning if they can’t get the artists to buy stuff for they’re entries, they won’t go at all. Hi Gabe! 😊 I just read an article online about Turkey wanting to complain to the EBU, about Greece' song this year. Apparently,Turkey is reviewing the song lyrics to see if it slanders Turkey in any way because the song is also about the death, maybe massacres of the Pontian Greeks during WW1. Greece remembers this day in May annually as the Greek Genocide. Of course Turkey rejects this as she also denies the Armenian Genocide. Klavdia is Pontian & the song is also about her ancestors' history of struggle in this region of the Black Sea Greeks. Have you heard anything about this? I think the reason a lot of us do not like Moldova 2015 is because it was only there because Ukraine wasn’t there and he had the money to rig the NF very publicly.

Heads up, nothing in the title or thumbnail indicates this is a national final from this year. I wasn't planning to watch when i saw it in subs but it started auto playing and i get it now. If title/thumbnail said it was about this year i would have definitely made sure to watch

I went look for that tiny clip at 1:46 .... how could anyone not like that (Eduard Romanyuta - I Want Your Love - Moldova 2015)?! First time of hearing, as I never used to watch the Semi-Finals prior to 2023. _Extremely_ Eurovisiony! It's a mystery to me why it didn't qualify past the SFs. Sounded like a left side of the GF scoreboard song to me and the presentation was pretty darn slick, too. 🤷‍♀
