My 16 footer had a furnace in it when I bought it. On the way home with it we spent the night at a remote campground it was cold so needed to use the furnace. We woke up in the middle of the night freezing our butts off. The furnace used so much electricity it wore down our battery and quit working. If you have an external power source it's fine. But if you boon dock it'll draw down your battery in one night or less. And, I suspect although I'm not sure, that if you leave your Scamp connected to your vehicle, it's also draw down your car battery. Scamps are great in many ways. I've had mine since 2007 and have had zero issues with it. However, they are not particularly good 4-season campers. Which is why I have disconnected my Suburban factory installed heater and instead use a Dickinson Newport propane heater that I installed myself as the principle heat source. And as a backup use a Buddy Heater. The Dickinson uses very little electricity and little propane. It's very efficient. The Buddy Heater throws a lot of heat but a downside is it emits water vapor as a part of it's combustion process, So I run it only to heat up my Scamp quickly. A Secondary benefit of the Dickinson it that it has a glass door that allows the flames to be seen. It looks like a miniature fireplace and adds a bit of warm ambiance.

You are not the 1st person to tell me about an experience like that. The group 27 battery upgrade helps a ton in making it through the night with the heat on. But 2 things that make the most for us: - Line the floor windows and vents with reflectix. The insulation really traps in heat and helps the heater to run less often to keep the space warm. We use gym floor mat foam over the reflectix on the floor for added insulation and a comfortable floor to walk on. - We also carry warm bedding even in the summer so we can set the heat lower and let it run more intermittently instead of staying on all night.

Just subscribed, and thanks for this video. We have a refurbished 13 foot 1977 Trillium with a similar setup, and we do mostly dry camping. The shop that did the work for us provided quite a few options. Ones we paid for that we wouldn't do again: outdoor shower, propane water heater. Options that we love: propane furnace, single propane tank, front dinette instead of bunks or toilet, larger than standard front and rear windows, glass covered stove, solar system with roof-mounted solar panel, 12 volt fridge/freezer. We chose a trailer cover, and then didn't use it for a few years. This winter we finally opened the package and put it on, and we're loving it.

Great review. The discussion about the outdoor shower was surprisingly very informative...onboard water, energy to heat, etc. all dissuade use of the outdoor shower. This is something I am considering as I compare the Scamp to other fiberglass trailers.

I have a 2021 13’ and agree with everything you talked about. I wish I had the electric jack and door handle but they weren’t offered at that time. I live in AZ and use the cover often. It’s lasted (as they said) 3 years and is now slowly falling apart due to the sun I’m sure. I use my awning often and am glad I have it in our hot temperatures. I would hope that the brake lights would incorporate backup lights which are now available with a 7 pin connector, that would make the backup camera work much better in the dark.

@JDye-youtube that would make a huge difference. I've just been using my lanterns and headlamps to help guide me in at night. I place them where I want my trailer bumper to end up and they give me great reference points in the dark that show up well on the camera display. This video is super helpful. I've done a lot of research on campers. I have to say I would agree with your wife, I definitely want a bathroom. That's why the 13' Scamp is on the top of my list. So far it's the only camper light enough for our vehicle to tow that has a bathroom option. I could do without a kitchen before I would do without having a private toilet.

Totally understandable. For a lot of people the bathroom is non-negotiable. I just find the space in the 13 really tight for 2 with the bathroom taking up the whole front end. We have to get dressed one at a time while the other person waits on the bed. We are constantly leaning over one another to get to things and just generally feel like we can't get out of each other's way. That's why I would love to have the couch up front instead. It would give us that added room to move around inside the trailer when we are both inside there together with a large dog. I think that is why a lot of owners sell 13s and upgrade to 16s. You get more space without sacrificing the bathroom. Good thing there are SO many options to choose from eh? Thanks for watching and commenting! The nice thing about the built in awning is that you don’t have to lug around a heavy, awkward, space using mobile awning. Some folks don’t need overhead shade, but living in the sunny southwest, we have to have it You will appreciate the second propane tank the moment your first tank empties out while you are camping. You can put just a few gallons of propane in your second tank as a reserve, that should help reduce your tongue weight without the risk of having zero propane. The digital entry lock WILL FAIL so have your key handy. The built in brake controller is new to me, sounds intriguing. I like your exterior 30 amp plug, our cord is hard wired and occasionally catches on the inside when pulled out. Big yes to USB fans, they add so much value for comfort. Our Casita has the bathroom, I kind of agree, I’m not so sure I would get it again either. I think I’d get a Tralino toilet and be good with that.

Yeah I know it's an unpopular opinion but I prefer the easy up over the awning. I had an awning ripped off my rig by a sudden gust of wind once. It did a ton of damage to the fiberglass and was very costly. So now I find myself wanting to pull the awning in every time I walk the dog. An easy up staked down next to the scamp is much less likely to damage the trailer if the wind surprises me again. Thanks for the heads up on the digital lock. I always have my keys on me. It's nice that my wife can get in when I'm off at the bathroom or digging stuff out of the truck. We like the added flexibility. I'd fully do a cassette toilet too if I could go back in time but I still love my Scamp and enjoy the heck out of it. Have fun out there my friend!

I’m redoing a 1992 13’ foot layout with NO BATHROOM… I agree with your wife, a bathroom is nice. But we use the front bunk exactly as you would. The bed just isn’t big enough. We enjoy our awning but like you, we love our furnace. We have a portable step. One campsite has such an angle, you caught yourself and almost fell because we parked on the level and all else was sloping. The portable step is nice to wipe off shoes, etc. it's just a tad lower than door but love it in the rain because you stomp off rocks, etc on hiking boots. Enjoyed your video!

Wow! Sending you a big hug. Thank you for such an informative review. These problems are really a failure on Scamp. I don't understand how a company that has been making these things for so long have these problems. Actually your lucky I have seen these with the plumbing (waterline leak) on an older one. It was such a difficult fix and it was an install issue with a $1 part but it was very difficult to access it to fix... and then the scamp got mold. I have been thinking about buying the new dry scamp they came out with (no water no toilet). But you really shouldn't have had the little problems you did have with this one. I'm just reluctant to buy. But I still want one. Thanks again

TY and you're welcome. As far as issues go, my Scamp has had the least of all my various RVs over the years. I do feel pretty lucky. I have heard HORROR stories of how much has gone wrong for other Scamp owners. I wonder how much is user error though. I know when I was new to RVs I thought a lot stuff was "going wrong." But experience taught me that many of those issues could have been avoided with better understanding of how RV systems function. Those Scamp Lites do look really cool! If they had been available when I was on the market I probably would have gone that route. I use mine dry so often it would have been a great option for me. Thanks for the comment! We bought one used. The one thing I really wish I had is the propane heater. We're are also often off grid. We tend to only camp with hookups in the winter because we don't have this heater. We don't have a bathroom and have never missed it. Never having to dump/clean a black water tank is a definite yes for us.

Very nice and honest review! I've read in other post's that the fan of the heater draws the battery down while boon docking. What's you opinion? I feel that one of the benefits of a fiberglass camper is that it withstands the conditions and should not require the cover. Thanks for your ideas and opinions!

Thanks so much. I would agree that the heater can drain the battery. You are more likely to get through the night with the group 27 battery upgrade than without it. We tend to keep it set at 60 so it'll cycle on and off instead of running constantly. OR when it's really cold we shut off the fridge at night to reserve more battery power for the heat, but we have an electric only fridge in our 2023. Both are big reasons for installing a permanently mounted solar system. We can use the heat all night while running the fridge and recharge the battery back up during the day.

I'm still paranoid about out of propane. But if I was not, I would just take one tank out if I was concerned about tongue weight. Yeah, manual awnings are a pain. Grab handle. Hard yes! Take it from an old person with arthritis. Absolutely yes! Outdoor shower and dogs. Depends on the dog. We strted camping with a spaniel mix. That dog was a long haired mud magnet. An outdoor shower was great. We ended with a poodle mix. Never needed anything but a hand towel to wipe his feet. Back up camera. I like mine. It really helps. Brakes and lights. Yes! Safety is best.

Yeah our Golden doodle is pretty wipe-offable 😁 If I take a tank off I need to remove and replace the mounting bracket so I could center the remaining tank instead of having it off to one side messing up the weight balance. Considering revamping the tongue with a storage box and upgraded battery system... stay tuned 🤞

I can't say what that weight would be since there are too many factors and materials that have changed over the years. If you want to have a new one built to your own specifications the people over at Scamp are wonderful and would be able to help you with that information. What I can tell you is that experts suggest that the weight of the fully loaded trailer be no more than 85% of the tow capacity to allow a reasonable payload in the tow vehicle. Hope that helps!

Great video! I travel solo with an occasional dog or 2. Husband not interested in camping. I love my bathroom and wouldn't go without that in my 13'. I agree with all your other preferences. Recently did a long trip and bought the hitch wheel to get me out of a tight situation. Didn't need it but I won't travel without it because I once spent the good part of an hour turning around at a closed gate! I am almost always off grid so my AC has only been used once. Furnace is definitely my friend. I camp in the desert southwest often and it gets very cold even on spring and fall nights. I may buy an additional 16' layout 6 at some point. I enjoy leaving my bed made up but miss a place to sit for eating and laptop conveniences. The stove and sink top options you have are on my wish list! I use a cutting board over my sink now that must be stored while on the road. I've never used more than one burner on the stove so having a cover that is flush with counter top is a big win for better use of that space.

My wife feels the same way about the bathroom. When I use the trailer solo I love having it. But when 2 of us are in there together we have to dance around each other and do things one at a time while the other waits their turn. It would be nice to have a couch to sit on out of the way from our clothing storage while one of us is changing or cooking. Oh my goodness though, getting stuck at a closed gate is my nightmare! I'm impressed it took you less than an hour to maneuver out. We have talked about getting a 16' as well. That would require a bigger tow vehicle for us though. We really do love our 13' and have almost no complaints. I just wanted to point out the pros and cons for people bc I would have found that super helpful when I was shopping for our Scamp.

Have you looked at the Casita fiberglass campers? they have very similar layouts to the Scamps and are very similar in price too. We have a Casita Spirit Deluxe model with full bed, side dinette that becomes single bed, and bathroom. You can choose a 16 or 17 ft model.

Also, 👍👍 on AC t fan. Olive in southeast..so AC is a must! If I had my druthers, in a 16, i'd have that side table, little couch and f I could fit a bathroom, I'd had them rig a shower for it to go to gray tank only ( so in national parks I have a shower and forgo our pain to deal with water from shower set-up) and a compost toilet. We typically use park restrooms but in pickle, we'd have something. In our 13'... Bunk beds our daughter didn't like top one and slept no couch. When it's just the two of us, we use the couch a lot. Pretty comfy. I think I'd like the sixteen with the bath I described but absolutely love my 13. My tow vehicle might stress on larger.

I bought a 2018 5 years ago. Same scenario as yours, customer never picked it up. It was a layout 1-no bathroom but a bunk. It was discounted because of this. I’m pleased with it but wish I had the wheel on the tow bar! Great video.🤙

Kickass review. It was very genuine and I liked that you gave the input from your wife's perspective as well. I like the bathroom, but like the bunk possibility more. I like the 16' model that has both the bunk and bathroom. I wish the 13' models could figure out a good floor plan for that option.

They definitely aren't for everyone and you can save a ton of money by not getting all the optional features. I've had drivables before and I really prefer this trailer. I've come across people still using their Scamps built in the 70s! Not May motors you can say the same for 😉

(Previous comment didn’t post. My error I’m sure.) I have a 2021 13’ with a bath, brakes and controller and several other items you mentioned. I agree with most of your takes on what is worth it and what is not. Several of the options you and I paid extra for are now standard on the 13’. Brakes, 27 battery, plug in electric, glass top stove - for example. One odd change is that it appears you can only get the larger bed in the deluxe. I didn’t want the extra weight of the wood, but the larger bed was a must. Glad I don’t have to make that decision now. I’ll subscribe and see what else you suggest for Scamp.

The 3-way fridge is great. That fridge was standard in mine. Other than the AC (that I also don’t use much), everything on mine will run on battery or propane. It seems many trailers are moving to all electric assuming people will always have power. I think that’s too bad.

That's how all my previous rigs were set up too. It was way easier to stay off grid longer that way. I'm not a big fan of the change over to all electric either. It's tough to have enough solar mounted on such a small trailer and suitcase solar isn't my favorite option. But there's always a way to make it work.

Great video, you earned another subscriber. We have a Casita so very similar FGRV and I have to agree on most of these items, the juice just isn't worth the squeeze on some of them. I too am surprised at how little propane they use, I figured it would burn more with the furnace, stove, water heater and fridge (both when in gas mode) all using propane but they sip it and the dual tanks is pretty overkill. It blows my mind when I see some trailers with the twin 30# tanks but different strokes.... We love the outdoor shower and we've found that we use it more as an outdoor sink with the use of a QD flexible neck faucet hookup than we do with the coiled hose and garden sprayer it came with. I have used it with the outdoor shower tent a time or too after dirt bike trips but it's rare as I make good use of onsite shower facilities to avoid having to dirty up mine haha. The toilet in our camper is for number one only or number two only in extreme circumstances when there's no other option. Regardless of manufacturer, fiber glass is the way to go when it comes to these smaller trailers. We've been customizing ours all year and so far it has been fantastic. We have some big trips coming up this fall and we are looking forward to using it on those travels.

I will say I have started to use our outdoor shower as a dish washing station and I may have spoken to soon on that one. I had not thought about tweaking it tho. Thanks for that inspo. Thanks so much. I can't speak on the Scamp Lites but in my 13 the camera is wired into the trailer's 12v battery system and the monitor has to be plugged into the tow vehicle's 12v outlet to get power. Hope this helps. Enjoy your new trailer and I hope you have many amazing adventures with it!

I do think the furnace is totally worth it. We use it often and without hookups it is the most energy efficient/safest option. I think that with the shower, toilet, sink and outdoor shower that the electric pump makes the most sense for us.

The option for a warm shower when desired is a total luxury and getting greasy camp dishes really clean is lovely too. However, both of those can be accomplished in other ways. When we camp without hookups we don't use the water heater so it's really just when we spoil ourselves with a full hookup site.

Re outdoor shower, try heating water on a campfire & filling a "solar shower" bag so you can use the nozzle that comes woth that + gravity drain to = off-grid warm shower (indoor or out).

@@BackcountryDirtbagActually I saw engineer come up with great option He purchased 2 gal garden manual pump spray bottle with hose and long handle and modified it. He cut the handle short and pours warmed up water in container, then uses it as shower with handle. He even made inside small shower pan. We so far bought 1 gallon one at Lowes with sprayed top super cheap to rinse our feet, dog and shoes. We have indoor shower in longer trailer but prefer manual sprayer during warmer weather.

Love the review. I’m guessing that since the power jack and plug protector aren’t products you have listed on amazon where I can purchase them but only what the mfg supplies? I’m also guessing the power jack needs to have a specific type of trailer in order to work correctly. Lots of great info. I have the bathroom and am trying to think of ways to take everything out but cover the toilet and incorporate a couch. I wonder if anyone has ever done that type of renovation. Thanks!

Yeah everything discussed are factory installed options. Everything linked are just extra things seen in the video that I tend to get asked about a lot. You can find the 7 way protector mount on Amazon here: amzn.to/3SUBiCY It should be pretty easy to install. The electric jack on the other hand... I can't provide too much guidance on that one. I'm no expert on those. But if you contact Scamp directly they can tell you all about them and if it's possible to add one to your trailer after the fact. That's an interesting idea about converting the bathroom but leaving the toilet. I would love to know if you pull that off. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Great question. I would not personally. I don't want the extra weight. I prefer to pack lots of toys like paddle boards, mountain bikes, kayaks, and surfboards. So for me the extra weight of the deluxe minimizes what I can pack to avoid maxing out my tow vehicle's towing capacity.

Hi, you are so very welcome. I'm glad you found some value in it. The 7 way plug is hardwired to the trailer no matter which version you get. The portion demonstrated in this video is what plugs into the tow vehicle. The option I discussed was just a spot to store/protect the 7 way when the trailer is not connected to a tow vehicle. There isn't a way to detch it from my trailer. I can't speak to a lithium battery upgrade. That's something I may do in the future but I haven't yet.

Oh my gosh I'm so sorry you had to evacuate! I grew up in California and know how scary that can be. The 13 is smaller than it looks on camera. We fit 2 adults and a large dog in there but there isn't any room to spare. Some days we dream of the 16 ft version but having something so easy to store and so lightweight is a good trade off for the lack of space. I would suggest looking at a 13 and a 16 in person before you buy to see which size feels right for you.

The 2023 and newer Scamp 13s have electricity only fridges in them. The factory employee mentioned that the manufacturer stopped making 3-way refrigerators in that size. I do wish it was a 3-way. The fridge is my biggest battery draining vampire by far. It is the main reason I installed the solar panel a few videos prior. With the solar the battery can keep up with the fridge drain. Without it the battery only runs the fridge for 2-3 days max. Thanks for the great questions!

Could you expand a little (brand, model) on the key fob controlled wireless electronic brake controller. I am not finding it among all the online options. Is it the Curt Echo? We got a brake controller installed in our tow vehicle. Why would you want the control for the brakes attached to your keys? Very bad idea for a number of reasons.

So,I agree with your wife re a wet-bath inside, yet .... a kit is enough for me. When seitting up, open up your rectangular shallow Tupperware (or inflatable/folding dog bath), assemble your folding toilet w/bio-bags, hang shower curtain to enclose toilet & shower-water collection container (whether beside each other or toilet inside water collector between showers), , and suspend your gravity-feed "solar shower" bag with nozzle (use cook stove to heat water to desired temp for showering or washing dishes for filling solar shower).

It can feel like that for sure. Yet when I factor in that there are still Scamps on the road and in use out there that were built in the mid 70s, I think the investment is worth it. The price spread out over 50 years of amazing memories seems more than worth it to me. Plus they retain their value so well you could use it for a few years and get the majority of your money back when you sell it. Few other RVs can do that.

I can see why you'd think that from this video alone. But in my 1st Scamp video I discuss how I have 2 Chock and Locks that are part of a multi-teared security system that involves those locks on both wheels, locking lug nuts on both tires and the spare to make tire removal way more trouble, a coupler lock and a proven industries hitch lock that even secures the safety chains within it. I'm not going to claim that it makes it impossible to take the trailer for a very determined thief but it definitely makes it less appealing than the trailer down the street with only a subpar coupler lock to protect it. The time it would take to tackle so many security systems gives me more than enough time to load and aim my most powerful deterrent. I think the fact that my trailer hasn't been messed with in Portland is a pretty good testimonial that it's working well.

@@pammied52 If a trailer isn't secured anyone with a tow ball can connect up to it and drive away. There are very high theft rates of vehicles and trailers where I live so I try not to make myself an easy target. The pop up canopy I mentioned is discussed with pictures in an article I wrote about all my favorite camping gear.
