Same it's such a strange feeling because every year I'm so sad when it's over and start counting down the days until Eurovision season starts up again. This year caused me so much secondhand stress that when it was over and Nemo won I felt so much relief but left with this hangover (which didn't come from alcohol but the show itself)

I'm 99.99% sure that Rai revealing the televote results was NOT a mistake. it's hard to explain, but basically, the graphic that was used to reveal the SF2 televoting results was one that had NEVER been used in the past to reveal televoting results (and it wasn't ever used again, not even in the final). in fact, it was in the same style as the other generic "lower-third" banner type graphics used, for example, in the credits at the start of the show. it's very plausible to think that a very brave Rai employee must have put this graphic together in a couple of minutes and """""accidentally""""" displayed it at the end of the show. Rai obviously came out and said that the graphic displayed "incomplete data", but we still "gave" our 12 televoting points to Israel, so they still probably lead the televote results by a massive margin.

This year's theme, 'UNITED BY MUSIC,' seemed irrelevant, and with tensions running so HIGH, I was expecting to see punches flying around. I'm so sad for the whole thing. @@Adam-zw5sqBecause having as a general sponsor a company from one of the participating countries means conflict of interest. Being bound by a 5 year contract with that company means having to mind what they dictate or at least do what they expect. If that company is from Israel - which Moroccanoil is - the equation is writing itself. EBUs hands were tied this year due to their own stupidity to walk into this contract in 2020, that's why they couldn't suspend Israel from participating this year. The consequences are here and Mr Ö has some leaving to do, and the EBU management needs to reform the rules and never again have a general sponsor (at least not from any participating country), but many small ones from different countries.

Honestly same, didn't think I'd write a way longer comment under yours, but here we go. I've never felt so stressed mentally and physically after watching Esc from home and I've done it for 14 years. I was generally happy tuesday to thursday and once all the drama came to light and everything happened I couldn't stop scrolling socials for updates or focus on my life outside the bubble. I cried at one point and overthought a lot for the affected contestants and was in moral shock of Israel actually doing very well with the voting. That feeling ended up affecting other things in my life as well and my general well being. In Malmö it must've been HORRIFYING. I'm just relieved Nemo won and huge respect for all the artists who all managed to put on great performances despite the havoc and lifted my mood up even just a little bit in the final. If this also happened to anyone else, remember to take extra good care of yourselves in the time moving forward, take a deep breath, give yourself a hug and enjoy the summertime.

I know the feeling. It was a relief in the end that I didn't have a party - cos various friends were busy elsewhere, it was just me and my bf. Right up to the show, I wasn't sure it'd be on, and I was rooting for Ireland, so if they hadn't turned up, I'd have switched off there. And I'd been having a rough month, so the Eurovision S***show Contest was not the experience I was looking forward to as a relief from the pressure. Much like Silvester Belt, I wished it had ended on Tuesday. And I also felt a sadness thinking that if it was actually held in Israel, I'd have to find a new hobby for 2025. And I've been watching since I was a 90s kid, so that'd be quite a task.

Completely agree. Tuesday I enjoyed the first semi. Thursday I struggled even getting through the secon semi. I just felt this heavy negative energy weighing me down. Eurovision has been one of my biggest interests for years, and the fact that I was *not* enjoying it just made me even more sad. Then there was a shitshow going on with the NL situation and more. If not for the fact that I visited my partners who also wanted to watch it with me I might not even have bothered watching the final, it was that exhausting mentally. I'm so glad ESC is over for this year, and unless a lot change I don't know if I can keep watching it. Right now there's no part of me that wants to watch ESC itself. I am too pissed at EBU and exhausted by the drama that went down. But at the same time sad, for not being able to find joy in what I usually love.

@@DylanNes the EBU here refers to Russia’s lack of democracy in the sense of free public service media. That is the basis for its exclusion. In my opinion, there is exactly one course of action that EBU can do now to keep the Netherlands in the context and more generally to wash itself from all this dirt: 1) Fire Martin Österdahl and everyone else who had anything to say in this year's catastrophic EBU performance. 2) Publicly apologize to Netherlands, Ireland, Portugal... and to all the artists who were mishandled by them. 3) Publicly apologise to Joost Klein and invite him to open next year's contest with Europapa song. 4) Drop Moroccanoil as general sponsor and clearly state that EBU will not let the sponsors dictate their actions in the future. And as for the sponsor - they should never again have one general sponsor but many smaller ones, that's the only way to prevent one corporation (*and the government of their country*) from imposing their agenda and blackmailing. It's actualy a completely preposterous idea for an international competition to sign a multi-year contract with a general sponsor from one of the participating countries (especially one known for unstable and unsafe internal situation, and a strong govermnent meddling in all aspects of life). Im a weird limbo of disgusted by the ebu but also so enamored by the effort put in by the artists- Seeing Estonia live right by the barrier while standing legit healed me- But other stuff during sf2 were definitely well.. There was booing, there was screaming, arguable I only heard the commotion as I was at the very front of the crowd, but as I read in the news shit went down behind me, but man was it uh.. wild..? There was definitely an air of nervousness during that day compared to sf1 and although its not super related- I will never forget walking out of the arena after sf2 alone and trying to meet my mom who was shopping in the emporia mall while I was inside- And hearing the mall evacuation alarm before I could even approach the building. I hate that my mind immediately jumped to the worst possiible case scenario that I might never see her again. I went to Eurovision this year, and it was my third competition. It is telling that my experience was very similar to yours. I was at Euroclub on Tuesday night and there was a sense of unease. The fans from a certain country were in Bambies face standing with their flags in a confrontational way. Irish fans could not get to them. That was my first and last time going to Euroclub. As the week went on, the sense of unease grew from the Thursday, security everywhere. I was relieved to leave Malmo and stay in Copenhagen. This year I actually don't have PED. I'm also thinking I will give it a skip next year unless there is a huge change within the EBU. After the event I've heard so many stories of fans getting abuse, as Ireland is known as a pro 🍉 country. I didn't feel comfortable wearing Eurovision merch or my countries colours. The Irish media has also been full of hate. So much homophobic comments aimed at fans at the contest, and transphobic/religious slurs aimed at Bambie. Eurovision is supposed to be fun, where you mingle with other fans from different countries. It wasn't that this year unfortunately. Not forgetting Joost Klein, people not being able to bring in a non binary flag, etc. I'm actually emotionally exhausted. Thank you so much for enlightening us on every detail about the incidents because, where I come from, Greece, we only got a fraction of the story and the TV channels kept blaming Marina Satti for "yawning" during the press conference and they never mentioned the harrassment she went through all week long. On the contrary, we were told that she verbally abused an Israeli - that's what he said and the Greek media gave credit to him and not to our singer - allegedly without being provoked and the Israeli said he was just filming around but didn't target her. It was a lie, obviously. Harrassment continues in Marina Satti's Instagram account from Israeli - real people or bots - and they also harrass fans, I'm one of them. Those people are ridiculous.

Happy for Nemo's victory and Baby Lasagna's televote victory (especially as a nonbinary viewer!), but the EBU's actions before, during, and after Eurovision this year have been nothing short of shameful. KAN had also filmed Kärijä with Eden Golan as they were seen dancing together and they had posted it without his permission since he didn't know he was being filmed and took 8 hrs for them to respond and remove the video, I believe this also contributed to him withdrawing as the Finnish representative, but I hate that KAN is saying they were being harassed when they harassed and filmed representatives and delegations without consent which is illegal in Sweden and SVT should've sent a statement and I do believe Netherlands should be automatic qualifier as an apology since they discredited Joost for false accusations and KAN commentator laughing that he was disqualified, I believe Israel was able to stay since Moroccanoil (An Israeli company) sponsors the contest. Hope Switzerland 2025 will be better, but I believe it will be different if they want Nemo to perform.

This year was chaotic, the Israel situation during Eurovision, Joost being disqualified, toxicity and it goes on… Like why was Joost even disqualified, just because he didn’t want to be filmed? What did he even do, he was accused of some sort of assault to someone but was it true? Edit: I don’t think it was, the case has been dropped, I just hope he could return in 2025 or in a few years time.

That's where there must not be a general sponsor ever again - it was a MASSIVE blunder to sign with a company from a country known for unstable internal situation and a government that meddles in all spheres of life and uses every single mean to further their politics. An absolutely incredibly idiotic thing to do. As Gabe says - the moment about lyrics where EBU requested a change of lyrics to eliminate the political context (which is a ridiculously meek request) was a cue for ¡sr@el to refuse and withdraw gracefully and save themselves and EBU from further problems. But something like that would've never happened because ¡srael is at ESC exactly for that motive - to abuse it for political propaganda, and no way they'd give up on that, especially now with all what's going on, and that they can blackmail them via the general sponsor.

For me, ESC died that year. It was difficult when they threw russia out and... well... gave the win to Ukraine. Before that year political neutrality was always important and a reason I like the ESC very much. It just shows, that every musician is the same worldwide, they want to make good music. But when it started to get political... it got difficult. Israel got special rights, even on the TV it was not hard to hear othes boo over them. Still, we noticed with the missing number something was stupid. When we searched for it, the statement regarding the disqualification just seem stupid to me by then as well. But nothing will happen Some people will lose their jobs, sure, but the political guidelines will stay active as long as the war does not conclude by next year. So... I just quit. Another piece of peace movement destroyed for the sake of war propaganda.

as an autistic person who’s biggest special interest for a lot of the year is eurovision, the 10th and 11th felt really stressful for me, for many autistic people our special interests are such important parts of our lives, they become part of our identity, autistic people are what they love. eurovision means so much to me. i was absolutely terrified at the prospect of an israeli win, both as someone who has been heavily invested in the fight for palestinian freedom and because to me an israeli win would spell the death of the contest for me for the foreseeable future, not just because i couldnt even conceive how it could continue as is but because i could not in good conscious continue to support what feels like rolling out a red carpet and massive platform for a genocidal regime to blast its tone deaf blatant propaganda to the rest of the world. i struggle with anxiety issues and the level of panic and dread i felt for hours watching the grand final right up till israel got its votes was absolutely crushing. i could barely drink from a cup i was shaking so much. when i heard israels points and realised they didn’t have enough to win i literally leapt out my seat screaming ‘YESS!!!’. at this point im still questioning whether to continue supporting the contest, if they make the necessary changes then probably, otherwise I don’t know if I can, not just ethically but because despite the love I have of eurovision being like the force of a thousand suns, I can’t deal with another eurovision like this. I felt such an unhealthy level of anger, dread, anxiety, frustration and disappointment leading up to the final and no silly gay song competition is worth that no matter how beloved. i feel so much anger and frustration towards the west’s handling of israel with kiddy gloves and the EBU allowing their delegation to harass and abuse people while so rapidly and harshly disqualifying Joost, I just felt so livid. Eurovision this year really felt like a microcosm of what feels like a growing schism between the west and israel, and the EBU had to feel the anger Europeans feel about our governments and organisations continuously not giving a fuck and letting israel do whatever it wants

As an aside, I ask myself why a unique experience that many of the artists have been working towards for years or decades (worst case for Joost Klein!) is being so massively destroyed ?! Each of them knows that all of their performances have been impaired, manipulated or even completely wiped out by this poisoned atmosphere and that the result is no longer genuine. It is also not a pleasant experience for the winner to know that their own victory came about _in this way_ instead of the possibility of an honest competition. Thanks for telling us, Gabe. I'm sorry you and all of you had to go through that. Originally ESC was never supposed to be like that, you guys would've deserved a wonderful time.

Is there any possible to look into the EBU rules to find out if the Israeli delegation did something wrong.. it’s so weird that it’s said they didn’t but Joost did and Nemo had to hide the flag (basically breaking rules, but nothing happened .. could be because it already was the final but to Joost that’s kinda mean, no hate to Nemo, just to EBU!) and that was wrong (while they did use that online, after they had won)…. I want to see the rules.

Thank you Gabe. This could have so easily been avoided. The Belarus exclusion in 2021 happened after two songs were rejected for overtly political lyrics. Exactly the same happened with Israel but the EBU shamelessly bowed to government intervention, How much is that to do with the Israeli sponsors, Moroccan Oil? I have watched Eurovision since 1969, yes I'm old, but this was incredibly stressful. The trophy was broken, Eurovision was broken. The EBU needs a re-think. @@mo4848Both lyrics were political, while the official eSC policy is not to allow politics at the contest. Both should've been excluded on the same grounds, which would've happen had EBU not been in the chokehold of a general sponsor from Isreal. It's not hard to be honest to admit to the inconsistency due to a horrible cobflict of interests EBU had been stupid enough to walk into when they signed with Moroccanoil and lost all possibility of integrity. The obvious thing is that you're not willing to be honest, but that's an option too, I guess.

That's a total mis-understanding of the rules. The rules say that an approved act has to be submitted before a certain deadline (as I remember March 20th). There is no limit to the amount of entries submitted before that. There is frequently a pre-submission stage in which a Broadcaster queries if a certain entry will get approved if submitted officially, this procedure is more relevant to other countries as any entry to San-Remo or Melodiefestivalen needs to be valid by the EBU rules because they don't want a situation it wins but can't be performed in the ESC. Israel itself also submitted multiple entries in it's selection process before 2010.

This was the first Eurovision I attended in person after years of dreaming about it from living on the other side of the world, and honestly I feel so sad. While I think it was absolutely the right thing to do, I never thought the EBU would actually ban Israel. They are a collective of public broadcasters responsible to the interests of their governments, who rely on Israel as a foothold in the Middle East. So I thought maybe by coming, now that the opportunity finally arose, we could at least celebrate the core values of the contest and in doing so, project a glimmer of light in times of growing darkness, so to speak. Maybe this was naive to begin with. This was one of the best travel experiences of my life, and that came down to the amazing community around this contest, artists and fans alike. Yet this whole thing was cast over a backdrop of hypocrisy and quasi-authoritarian decisions from the EBU that I think made a complete mockery of the contest’s spirit, and looking back now that I’ve had time to process all the shitfuckery that went on that week, I can’t help but feel…dirty, for having given my money to help orchestrate this whole thing, and for celebrating and documenting it all for my friends to see on social media, pretending to champion peace and unity. It feels like I’ve made just as much as much a hypocrite of myself for partaking, and whenever I think about it I just get disgusted and angry. It brings me immense pain to say this, as someone who has loved this contest obsessively since I was a child; but if we don’t see immense changes over the next 12 months-which frankly, in the current climate, I don’t think are a given-I don’t know if I can continue supporting this next year. And that really, really sucks.

Hey Gabe, thanks for the video! When it comes to the israeli participation in the future, I think that many people make it too easy. I'm from Germany and I noticed that some politicans like Claudia Roth (Green Party), who is the states-employee of the federal gouvernment for culture and media (and also a Eurovision-enthusiast), called the calls for the exclusion for Israel in 2024 as a "scandal". And if you ask me, this is also the standing of the german public boardcasting consult ARD. I see a scenario where they solidarize with Israel and withdraw from the contest, if Israel is excluded. I already read a comment by a german newspaper where the booing towards the israeli performances were adressed and that NDR (or whichever boardcaster is in place next year for Germany) should see this behaviour as the perfect opportunity to withdraw from the contest, because Eurovision showed the world it's antisemitic side that can't be tolerated by a public boardcaster of Germany. (Sidenote: Most of the newspapers in Germany don't like or even hate Eurovision anyways and in this year, they had no opportunity to demand a withdrawal because of a bad placing, but as you see, they found something else.) And it would be a big risk for the EBU, if a Big 5-member would withdraw. I'm excited to see how the EBU will try to mend things in the next months.
